I could get one of those stands for the rear tire(i don't know the name). But if I do get the stand is it the same thing as a spin bike? That way I can ride it outside when I want. If it is the same with the stand, how much is the stand?

Answer
I, and most cyclist here will say a bike on a TRAINER is the best. Trainers are fairly cheap many $100 to $150. But the bike of your choice. I recommend buying a cheap smooth tire for the back wheel, it works much better that way and won't wear out your knobbie tire.

Here's on of many sites you can get them from, and it being end of winter they are on sale: http://www.nashbar.com/index.cfm

Fluid and mag trainers are preferred. You can buy a reasonalble bike and trainer for the same cost as a good spinning bike and get much more use out it like you said.

I am planning on competing in a sprint triathlon in September, what is the best way to train?

I am in decent shape, but I want to get in really good shape. The triathlon is September 28 and it is 1/4mile swim, 14 mile bike and 3.1 mile run. Does anyone know a good training program or a really good way to prepare myself for this?

Answer
Gym's are good for building "core-fitness", as in muscle strength (if done properly) and you can run on the treadmill and swim in a pool, etc, but nothing beats training as close to what you will actually do in a Tri. I have no idea how fit you are., and therefore depending on your fitness take it as slow or quick as you feel comfortable at - If you are relatively fit, I would recommend training for at leat 3 months before entering any event, and only if you are ready, enter a sprint (400m swim, 20k bike, 5k run) - don't do anything like an Olympic distance as your first Tri unless your are very fit to begin with. If you are just starting a fitness regime, and are not particularly fit, give it a few months more. But if you put the work in, you well get the results out - Triathlons highlight this more than anything I have done before.

If you are not a good swimmer, of have not been coached in any way recently to swim front crawl properly, you will need some help in that. The swim, though the shortest part of the Tri, is the most technical part, and its also the part most people think is impossible at first. Spending time on a few swim lessons (not how to swim, you understand, but how to swim better, smoother, effortlessly if possible) will pay enormous results. Once learning the technigue, nothing beats regular swim sessions, properly mapped out with drills and technique sessions. All thi type of info is esay to pick up on the web (www.tri247.com, www220triathlon.com and other websites) I would recommend finding a local team/cub to join as well because you should find they have some sort of coached sessions as well. Get the right kit as well - some cycle short type swim pants, good googles and perhaps a pull bouy for strength sessions (www.swim4fitness.com is a good site for Tri training plans, etc).

The Bike - general fitnes will help with this, as will the right bike (road vs mountain bike), but don't worry if you have a mountain bike. Just get out on the roads and once again look around/ask for advice on training plans, etc. Again, nothing works more like training as you would race, so do as much as you can on the bike rather than on a stationary gym bike. Some people swear by Spinning Bikes sessions for upping their fitness, some other use Turbo Trainers - these are both good in suplimenting your training if the weather is bad, etc.

The Run - this comes at the end of the race, so don't underestimate this thinking you can run ok - you will be tired, depending on how much you put in on the swim/bike. Invest in a good pair of runners, and do the 3 types of run training - Interval, Distance and Tempo. Interval training is a great way to increase fitness - this means though a 30 or 45 or 1 hour session, do some effort sessions - so for a 1 hour session, perhaps do a 10-15m warmup - gentle run, then do some speed sessions, or up hill sessions - no longer than 1 k per interval at most (start of running up a shortish hill quickly, then jogging back down, repeat 5 times, run quick (not sprint just quicker than normal for 2 mins and then jog/walk for 1, etc), and then do a 10-15m warm down.
Tempo - simply run at the same pace for a set time (best done on a track) or distance, and then slowly over the next sessions to run futher for the same time, of faster for the same distance, etc.
Distance - run a normal pace for increaseing distances over a period of weeks, even months - remember, if you are doing sprint or olympic tris (what ever you aim) you only need to be able to run well for those distances (5k or 10k) so don't think you have to run for 26miles just to get fit - run the race distances as well and often as you can using the 3 methods as above.

