This is for the ladies I think...How do I keep from chaffing while Spinning or bike riding?

Q. I am a semi-out of shape overweight woman and I have gone spinning two times. I have no problem keeping up or dealing with the 60 minute workout but the guy who runs the program keeps telling me that my butt will toughen up. Ladies I don't have the nerve to tell him that it is not the butt that is getting sore but urr other parts even with a Gel seat. HELP ANY SUGGESTIONS.

Answer
Hum... There are some good suggestions in here and a couple of bad ones as well.

You ought to know, there are really two major problems that can arise from sitting on a bicycle seat.

The first problem is pressure which can cause bruising. A gel seat cover and chamois can help with bruising. Also, your bottom will toughen up in a few weeks and you won't be as troubled by it. Getting off the saddle and pedalling while standing on occaision will help to releive pressure, as well.

The second problem is chaffing. Chaffing is caused by friction and you've got to eliminate the causes of friction to deal with the problem. Chaffing can lead to saddle sores, so you don't want to ignore it.

First, good, snug fitting cycling shorts with a chamois are an absolute necessity. If you already have some tight exercise shorts, you may want to buy cycling briefs with a chamois to go under your exercise shorts. Loose clothing is your enemy as bunching and gathering of fabric causes friction on tender bottom parts.

Secondly, be sure you go commando when you get the cycling shorts. Again, extra layers of fabric are your enemy.

Thirdly, a lubricant like Assos Chamois Cream or Paceline Chamois Butt'r will help. Body Glide may help but I tend to think it is better for preventing blisters where there is skin on skin contact when running (like toes) than for keeping my bottom from chaffing. The Assos product is medicated and will help clear up existing saddle sores and keep them from getting infected. It is, however, very expensive.

Talcum may help. I have never tried that before. Certainly it is cheap enough to try once, though.

Hope this helps.

Will a bike computer work on an indoor trainer?

me

I am planning on buying an indoor bicycle trainer so that i can ride my bike it my house when it is too cold out. I want to keep track of my speed and how far i am going, so figured i would get a cheap Bell one. I am just curious is it will work since it is a different set up. Thanks for your help!

Answer
It will work, but you have to install the sensor on the rear wheel, the only one that spins. The wireless computers sometimes don't get the signal from the back, so get a wired one. A cheap one will work but get one with cadence counter. That is a very important tool for your training. It will tell you cadence, current speed, average speed speed, max speed, distance for the ride, distance for the week, total distance (odo), and time. I use a cateye. since there are two sensor, one for the wheel and one for the crank, you may want to see if the shop will install it for free or a small fee. If you don't have a trainer yet, I recommend the Kinetic by Kurt fluid. It mimics going in a slight incline. I paid less than that at my local bike shop.

Which is the best elliptical trainer? The one with front drive or rear drive mechanism ?

spin bike brands review on Velocity Fitness Spin Bike (Black) - CHBS2002IS - Product Reviews and ...
spin bike brands review image

Ramkumar

Answer
Best is subjective (and unless price doesn't matter should be based on value for the price). My wife is an elliptical fan (I prefer my spin bike) and tried several before choosing the Octane (front drive) because it 'felt the best".

The position of the drive is more a personal preference than a determinant of which is the best trainer. There are several "best elliptical trainer" sites out there (Google it), but the independent review site Consumer Reports' top rated elliptical trainer (Diamond Back 1260Ef) is a front drive model, while the 2nd and 3rd (tied) were front drive and rear drive models (Sole E35 and Pacemaster Silver XT). Note that these models, along with Precor and Octane are on most lists of top brands/models ... all of which feature a mix of front and back drive designs.

Spinning bikes? Better? Worse?

