Can I use my road bike shoes without cleats on a spin bike and just use the straps?

MissLady

My cleats do not go with the pedals for the spin bike but can I still use my shoes and use the straps? They won't get ruined will they if I do not use the cleats?

Answer
There are several variables to consider. I recommend trying it and see how it works for you. If the shoes work, then check what sort of wear you see on the sole. If it's minor your good to go. I question what you will do when using your bike. installing cleats is not a 1 minute job.

I just bought a new spin bike and it seems to be quite loud how do I fix this?

KarinMyanm

It is a proform 290 spx if that helps. I just bought it today and when operating it seems to be quite loud in the chain area or the flywheel I am not quite sure but I have been on spin bikes before and they are pretty much silent and this one is not. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Answer
try bike sites like http://www.2wheelbikes.com for info.

I cannot afford to join a gym, but have been working out at home, albeit any success. I want to add spinning and could afford a used stationary bike. Are they the same piece of machinery?

Answer
No, the spinning bike and the stationary bike are fundamentally different. The difference is in the geometry, the mechanism, the perceived effort.
I would recommend against it. Can you get a used bike and just ride it outside? It will be way more beneficial, a lot more fun and probably cheaper if you can get on a garage sale somewhere.

What are the best shoes for spinning?

monie

I am looking for shoes for spin class does anyone know where I can get a cheap but comfortable pair?

Answer
It depends on what pedals you are using. If you have flat pedals a simple pair of cross trainers is fine. If you need clipless, try looking at Nashbar.com or performancebike.com. they are always having sales on shoes.

Remember, that the type of clips for clipless pedals vary, and some shoes can only handle one type of clip (e.g. SPD or Look). If you don't know what you need, go to your local bike shop, and they can help you.

Good luck

I just purchased a New in home Spin bike and I dont want it to become a new piece of furniture....I want to use it and continue to use it, but I am a serious couch potatoe...DVD's and the remote is what I'm used to....How can I get up?
Is it possible to gain new habits...purposly?

Answer
Yes, I too was and am secretly a couch tater. I get up with a good DVD workout, keep a diary of my good and bad habits- for accountablity, and have a secret body fantasy in mind while I workout.
If you dream it, you can acheive it- corny... hell yes, but it works. Get a picture of someone whose body you admire, and look at it everyday to keep sight of your goals. You can be just as hot with time and determination. It's going to be hard, but that is okay. It really is.

I exercise sporadically (can do a few times a week for a few weeks then go days or weeks without & start the cycle again). I want to exercise almost daily (at least 5 times a week) to get my heart into shape but the excuses keep coming up.
Don't like 2 exercise in public by self (feel embarrassed) and don't know anyone 2 workout with like this, not much room in the house 2 do a lot (but I do exercise 2 fit tv at times), can't do at night when there's a free class at a local church (have other obligations can't get out of), don't have much money for gym membership (which would be the best thing for me I think, especially if it's competitive with encouragement). I live in a country-hick type city where I don't think it would be safe on the streets & there's not much going on exercise wise.
Motivated by 90s+ dance music (when I used to be really into exercise). I like dancing, gymnastics, etc. but there's no room for the kind I like. Are there free/cheap clubs out there? Suggestions?

Answer
Simply buy a home fitness equipment and work on it like 45 min a session every other day.

Your money will be well spent, you just do your aerobics in private...

looking to put on true dual rinehart exhaust on my 07 ultra classic any pros or cons?

bubba

i heard it doesnt give off as much heat with true duals

Answer
That system is a pretty decent performer...BUT....You WILL need to remap the injection with an exhaust change of that degree...a hi-flo air cleaner should also be added if it hasn't aleady been done.
HD's "Stage 1 Download" will NOT be sufficient for this system...you will need the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner and have it DYNO TUNED....

you can email me here through my profile if you ahve any questions...I also have some other recommendations I could make, but not enough room here...