Kit - don't worry about this at first - as long as you have a hood pair of runners, some proper swim kit (not baggy board shorts and a snorkel mask :0), and a bike, just get on with it, enjoy it, ask people who do it, get involved online, skim the forums, as questions (don't be afraid, if anyone gives you any beef, they are fakes anyway, or have too big ego's). Tri people can and do get obsessed with kit (heart rate monitors, carbon frame bikes, etc) but don't spend heavily on anything until you feel that you can hack the training (3-4 times a week doing at least 1 session per discipline - concentrate on your weakest event (for me the swim) for 2 sessions out of the 4, and then build up if and when you can.

Last of all enjoy it - it has changed the way I feel about and do excercise enourmously, where as before I would join a gym, initially get into it, and then get bored - tri training gives great results if done well and often, and you have the actual Tri events as goals as well for motivation.

I think thats enough for now.....

How do I know if I need my wheels trued?

Alex F

On a road bike. I have 2 triathlons coming up in the next two months and I don't want any breakdowns during my races. Also, how much does having the wheels trued usually cost?

Answer
Spin each wheel by hand when the bike is off the ground. Look at the rim where it passes the brake pads. A wheel that needs trued will look like it is moving from side to side as it spins. Make sure you are looking at the rim not the tire. Often tires have imperfections that make them untrue.

If it moves a tiny bit, I wouldn't bother. If it is very noticeable have it trued.

The shops I deal with charge $10 -- seems to be the going rate. When I carry them in unannounced, they can have them done while I wait. Expect them to dismount the tire while truing the wheel.

Q. Hello, I have always loved biking, and recently I have decided to try to step up my hobby, and begin trying to cycle more often. I am not trying to be a top competitor, just consistently getting better, and more capable.

I am trying to start a routine for working out and biking, are there any guidelines I should follow to get the most of my training?

Answer
Start out with an easy 10 min warm up. After the warm up start pedaling at 70-90 rpm's in a gear that is easy to spin. You want to ride at a pace that you can do for a long time. That will build up your cardiovascular system and give you a good base to train from. Work your way up to a hour a day for best results. It's very easy to keep shifting gears and wanting to go fast but you wont last long. If you need to catch your breath or your legs start to hurt drop down a gear or two and keep going. You want to ride at a pace where you can still talk but not sing. A heart rate monitor is a great training tool. After a few weeks start climbing hills and do some intervals where you sprint for 30-90 seconds and then drop back to recover. Once you recover do it again.

How to change the gears on my bike to make it hard to petal?

cuddly bea

I want to train my heart and quads by putting my bike on the highest gears, there is 1,2,3 on one side and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 on the other. What numbers should i change to make it the hardest gear

Answer
Easier gears spinning the pedals fast trains your heart and lungs. Hard gears build muscle, but beware, pushing hard on the pedals can also ruin your knees. Cycling is not about pushing hard on the pedals, watch elite cyclists riding their bikes, they spin the pedals at 80-100 rpm. Shifting gears isn't about numbers, it is about maintaining your pedaling cadence up and down hill. Practice using them

What is the difference between a spinner bike and an exercise bike?

best spin bike for training image

Teresa

I have been researching the spinner bike and it burns tons of calories. The bikes looks just like a regular exercise bike. Have anyone experience riding the spinner bike, is there a difference?

Answer
Hi Teresa! I'm familiar with spinner bikes. Normal users don't seem to care for them. The reason is motivation. A spinner bike is used best at a spinning class (say at the YMCA/YWCA where the teacher/class provide motivation) or purchased by "road warrior" cycling enthusiasts who are highly self motivated to supplement outdoor training when they can't "hit the road". In any event, without cycling or spinning training, a spinner bike should not be considered. With a spinner bike there's shifting involved and normally no programs or electronics to guide the user through a workout. In otherwords, it isn't the spinner bike that burns more calories, but the motivation to push oneself. Also, the average person can't handle the strenuous spinner bike workouts, so paying substantially more for a spinner bike, rather than a normal exercise bike (recumbent or upright) would be a waste of money. In the end, spinning without proper training could actually have a negative impact on a person's outlook, causing them to loose interest in exercising altogether...