I'm looking into getting a spinning bike but I'm really lost as to which one to get. The main brands that I'm looking at are revmaster, which I think is ou of my league pricewise. The schwinn, not much better in terms of money but I've actually heard of them. And then the mad dogg brand original spinner bikes, which vary in price but since I've heard that they coined the name spinning I assume they have something more going on there. I'm leanin towards the spinning brand because they have some lower priced bikes but I intend to not just sit but do the harder rides sk I'm looking for one that is sturdy and can take the harder workouts. Please give your opinion if you actually have or have used a spinning bike not just where I should be looking. Thanks!

Answer
Spinning is trademarked because of the type of training that the instructors must go through in order to teach the classes, it really doesn't have anything to do with the equipment, it is just a brand name. I taught classes on Schwinn's and Lemond's for 5 years and didn't have any real problems with either of them. I would say that the Lemond's were a little higher quality and included cadence monitors. I read in a magazine that Lance was coming out with a spinning bike. I haven't heard any reviews, but it looks interesting. Below is the link. Also, one of my favorite indoor rides has always been on Cycleops (link below) They are ultra smooth and sturdy for out of the saddle sprints. I don't have as much experience with "Spinning" bikes because I never spent the money to get certified, but I've heard that it's no different than Schwinn and AGS certifications.

How is a regular exercise bike different than a spinning bike?

best spinning bike for the money on Keiser spin bikes: Keiser M3 Plus Review | Spinning Bike Reviews Hub
best spinning bike for the money image

The buzz lately is that you can burn about 500 calories, tone up and lose weight quickly by exercising for only 30 minutes on a spinning bike.

I have a regular exercise bike and cannot afford a spinning bike or classes. Would I be able to achieve the same results by exercising for 30 minutes a day on my exercise bike?

Please explain to me the difference between the two bikes and how they work differently to give different results?

Answer
The primary difference is the adjustability and the quality that goes into the drive mechanism. Spinning bikes, as the name implies, spin a weighted flywheel using the power of your legs. The tension you set, in conjunction with the weight of the flywheel, determine the resistance you feel. This provides a much more realistic effect in terms of how it uses your muscles. A old school excercise bike isnt as good at effectively targeting the muscle used and doesnt provide as much of a realistic cycling feel.

That said, if your goal is just to get a workout in you arent going to miss much. A competitive cyclist would notice the difference but a casual rider just looking to burn some calories probably will notice only the terribly uncomfortable saddle of an old excercise bike.

Think of it as the diffference between running wind sprints vs. running parachute assisted acceleration sprints.... Unless you're a pro athlete working on dropping your 40yd times, wind sprints is just fine. Similar situation here. If you're gonna be heading to the races, start spining.. If you just want a workout save the money.

PS- If you get serious about riding and you really want the best set-up, IMO its using your road bike on resistance trainer like the cycleops fluid2 or something similar. It lets you keep your cockpit setup (duh, its your bike) but gives you the indoor training option for those shoddy days when you dont want to go outside and ride.

How do I stop the squeaking on my spinning bike?

Dan

The calipers and pads that provide the friction on the heavy wheel of my spinning bike squeak. How to I stop it from squeaking?

Answer
Lube the pivot points on the caliper and don't get any on the brake pads or the suface the pads ride on. Use something like Finishline's Triflow in a drip bottle. It comes with a little straw and will be easier to apply and not make a mess than an aerosol. You may also check the pads that privide the resistance and make sure they aren't worn. (most are felt and will wear out).

best spin bike for weight loss on Did It All By Myself: Spinning Bike vs Stationary Bike
best spin bike for weight loss image

grizwold10

programme. I dont really want to build my legs though as they are quite big already. I am more interested in definition/weight loss. Can anybody suggest the frequency of training/milage i should be doing? Distance or hills? And does anybody know of any good cycling web sites with training tips on etc? Many thanks in advance..:)

Answer
This is easy. Get your heart rate up high (80% of max) for as long as you can stand it and spin, spin, spin. Don't ever mash: shift to a lower gear and spin. Hills, flats...doesn't matter, just spin. And in case I didn't mention it before: spin.

Distance is the key factor. Staying on the bike long enough to burn fat reserves builds definition and makes for true lasting weight loss. Remember: spinning builds lean muscle (mashing builds bulk).

Performance's web site has a good training section and Bicycling magazine devotes about half its pages to training in the spring issues.

How do I go about getting a thigh gap properly?

Dixie

I understand that diet has a lot to do with weight loss, and I've taken the necessary dietary steps, and I've been doing cardio every day at the gym for an hour or more with the treadmill, zumba, and spin classes. However, I keep getting mixed responses when it comes to getting a thigh gap. I hear that if you work it out (like exercises rather than cardio) the muscles will get bigger, and prevent a thigh gap, so cardio for burning fat is the best option. I also hear that there are exercises specifically for getting a thigh gap. So...I just wanted to get that cleared up. =p I understand cardio is fantastic for losing fat, which is what I want. But I'm not sure if that's the best way to get the thigh gap I want. I also know that not ALL people can get a thigh gap, but, if I CAN, I need to figure out how to do it. Toning my butt up wouldn't be a bad thing either, if there are any suggestions for that, as well. =p Thank you!

Answer
A thigh gap is not a precise biometric. It's a vague concept with no clear definition. For example, do the feet have to be together and touching to properly measure the thigh gap or is shoulder width okay? Different people would answer differently. However, in general, everyone has the potential for a thigh gap because the muscles at the top of the thigh do not touch. If all the fat in and outside the muscle is stripped away, the thighs won't touch because there is something between them...the genitals.

If you don't have a thigh gap, you have thigh fat and you'll have to lose it. Your only choice is to lose fat and wait for the gap to appear. How long that takes will depend on your skeletal structure, pelvic width, thigh muscle size, and amount of thigh fat so there's no way to predict it. And, you may not like where else on your body the fat leaves as you diet down in body fat. For example, you could lose cup size as well. And you may have to lose so much body fat you will be at a dangerously low level of fat (<10%) in which case you can only reconcile yourself to a life with no thigh gap. Not everyone can have a thigh gap and still be at a healthy body fat level and that's out of your control and determined by your fat distribution and genetics.

In case you don't know how to lose fat, read my answer about how to lose fat ---> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=As615QJM4X_3ID9_05qmmlXty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20111028185603AAVcP4D

There are no exercises which will help in any significant way because spot fat reduction is impossible without surgery. Where your body stores and removes fat is determined by your genetics and there is nothing you can do to change that short of radical procedures such as liposuction. And, in general, where it stores fat first is where it will lose it last and visa versa. The world of health and fitness has an unfortunate abundance of myths and spot reduction is one of them. There is no exercise, no pill, no supplements, no spa treatment, and no natural way to spot reduce. Your only choice is to create a caloric deficit with diet and exercise, burn fat, and wait for it to leave the desired body parts.

http://www.fitnesstipsforlife.com/the-spot-reduction-myth.html
http://scoobysworkshop.com/SpotRemoval.htm

Always remember that any exercise will burn calories but no exercise will burn fat unless your diet allows it. You can burn fat in your sleep or you can run all day and never burn any fat. It all depends on your diet.

Fat loss is determined by calorie control, not by exercise. Good exercises for burning calories are speed walking, biking, swimming, and ANY other physical activity which makes you move a lot of weight for a long time. But NO exercise is good for burning fat if you eat too many calories because you can always eat more calories than you can burn.

Too many people waste energy and time because they do not understand this one simple point. The result is too often giving up in frustration, abandoning gym memberships they continue to pay for, and many other unnecessary problems not the least of which is a lack of success.

An average person must walk about five miles every day of the week to burn the calories equivalent to a pound of body fat. So, unless you think walking five miles a day or doing that amount of exercise is for you, focus your fat loss program on diet.

Diet for fat loss. Exercise for fitness.

Here are some of the most fit girls on the planet. Gabby (center) has a thigh gap. The others, not so much. Yes, gymnasts have thigh fat too.