You'll get a great cardio workout with either a recumbent or upright exercise bike. Quality exercise bikes will run $500 - $2,000 or more. Stay away from the low end bikes and look for one with a good warranty of 10 years or more. I'd suggest Endurance exercise bikes because they have Lifetime warranties. I hope that helps... Happy exercise bike hunting!

How do cyclists train in the winter?

Marcy

I'm on a road bike and considering starting training indoors? Any tips - I hate riding in the winter but want to stay in riding shape.

Answer
What most road cyclists do is take spinning classes in winter with one or two a week that are endurance spinning classes(two or three hour spinning classes). We also ride in weather that is 40 degrees & dry in Winter. You may have to wear tights or warmers, shoe covers, bacakva and a warm jacket but will do fine. Riding/Training in winter is do-able but stay dry.

I was initially looking for an upright exercise bike, but then I noticed the indoor cycles (use for spinning). Now I am not sure what to get. I need something that's quite, use it for cardio training and develop leg strength. Any bike model suggestions will be more than welcome.

Thanks!!!

Answer
Check the local ebay, craig's list, paper, Salvation Army, or Goodwill for a used one. People buy exercise equipment all the time and only use it a few weeks. A real bike is a lot more fun and you will do it for hours instead of 15-20 min. When the weather is bad put it on a trainer.

I'm looking to purchase an indoor spin bike. Unfortunately, I know nothing about what brands or features to investigate! I am 5'0 so I'm also concerned with buying something that will adjust well to my size. Any advice would be great! =)

Answer
Some bicycle and sporting goods stores sell stationary (indoor) bicycles. You can also buy them online. Shop around carefully because there are important differences between a LeMond RevMaster, a Schwinn stationary bike, a Spinner (tm) bike, and a Keiser M3. Most stationary bikes do adjust to fit people between approximately 5' and 6'3".

Contact the manufacturers to see if they can refer you to a local fitness center that has their bikes. Then you can go test them. Otherwise, try to find them at a store and take a test ride. This is important because you don't want to be stuck with a bike you dislike or makes you uncomfortable!

See if you can get any free DVDs or training. Is there any support if the bike breaks or needs maintenance? How will you learn to set up the bike properly, to ride with proper form, to exercise safely and to train appropriately?

You can also buy a a trainer, a frame that holds a regular bicycle still while you ride it. These are readily available at bike and sports shops too. I would definitely visit a local bike shop to discuss options involving trainers.

Could you guys give me some advice on work out routines using this workout equipment?

How to ride my bike comfortably?

best spinning bike seat cover on Spinner - Single spinning suspension point with versatile attachments ...
best spinning bike seat cover image
Q. I just got a new bike and im super excited! I rode it all over the neighborhood. When I got back my inner thighs hurt from where the seat was and my legs felt stiff. Am I riding wrong?

Answer
Several problems & possible answers. Get ready for a lengthy answer...

First, you haven't ridden a bicycle in a while. You're leg & butt muscles are not used to it or trained for it. Would be like asking me to walk into a gym & dead-lift 400 lbs. without training. Can't be done. Saddles (seats) being too wide will rub or chafe the inner thighs. Most "newbies" think a wide saddle is the answer. It's not! A saddle should support your 'sit bones' only. Anything more than that is a waste. Also...what type or style of bike is it? Road bikes are designed for the rider to cover a distance comfortably. Comfort, hybrid & cruiser bikes are designed to cover short distances only. How far did you ride?

Back to the proper saddle... Is it a women's specific saddle? Or is it a generic saddle on a discount store bicycle? I would HIGHLY suggest the saddle on 1st link below for any hybrid, comfort or mountain bike.