Where can I find reviews and opinions online for Cateye CC-MC100W Micro Wireless 10-Function Bicycle Computer (Silver)

Answer
By MikeUm (Twin Cities, MN)
The Micro Wireless is one of the newest additions to the Cay Eye Companies long line of trusted cyclocomputers. I had a hard time choosing between this and a more expensive model with heart rate and cadence.

I decided to go with this and purchased a separate wrist HR monitor for around 25 bucks. It saved a good deal of money and could be the solution to one of your concerns.

If you are looking for a basic model without wireless: I suggest checking out the "Enduro 8"; it is cheaper and has most of the basic features (without wireless and backlight).

With that said: I really like this model, it's smaller and has more features than the Enduro; wireless and back-light. It was easier to setup and quickly switches between bikes (with the purchase of a second mount/sensor kit.)

I broke the computer mount in a minor training collision and Cay Eye sent me a replacement mount for free. I suggest you "defiantly get a cat eye", especially at this price; they have great customer service and make an excellent wireless computer.
(I have used this product for six months.)

By jay kenyon "jayhawkeye2" (LAS VEGAS, NV USA)
the two things you need in a good cyclometer is that it is small and lightweight, but has all the features you need. This one fills both creteria nicely. The unit is small, but is incredibly easy to read and navigate. and, if you are like me, the last cyclometer you owned consisted of a wire running down your fork -- forget it, this one is wireless. It does the job perfectly, at a great price.

By Zzyzx (Burbank, CA United States)
First off, I am a casual biker so I didn't know if I "needed" this or not. Now that I have it, I really dig it!
Mounting the whole thing took me about 20 minutes--15 to read the pictograph directions and 5 to actually put it on. But that is because I am a little cautious and really wanted to do it right the first time. It actually was quite easy because the installation diagram is very detailed, showing exactly which direction the pieces go, in what order, etc. The computer mounts on the handlebar with double-sided tape and cable ties, keeping it plenty tight and secure. The sending device attaches to the fork the same way and is very ingenious the way it reads off the magnet you attach to the spoke.
A little bit harder was programming it the first time, following the menu flow digrams. But after a few minutes it was very intuitive and I got it set up (with mph, wheel size, etc.) and was ready to take it for a test spin. Which is where its greatness was immediately apparent. I followed a route I knew and the odometer was spot on. The elapsed time pauses when you do, the average and max speeds worked great. In fact, this thing is amazing!
So, bottom line, even if you don't think you need one, you'll soon wonder how you got along without it. Well built, high quality, instructions in about 20 languages, fun to use, and practical. Can't beat it.

Answer
I didn't but two friends of mine bought Motos. A Fly Pro and a Le Champion. Both are extremely happy with their bikes. I got to take both for a spin and thought they were very good bikes and spec'ed better than any bike for the price.

The Le champion was one size too big for me but still felt good and had very similar characteristics to my Cannondale which I love. Stiff frame and tracked true. The AC 420 wheels are great. The 10 Ultergra shifted better than my 9 speed. It came with Kenda tires, they do the job but aren't my favorite tire. The Fly Pro has an awesome flat black paint job. Came with super light Kenda's with small knobs, not good for muddy or very loose conditions but fast. Both these bikes are crazy light as well. If I didn't have my bikes I'd buy both.

What are The Effects of Sprint Running Training on Sloping Surfaces?

anthony m

Answer
Ahhh... hill sprints. I use them in the winter for cycling training, and whenever I travel for work and can't ride.

They're awesome. Find a hill or some stairs. Run up (10-30 seconds sprinting), walk down, repeat until you're unable to run all the way up.

Elegant simplicity but just about the toughest workout you can imagine.

Effects: increased vo2max (this is documented in peer reviewed double blind studies). Improved (faster) recovery time from max efforts (measured by %vo2max and pulse).

Translation to the bike: you'll be able to sprint over short hills much easier, climb standin much easier and with confidence that your legs and lungs will hold up, and once you sit down over the top and spin, you'll recover much faster and be able to hammer again.

Good stuff.

p.s. if you do hill repeats on a bicycle, it's also excellent training and since it's "specific" to cycling your benefits will be even better.

Ciara

I just got a spinning bike and i have decided to lose weight again. I rode today and I rode for 45 minutes with no problem. (How many times a week and how long each time should I cycle to lose weight?) I need to lose around 100 pounds. I will be eating healthy and drinking water too.

Answer
oh have i got the thing for you, MEGA-T pills i bought mine at walmart. the help straighten your system out so your body loses the weight it should. i swear by them i use them and i also have a 100 lbs. to lose:(...i done got so big it is hard to walk and get all the exrecise i need.i just hurt all over. well i took these pills, my scales are broke so i went by my measuring tape. one of those sewing ones. measured my stomach at its biggest point. then started the pills. 3 days later someone said i just seen you the other day, but now you have lost some weight what did u do. i forgot about the pills i said nothing.just thought they were messing with me.when i got home i remembered i was taking the pills so i measured myself again. i had lost 43 inches off my stomach in 4 days.it really freaked me out..well i took 2 a day one at 6am and 1 pill at 3pm cause i didn't want to be up all night if thats what these pills would do. you never know.i was fine. had to stay close to the bathroom for 3 days. but after that everything calmed down.my waist started at 52 inches. i am now at 46 inchs. i ram out of the pills a week after i started them,my husband and i was both taking them. so i said i want to see how fast i gain it back. i haven't. it has been 3 weeks since i ran out. and yes i plan on getting me some more this week.with those and exercise you will lose a lot of weight but dont take more than they recommend please. and read up on the stuff in the pills.i even had pitting in my legs and ankels, and it took all my water retention out. i feel great.and i am ready t feel better.so mega-t green tea pills.i think i paid 6.97 for mine.and the exercise bike. the more you speed your heart rate up for a few minutes then let it go back down, then up again. will help your metabolisim. also you can try niacin. that is suppose to help your matabolisim, but becareful. just one pill. cause you always want to just start slow with something new. see how your body does. good luck. sorry so long.

I will eat very healthy and how much of a difference will 50 squats, 50 push ups and 50 crunches a day make? will it be noticeable? any other tips on workouts i should do or eating tips? thanks a ton :)

Answer
I would try doing more core exercises and more pushups in addition to your 50's of each...

That will tone you up, but if that's all you wanna do then try like 3 or 4 sets of those! Plus, you need anywhere from 30-60min of cardio (I'd choose a spin bike if I were you).

Here's these:

http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/workout/cardio/no-treadmill/15-minute-fat-burning-cardio-workout/ (if you don't have time, this takes 15min)

Pick up a 17 Magazine, they have a section just for simple exercises and healthy eating habits.

PS: Stop eating gluten before you go cus gluten helps the fat layer in your body hold on to extra water, gives you the "puffy" look even if you're not. You'll see better results that way.

How many calories do I burn spinning.?

Josh

Hi

I recently started spinning on a startrac bike at my gym. The bike features a large lcd touch screen display and is fairly high tech. However, I feel that the calorie count my be a little off.

Stats:
155 lb.
5'9 ft
Calories one hour: 800
Resistance low to moderate

Unusually on livestrong the count says 500 calories as does other websites. Though the machine does not have a heart rate moniter I was windering how accurate the calorie count on the machine is verses websites?

Answer
500-600 calories seem accurate. If you want to know your exact burn in the future, I would really recommend wearing an HRM watch. I've had mine for 8 years now and I use it daily. I love it and I always know my exact calories burned! : )

can i still eat meat and dairy?
how many hours a day? 2,3,4?

Answer
Everyone is destined to have a different body shape. You can't turn your body into someone else's, but you can make the most of what you do have.