Legs hurting? Was the saddle at the proper height? 2nd link. A saddle that is too low will cramp up leg muscles. Here's another key word to remember..."cadence". That's the rpm at which you pedal using only moderate pedal pressure. Learn how & when to shift gears to reach & maintain a cadence of at least 70-90 rpm in gears that are easy to "spin" vs. "push" or mashing down on the pedals. Links 3 & 4. Pros often hit 100-125 rpm when accelerating or climbing a hill.

In short...ride more often but go for shorter rides to start. Then build your way up to longer rides. You're using muscles & parts of your body that may not have been used in years. Last thought...read the on-line pamphlet Bicycling Street Smarts from cover to cover. Last link below.

Name something embarrassing that has happened to you?

Q. I know people ask this all the time but there's always different people answering and you get to read some pretty crazy stories! It doesn't have to be the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you if you don't want to say or you've already answered it before, but just tell something embarrassing that has happened to you. Anything at all, but the more embarrassing the better! Everybody has a lame tripped and fell in public story, but I want to hear something more interesting and original than that.

Answer
I was in math class (I think it was) in high school. I let out a large sneeze and banged my head on the desk in the process. Quite a few people saw and laughed, the teacher however was trying best to resist from laughing. I even had a red mark on my forehead.
Another time (also in high school) I reading about socrates but every line with socrates I pronounced it "so-crates" like in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, even when I was corrected it still came out "so-crates".
I'm a young guy again... my dad has bought me a shiny new bike so I can get from and to work easily. "Hey, why don't you take it for a quick spin?" "Yeah sure..." So I get on the bike and ride decently fast around the parking lot to test the speed and control. I see not to far from me that a car is pulling out so I applied the back wheel brake. Wham! In an instant I'm lying on my back on the concrete and the bike is 10 feet from me. How did I get from point a to point b? I got to a point when I felt was an appropriate distance from a car and applied what I thought was the back wheel brake but unfortunately was the front wheel brake, I find myself flying off my seat and hurled onto the concrete all due to the rapid halt. Let me just add that this center with the bike shop is also a pretty popular place.
Young guy again... I'm out drinking with a few of my friends and we decide to to go check out this party. When we get there everything that is coming out of my mouth is either incoherent or not worded not the way I intended. So I'm in there having a good time and I start talking to this girl. "Hows you doin'", "I'm doing pretty good, you?", "Fanplastic"...(Can't remember the entirety of the conversation but leads up to her talking about how she looks or something)... (Here I come in when she say's she is ugly, it processes in my mind for a second, "tell the pretty lady she is pretty).. "Na! You're not pretty, your're ugly" "WHAT!" "I have to go feed my pigeon bird (there was a crazy looking bird at the party I was trying to feed earlier) I got to go!"
I don't know what else I can add, quite possibly a billion funny and sometimes embarrassing situations I've been in but don't remember.
Hold on, these I just remembered later today:
Once in the mall I waved to a cardboard cut out of a person thinking it was someone who knew me waving. Behind my reasoning: I'm extremely near sighted and well known.
I stopped into a chocolate store one time and spotted chocolate that looked like it was for sampling. I had a few but then a lady at the register said "Excuse me sir! those are not for sampling!" I freaked out, mumbled, and ran.
Once when I was getting high in the woods with some friends, a pal of mine on his way. It was decided that we make a gravity bong and I should get some water. So as I was making my way out of the woods on a path to get water for a gravity bong, I saw a silhouette of a dude running full pace towards me. It had to be an angry neighbor-guy-cop so I jumped out of the way and into some bushes. My bud (the silhouette I assumed was an angry neighbor) gracefully skipped over my feet, says back to me "hey dude I got some water", I remain on the ground still all freaked out and covered in dirt and stems, and my other pals are laughing.