Eating meat and dairy are great for some, not so great for others. Some people thrive as vegetarians, and others have more trouble absorbing the necessary nutrition from grains and legumes. Many people do well cutting down on meat, but still including some. I find my body does best when I include wild-caught fish, grass-fed meat and dairy from grass-fed cows, and organic pastured poultry and eggs.

I have trouble assimilating nutrients from vegan protein sources, so after years as a vegetarian then vegan I returned to eating ethically sourced meat and animal products. Every body is different.

Becoming vegetarian is not a ticket to weight loss - for every person who loses weight as a vegetarian there is another who gains. Some of those vegetarians who lose weight initially gain it back really soon, and in ways they don't like.

Almost everyone should eat way more veggies and fruits, though! And most of us would do well to eliminate refined sugars and refined grains.

Exercise in reasonable quantities is good for most people, but overexercising will injure you and actually cause your metabolism to slow down, not speed up.

Several hours a day of dedicated exercise is definitely overexercising. Don't do it. Don't try to punish yourself. Do movement you enjoy! Include variety. And start slowly. Starting off with too much too soon will likely get you injured.

Start with 30 minutes to an hour of exercise each day, on most but not all days. Rest days are important too! Try to be generally active during the day too (walking instead of driving, getting up to change the channel instead of using the remote, stretch a little bit every hour or so.)

Try doing a walk/jog combo for half an hour two days a week, building up until you can jog the whole time. When you can jog or run for a half hour at a stretch, then start to incorporate sprint workouts. ALWAYS warm up gently, and stretch after working out.

Use the spinning bike a couple days a week. Do the yoga videos a couple times a week. Put together a strength training routine with pushups, lunges, crunches, tricep dips, squats, and four-counts (also called burpees and squat thrusts - you've probably done them in gym class.) Building lean muscle will burn fat and sculpt your shape faster than anything else. Squats, lunges, and wall-sits are especially great for lifting and toning your bum. Strength training will not make you bulky; that's not how women's bodies work. Strength training is a great ally for sculpting.

Good luck, and have FUN working out! If it isn't fun, you won't stick with it.

What kind of bikes do pros use in bmx park?

hosando

it allows them to jump high and spins there handlebars. not racing bikes

Answer
Today's riders are riding anything from 20 inch BMX to full suspension mountain bikes in parks. Many riders are sponsored. For instance Dave Mirra is sponsored by Haro. Someone mentioned Redline. They sponsor Tim "Fuzzy" Hall... The list goes on. If you are looking for a specific bike you need to go get on one. Do not go to Wal Mart. The first time you huck one of those, pieces will break. You will spend $ for a good bike. Jumping high is about speed and confidence. Spinning the bars are done one of three ways. Yes with gyros. These allow the cables to be "untangled" in the headset. The second is to ride with out brakes. Mat Hoffman rides brake-less... The third is to have brakes spin one way one time and the other the next. If you don't get it right you bind up and have a problem though...

How do I customize my Diamondback bmx bike?

Tyler P

I have a stock Diamondback '04 Grind bmx bike and I want to customize it to a good flatland bmx. Can someone please tell me what kind of sprockets, wheels, forks, etc. I should put on it? Thanks

Answer
A new Flatland bmx will set you back between US$350 and US$2,000... depending on how good you want your parts to be. Obviously, the $2,000 bike will come with the best parts on the market today. Here's an example... http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1311
At the cheaper end, you have the beginner-orientated bike, which has low-end parts, but good to start out with. Here's an example .. http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1124

As a rule of thumb, the more expensive a bike or part is, the lighter it will be, over the cheaper parts. When it comes to Flatland, a light bike is usually better, and will allow you to develop your skills a lot faster, and let you ride longer, without getting as tired as you would if you were riding a street bike for Flatland.

So in saying all that, here are your options...

1: Buy all new flatland parts for your current frame. http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=2
This option will set you back around $1000-1200, but keep in mind, your frame is way heavier than any flatland frame on the market, so you will more than likely switch to a flatland frame soon enough. If ur outlaying all that money for new parts, throw in the extra $300 and get urself a nice Flatland frame while ur at it... http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=26

2) If ur on a budget, spending thousands on a bike might not be such a good idea, and since ur new to Flatland, you might wanna get a good beginners bike, and then upgrade ur parts as you feel you need to, or can afford to. This way, you have a frame that you can stick with for years, without needing to upgrade. A good example of this kind of bike is this one... http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1322 or this one... http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1331
That last one is a beginner bike, but the same bike, with pro-range parts on it, looks like this... http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1309, which is something you can turn the 'beginner bike' into, with some extra money.

You can still ride Flat on a street bike, if you change a few parts, it will just not be as 'smooth' and easy as riding a flatland bike. Heres what you will need to do to your current bike if you wanna make it more of a flat-bike...
- Get a longer seat post, around 300mm, and set it to max. height, as noted on the bottom of the post.
- Get minimal or zero offset forks, to make front wheel tricks way easier. They allow u to pop up onto the front wheel so eaisly.
- Put pegs on, all round.
- Be sure to have a gyro set up for back brakes
- Put a shorter reach stem on. Anywhere from 26mm-40mm.
- Get tyres no wider than 1.95, and make sure they're high-psi. For flatland, 120psi is super smooth for spinning and rolling.
- If you really wanna lighten ur bike without spending much, take the cranks off. You'll save about 2 kilos, and you can do a lot of tricks without needing to pedal. It's not a popular option, but it's a cheaper one.

So there are some options for you. The main deciding factor for people buying a Flatland bike, is budget. I splurged and bought pro-everything when I build mine, so I knew nothing was going to hold me back from learning, except myself. Right now, there is 10% off on all parts and bikes from the site I've posted links to, so now is the time to buy... you'll save a packet.
Email me if you have any more questions about any of this. :)

How can I make my bike sound better?

Jake

I'm personally not worried about how loud my bike is, I have a 2004 Honda rebel 250. Will taking the baffles out mess up he bike? And is there any way I can remove them without drilling holes? I just want a quick easy way to make it sound better. I don't want to put to much time and money into a bike when I'm getting another soon. Any help?

Answer
It won't hurt performance, but you might have to rejet the carb.

Besides the sound baffles there are two other little items in the exhaust. There is also a spark arrestor screen and a turbulence screw.

The spark arrestor screen is just that, a screen that stops hot carbon pieces from exiting the exhaust. It is mainly made for off road, but is also required on road bikes.

The turbulence screw is something most guys don't know about. It looks like a giant screw thread or auger thread and it is welded into the exhaust pipes. The turbulence screw spins the exhaust gases so it doesn't free flow out.

I have never done it to a Honda Reble, but have done it to several other Honda's in the past. I would purchase a new muffler/silencer from an after market company that was a free flowing design. You can pick up used motorcycle silencers for under $50. Cut the pipes at where they line up with the back of the engine cases. Add an extension pipe (if needed) so you can mount the new/used muffler/silencer.

The motorcycle superstore sells brand new bolt on mufflers for under $100: http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/13/118/39114/ITEM/Emgo-Dunstall-Replica-Universal-Muffler.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch

You can also make a car glass pack fit. They are only $25 new: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_thrush-glass-pack-mufflers-dynomax_5291585-p?zoneAssigned=1

If you are the ultimate cheap bastard and you do not want to drill out the baffles, you can try ramming them out. This will generally not work, because they are welded into place. You would need a really long metal rod center punch. This will work for the spark arrestor part, but not the baffles or the turbulence screw.

I have a physical fitness test that I am trying to prepare for, the criteria are:

5.2 miles (10km) in under 24 minutes with at least 2 kp of resistance

What are some good exercises, routines, plans, or workouts that will help me prepare for this fitness test?