I exercise sporadically (can do a few times a week for a few weeks then go days or weeks without & start the cycle again). I want to exercise almost daily (at least 5 times a week) to get my heart into shape but the excuses keep coming up.
Don't like 2 exercise in public by self (feel embarrassed) and don't know anyone 2 workout with like this, not much room in the house 2 do a lot (but I do exercise 2 fit tv at times), can't do at night when there's a free class at a local church (have other obligations can't get out of), don't have much money for gym membership (which would be the best thing for me I think, especially if it's competitive with encouragement). I live in a country-hick type city where I don't think it would be safe on the streets & there's not much going on exercise wise.
Motivated by 90s+ dance music (when I used to be really into exercise). I like dancing, gymnastics, etc. but there's no room for the kind I like. Are there free/cheap clubs out there? Suggestions?

looking to put on true dual rinehart exhaust on my 07 ultra classic any pros or cons?

bubba

i heard it doesnt give off as much heat with true duals

Answer
That system is a pretty decent performer...BUT....You WILL need to remap the injection with an exhaust change of that degree...a hi-flo air cleaner should also be added if it hasn't aleady been done.
HD's "Stage 1 Download" will NOT be sufficient for this system...you will need the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner and have it DYNO TUNED....

you can email me here through my profile if you ahve any questions...I also have some other recommendations I could make, but not enough room here...

An answer to a similar question..
They guys you were talking to are kind of right. With the pipes you are looking at, the bike really does need to have a hi-flo air cleaner put on. The dramatic decrease in restriction and the short length are the reason. Shorter pipes generally cause a drop in power in the low and mid-range, but can be compensated for somewhat by adding a set of Samson Torque Cones. The air cleaner will be needed to let more air in also to help compensate for the increase in exhaust flow. The Screamin Eagle air cleaner is ok, but the Arlen Ness Big Sucker (get the Stage 2 version) is better and about the same price. The S/E uses a shallow, dry filter material similar to a fiber glass mat, the Big Sucker uses a deeper K&N filter that flows considerably more air than the S/E. The stock HD air cleaner is THE most power restricting part on the bike. If you pull off the cover and look at the element, you will see why...it literally starves the engine for air, the reason for this from the factory...EPA NOISE pollution restrictions.
Now this is the MAJOR factor in the situation....DO NOT let anyone talk you into a Power Commander or Vance & Hines Fuel Pak, or ANY type of "piggy back"....FUEL...module!!!
You want the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner!!!
There are several reasons for this.
1. There is almost no room on a Softail to mount an add-on module, it basically get jammed and stuffed under the seat. "piggy back" modules plug in-line between the bikes computer and the wire harness, they are big and bulky and create extra wiring that is a ***** to mount, route and work around.
2. They do not do anything except control fuel, they have no timing or rev limit adjustments. The Power Commander 5 for 09-up bikes does have an Auto-Tune module that will allow the system to adjust the fuel by itself while you ride...BUT it is an additional couple hundred dollars, and you have to add yet another module to allow for timing adjustments...now you have 2 additional modules to try and figure how and where to mount. All together you will end up having arouns $1000 in modules.

The Screamin Eagle Super Tuner is basically nothing but software that reprograms the stock computer. It is a box that goes between 2 cables that link the bike to a PC. Once the computer is programmed and mapped on the dyno, you unplug it....nothing to mount. DO NOT LOSE THE BOX!!!!....if you do and need further tuning in the future for mods done later, you will have to buy another Tuner. The Tuner, once plugged in to a bike is "married" to that bike only and will not work on any other bikes. The Super Tuner has virtually unlimited tuning capabilites. It will allow for fuel mapping, accelerator pump feature for better throttle response, fully adjustable rev limit (do not rev a Softail past 6200, past that, the balancers spin too fast and can fly apart and destroy the engine), fully adjustable timing advance and curve tables, etc. I was amazed at what this thing can do when I was trained on it.
Having the timing properly set makes all the difference in the world. We tested bikes with stock timing and rev limits that had the fuel dialed in perfect for max power, then loaded in performance timing maps and had gains of 5-15 hp & tq.
And there is one more benefit to the Super Tuner compared to the others....The Tuner is about $400, the same as the others, bt no added expenses from add-on modules...its all built in.

Doing all of this, and having the bike tuned, WILL make it run cooler!!! The Twin Cams run hotter than the older Evo's like Mike has. The reasons are being tuned VERY lean for EPA standards and the Twin Cams use oil jets under the pistons. These jets squirt oil onto the bottom of the piston to help cool it. Stock engines run sooooo lean that they cause excessive heat.....here is the oxymoron....because they are so lean, HD designed the oil jets to cool the pistons....what actually happens is the pistons HEAT the oil!!!....tune the engine, richen it up, and the piston cools down, now, the oil can do its job and cool the piston....double cooling effect. Proper tuning will decreae oil temp by as much as 20-25 degress and promote longer, more reliable engine life...and you will FEEL the power increase.....generally, depending on the bike, combination of pipes and air cleaner, and how good the guy tuning the bike is, you can expect 10-15 hp & tq increase.

How do I stop the squeaking on my spinning bike?

The calipers and pads that provide the friction on the heavy wheel of my spinning bike squeak. How to I stop it from squeaking?

Answer
Lube the pivot points on the caliper and don't get any on the brake pads or the suface the pads ride on. Use something like Finishline's Triflow in a drip bottle. It comes with a little straw and will be easier to apply and not make a mess than an aerosol. You may also check the pads that privide the resistance and make sure they aren't worn. (most are felt and will wear out).

Can I use my road bike shoes without cleats on a spin bike and just use the straps?

MissLady

My cleats do not go with the pedals for the spin bike but can I still use my shoes and use the straps? They won't get ruined will they if I do not use the cleats?

Answer
There are several variables to consider. I recommend trying it and see how it works for you. If the shoes work, then check what sort of wear you see on the sole. If it's minor your good to go. I question what you will do when using your bike. installing cleats is not a 1 minute job.

How much time on a spinning bike should i spend daily to get reallyyy thin?

Chrisy

Im 17 and when i was long distance running my legs got soooo thin but toned. But i hurt my knee awhila ago so i cant run anymore :(
but im buying a spinning bike for my room.

how can i ride a spinning bike the right way
and how long to get really thin thighs, hips, ect. ???

Answer
Start out with an easy 10 min warm up in 3 steps. You want to pedal at 70-90 rpm with just enough resistance to get your heart rate to 85% of max. Start out with a 30 min goal and extend it to a hour or more. I shoot for two 60 min sessions, cut back on the food and you can lose weight like crazy.

You want a cold place like a garage or a fan so you don't sweat like crazy.

How long should I cycle my bike to make my thighs smaller?

im short and weigh 115 so my thighs just look out of place because i their huge.

Answer
Start out with an easy 10 min warm up and then start pedaling at 70-90 rpm's in a gear that is easy to spin. You will need to take short rides until your butt gets use to the saddle. Work your time up to a hour a day and ride at a decent pace. Riding the same distance wont help much one you get use to it so time is the better way to go. Diet is more important then cycling but you need both for best results. Figure 35 calories per mile so one stop at McD's can kill a whole weeks worth of riding. Don't expect results right away it takes time to get your body burning a bunch of calories.

Is spinning a good exercise to loose weight after having a baby?

wonder

Actually Iwonder which exercise works for entire bady weight loose. i heard Spinning works most on the legs and not an entire body, esp, not at all on abs? is it true? I am trying to loose my baby fat and wonder which cardio exercise is the best?

Answer
Any sort of aerobic exercise is good. Even walking with the baby in the stroller. As far as the uncomfortable seat, it depends on the manufacturer of the bike on the comfort factor. You can also buy padded bicycle shorts which help quite a bit also.

I am looking for shoes for spin class does anyone know where I can get a cheap but comfortable pair?

Answer
It depends on what pedals you are using. If you have flat pedals a simple pair of cross trainers is fine. If you need clipless, try looking at Nashbar.com or performancebike.com. they are always having sales on shoes.