The more info the better, thank you.
I have maybe 3 weeks to prepare

Answer
Several problems:

1. Your data is flawed in several ways, so its hard to judge what you're being asked to do. 10km = 6.2 miles for one, for two, I've never seen kilopascal used with reference to anything bike related, other than tire pressure. On a stationary bike, watts is the usual measurement. Outside, you shouldn't break a sweat going 10k in 24 minutes.

2. 3 weeks isn't very long. You're not going to change your fitness level very much in that time. Endurance athletes know that today you get the benefit of the workout you did 2 weeks ago. Given that, you've got a week to work with as far as fitness is concerned. Working on your cycling form, cadence, and bike setup will probably gain you more than anything you can do to your cardio capacity.

3. If I'm training for a sprint race like that, I'm going to do a lot of intervals. Indoors, I usually do that while watching a football game or NASCAR race. Start riding at moderate cadence and resistance for 10 or 15 minutes to get warmed up, then every time a commercial comes on, go up three clicks on the resistance and sprint (over 100rpm) until the game/race comes back on, then click down and spin easy til the next commercial. A couple hours of that will get your attention. Outside, it would be something like hard for a mile, easy for a half.

Does spinning around in circles help you lose weight?

=]

My friend is trying to convince me that if you spin around in circles like a little kid or something, it will help you loose weight effectively. She SWEARS she read it somewhere but I can't find it so I think she's making it up :| Is it true?

Answer
Any extra movement or exercise that you do will help, but spinning around in circles would not be a very effective or sensible approach. Weight loss is an overall process and there are no magic answers. Pay no attention to weight loss supplements and pills and all the latest fads. You need to think about many factors but most of them are related to issues we've known about for a very long time. There are many sensible things you can do that will make a tremendous difference over the long term if you need to lose weight. It can be done in a healthy way. This is what has worked for me.

Keeping a food journal really does help. It will give you a much better sense of how much you are eating, and when, and why.

Make a few additional small changes - walk everywhere, always use stairs instead of elevators, walk on escalators, get up and move around at least once an hour if your work or your life in general is sedentary, walk every day, use a pedometer. Walking 10,000 steps a day is a really good idea. Build up to a long brisk walk everyday, or most days. Be more active and watch less TV and spend less time on the computer. Buy one piece of exercise equipment to have at home and be strict with yourself about using it. Sometimes you can find mini-steppers or exercise bikes at second hand stores and thrift stores for just a few dollars.

Start a weight lifting routine. Join a gym. Possibly you can find one that has someone who specializes in weight lifting programs for beginners. Weight lifting will increase your metabolism as well as improve posture and appearance overall. Even if you can't get to the gym you can work out at home using things around the house. Invest in a good weight training book. The Dummies series actually has a good one.

In terms of diet, cut out or reduce things like junk food, pop, fat, fast food. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish. Particularly if you choose a vegetarian lifestyle include natural peanut butter, hummus, dried fruit and nuts. Pay close attention to getting the nutrients your body needs to be healthy.

Make your portion sizes smaller. Use a smaller plate - in our society we have become accustomed to thinking that we need a large plate of food at every meal, and we don't. About quarter of your plate of food should be protein and at least half of it should be veggies.

Learn to count calories. At your current weight and activity level, you may possibly need about 2000 calories or more to maintain your current weight. So you will lose weight at a reasonable and healthy rate if you cut back to about 1600 or 1700 calories a day.

Eat small amounts frequently, rather than three large meals. Never skip breakfast. Include some protein in your breakfast. It will help get you through the day.

Drink plenty of water, at least 8 big glasses of water a day, and more if it is very hot, if you sweat a lot, or if you are exercising intensely, and eliminate fruit juices. Fruit juices have too many calories, so get your vitamins from fresh fruit, not the juice. You will begin to see changes in your body.

An area that many people overlook is getting enough sleep. You are much more likely to overeat or to binge eat if you are tired and not well rested, so get enough sleep.

Check out websites about nutrition, exercise, weight training, etc. Here are a few helpful links.