Remember, that the type of clips for clipless pedals vary, and some shoes can only handle one type of clip (e.g. SPD or Look). If you don't know what you need, go to your local bike shop, and they can help you.

Good luck

Looking to buy a beach cruiser, I need advice on size and brands?

originale_

I'm 5'9 inches tall (guy) and I want to know what size bike I should buy and what brands are good. I'm looking to buy it used and want to spend no more than $125 Also, is there anything else I should look for when buying my bike? Thanks.

Answer
Cruisers defy normal bike-fitting rules, so just get one that you can sit on and put your feet comfortably on the ground. Felt has some awesome cruisers, but I doubt you can find one in your price range. The Trek cruisers are pretty cool, and not much new so if you can find one used you'll be in luck. Electra has really neat ones but they're the same or higher than the Felt pricewise.

Be sure the brakes work.....if it has foot brakes those can be a pain to fix but any decent shop can do it for you. Cruiser wheels aren't always the greatest, so spin them to see if they're true and don't hop (flat spots from curbs, etc). If it has a chainguard or fenders, look at them to see if they're bent badly.

If you scout around the thrift stores, antique shops, and garage sales you might be able to find a treasure for $20-$50. We do a weekly starbucks cruiser ride with 14-30 people every week....lots of them scored big with really sweet old bikes that way. The nice thing about modern cruisers is that they'll have aluminum wheels and decent brakes....the old bikes with steel wheels and flexy brakes are a nightmare when it's wet.

I just purchased a New in home Spin bike and I dont want it to become a new piece of furniture....I want to use it and continue to use it, but I am a serious couch potatoe...DVD's and the remote is what I'm used to....How can I get up?
Is it possible to gain new habits...purposly?

Answer
Yes, I too was and am secretly a couch tater. I get up with a good DVD workout, keep a diary of my good and bad habits- for accountablity, and have a secret body fantasy in mind while I workout.
If you dream it, you can acheive it- corny... hell yes, but it works. Get a picture of someone whose body you admire, and look at it everyday to keep sight of your goals. You can be just as hot with time and determination. It's going to be hard, but that is okay. It really is.

What should I get/ do to become a mountain bike racer?

I am an average novice bike rider. I want to know what I need to do to start training and eventually compete in mountain bike races. What kind of training and diet regiment should I follow? What kind of bike and helmet should I get? How do I even get into a race? I am looking for anyone who has experience in the sport who might be able to help an upstart wannabe racer make his dreams come true.

Answer
First off, I am sure you have a bike. But I am sure it's not 1. Fitted to you 2. Tuned 3. Has proper Components. If you want to race this summer the good news is you don't even need a bike right now. You need to be in the Gym 3-4 days a week taking Spinning classes, weight lifting on both legs and upper body and following a nutrition plan to skinny you up (yes Skinny riders are normally the fastest).

Bike, Ok so your now on your way to getting fit. That's good. But to race you need the right bike. Go to your best Local bike shop (check MTBR.com for review). And tell them your story, they will either outfit you with a better set up or take what you have and get it ready for racing..

Riding: MTB is not just about fitness or gear. But a lot about heart and finesse. I would find out from the shop were the last year races were, maybe there was a series that toured around your state. Then as soon as the weather is nice get out there and ride as much as you can, forget the Gym and just ride. It's a lot different then being on a stationary bike.

Once your comfy on the bike and all the trails (this is not as easy as you think). Make some friends that ride, again your shop is a good resource. and look into a good beginner race. This will get your feet wet with how it's done.

After you have raced a little the rest falls into place.. Good luck.

What happens to tire slime after its expiration date?

Colin

Hi,

Some while ago I bought some slime/tire sealant for my mountain bike. The tube it came in says it lasts from two to six months.

I was wondering: could I put some new slime into an inner tube with expired slime? What happens to the slime when it expires? Does it become like a paste or evaporate?

Thanks.

Answer
I have had Slime tubes in my MTB for over 2 years. Same tube, same slime. Every week or so they lose around 10 psi if left unchecked (maybe it's time for some new slime tubes) , but this is no problem if you regularly check and change your tyre pressure for riding different conditions/surfaces. Around 2 or 3 times in this time I have got a flat tyre. All I did was spin the wheel to re distribute the slime and then pump up it back up and it is fine.

Sure it was a bit messy when it was time to get a new rear tyre (it gets slimy between the tyre and tube!) but it was clear that after inspecting the tube, it had in fact sealed quite a few small punctures (got bored and gave up counting after around 10). Once in the new tyre I gave it a nice spin and spread the slime out and it is fine.

So no need to fix a puncture during the whole life of an MTB tyre used all different conditions/surfaces.

All the nay sayers who say Slime does not work, you must have only had experience with cheap products and not proper Slime ( http://www.slime.com/ ) or not used them at all and just going by a few bad reviews. And yes, the valve would clog up if you let the air of of your tube tooo fast!

So yeah, to answer your question, don't worry mine are keeping my tyres full of air and stopping puncture after 2 years, maybe I will get some new tubes and slime when I wear out these tyres...

Three months ago I bought a Schwinn Spinner Pro spinning bike on Craiglist. I enjoyed it for about 2 months before it started making very loud clicking sounds when I pedal it.

Does anyone know what the problem could be -- and how I can fix it?

If not, who would be able to fix it? Since I bought it used, I don't have any repair or service information. (I live in the Chicago area now.)

Answer
Any bike shop should be able to fix it for you. The other guy that posted does not realize this is an exercise bike and not a normal bike so it doesn't have derailleurs . If i had to guess id say the problem is with the crank.

How can I match beats per minute of music to indoor cycyling cadence?

funinsun

(The spin bikes at my gym have cadence displays on them). If my song is 120 bpm should my cadence also be 120?

Also, how do I determine my running cadence? Do I count strides in a minute?

Answer
Use a watch with a second hand you want to count your knee coming up 12-15 times in ten seconds. Match your running to your fitness level cadence is not important in running. Run hard enough that you do not get out of breath. The cadence in cycling is so you don't pedal to hard and it's more efficient.

How is a regular exercise bike different than a spinning bike?

best quality spinning bike on Spin Bike 680 by Progression Fitness | Flaman Fitness
best quality spinning bike image

Kimmy

The buzz lately is that you can burn about 500 calories, tone up and lose weight quickly by exercising for only 30 minutes on a spinning bike.

I have a regular exercise bike and cannot afford a spinning bike or classes. Would I be able to achieve the same results by exercising for 30 minutes a day on my exercise bike?

Please explain to me the difference between the two bikes and how they work differently to give different results?

Answer
The primary difference is the adjustability and the quality that goes into the drive mechanism. Spinning bikes, as the name implies, spin a weighted flywheel using the power of your legs. The tension you set, in conjunction with the weight of the flywheel, determine the resistance you feel. This provides a much more realistic effect in terms of how it uses your muscles. A old school excercise bike isnt as good at effectively targeting the muscle used and doesnt provide as much of a realistic cycling feel.

That said, if your goal is just to get a workout in you arent going to miss much. A competitive cyclist would notice the difference but a casual rider just looking to burn some calories probably will notice only the terribly uncomfortable saddle of an old excercise bike.

Think of it as the diffference between running wind sprints vs. running parachute assisted acceleration sprints.... Unless you're a pro athlete working on dropping your 40yd times, wind sprints is just fine. Similar situation here. If you're gonna be heading to the races, start spining.. If you just want a workout save the money.

PS- If you get serious about riding and you really want the best set-up, IMO its using your road bike on resistance trainer like the cycleops fluid2 or something similar. It lets you keep your cockpit setup (duh, its your bike) but gives you the indoor training option for those shoddy days when you dont want to go outside and ride.

What is the difference between a spinner bike and an exercise bike?