An answer to a similar question..
They guys you were talking to are kind of right. With the pipes you are looking at, the bike really does need to have a hi-flo air cleaner put on. The dramatic decrease in restriction and the short length are the reason. Shorter pipes generally cause a drop in power in the low and mid-range, but can be compensated for somewhat by adding a set of Samson Torque Cones. The air cleaner will be needed to let more air in also to help compensate for the increase in exhaust flow. The Screamin Eagle air cleaner is ok, but the Arlen Ness Big Sucker (get the Stage 2 version) is better and about the same price. The S/E uses a shallow, dry filter material similar to a fiber glass mat, the Big Sucker uses a deeper K&N filter that flows considerably more air than the S/E. The stock HD air cleaner is THE most power restricting part on the bike. If you pull off the cover and look at the element, you will see why...it literally starves the engine for air, the reason for this from the factory...EPA NOISE pollution restrictions.
Now this is the MAJOR factor in the situation....DO NOT let anyone talk you into a Power Commander or Vance & Hines Fuel Pak, or ANY type of "piggy back"....FUEL...module!!!
You want the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner!!!
There are several reasons for this.
1. There is almost no room on a Softail to mount an add-on module, it basically get jammed and stuffed under the seat. "piggy back" modules plug in-line between the bikes computer and the wire harness, they are big and bulky and create extra wiring that is a ***** to mount, route and work around.
2. They do not do anything except control fuel, they have no timing or rev limit adjustments. The Power Commander 5 for 09-up bikes does have an Auto-Tune module that will allow the system to adjust the fuel by itself while you ride...BUT it is an additional couple hundred dollars, and you have to add yet another module to allow for timing adjustments...now you have 2 additional modules to try and figure how and where to mount. All together you will end up having arouns $1000 in modules.

The Screamin Eagle Super Tuner is basically nothing but software that reprograms the stock computer. It is a box that goes between 2 cables that link the bike to a PC. Once the computer is programmed and mapped on the dyno, you unplug it....nothing to mount. DO NOT LOSE THE BOX!!!!....if you do and need further tuning in the future for mods done later, you will have to buy another Tuner. The Tuner, once plugged in to a bike is "married" to that bike only and will not work on any other bikes. The Super Tuner has virtually unlimited tuning capabilites. It will allow for fuel mapping, accelerator pump feature for better throttle response, fully adjustable rev limit (do not rev a Softail past 6200, past that, the balancers spin too fast and can fly apart and destroy the engine), fully adjustable timing advance and curve tables, etc. I was amazed at what this thing can do when I was trained on it.
Having the timing properly set makes all the difference in the world. We tested bikes with stock timing and rev limits that had the fuel dialed in perfect for max power, then loaded in performance timing maps and had gains of 5-15 hp & tq.
And there is one more benefit to the Super Tuner compared to the others....The Tuner is about $400, the same as the others, bt no added expenses from add-on modules...its all built in.

Doing all of this, and having the bike tuned, WILL make it run cooler!!! The Twin Cams run hotter than the older Evo's like Mike has. The reasons are being tuned VERY lean for EPA standards and the Twin Cams use oil jets under the pistons. These jets squirt oil onto the bottom of the piston to help cool it. Stock engines run sooooo lean that they cause excessive heat.....here is the oxymoron....because they are so lean, HD designed the oil jets to cool the pistons....what actually happens is the pistons HEAT the oil!!!....tune the engine, richen it up, and the piston cools down, now, the oil can do its job and cool the piston....double cooling effect. Proper tuning will decreae oil temp by as much as 20-25 degress and promote longer, more reliable engine life...and you will FEEL the power increase.....generally, depending on the bike, combination of pipes and air cleaner, and how good the guy tuning the bike is, you can expect 10-15 hp & tq increase.

Here's a story I hope you'll like,
It's the one about the girl riding on her bike
I know it's a tired old tale but it still rings true
She could never be rude or unkind
But a sad song played on the back of her mind ohh
Can someone show me a different day?
To take me away

Take me out of the woods great big world
You know I'm wanting for you
You know I'm wanting for you

They tell me goodies make the woods go round
And every day they fix the tea to wash 'em down
You know if you spin your wheels everything's ok
There's a girl who's been on my mind
She was never one who ever cared to color in the lines ohh
Did you know that this girl looks alot like me
Ohh

Take me out of the woods great big world
You know I'm wanting for you
You know I'm wanting for you
Wanting for you

I WANT A BIGGER BUTT!?

Ok so ive recently been taking Maca Root pills. I have seen the reviews and side effects and what not some say it works others dont.
supposibly this makes ypur butt bigger? i wonder if it is true? has any one took them before ?? please let me noe thank you.

Answer
The right cardio exercise and weight training activities (like squats
and deadlifts) can make a difference in your backside and help you get
those buns of steel. Find out the best cardio and strength training
exercises for strengthening and firming up your rear.
1. Squats.
Squats are one of the best exercises you can do for your hips, butt
and thighs. Stand with feet hip-width apart and squat, keeping back
straight, abs in and knees behind your toes. Let your butt lightly
touch chair and squeeze butt to stand up. Repeat for 2-3 sets of 8-12
reps and add weights for more intensity.
2. Lunges. Stand in a split
stance, with feet about 3 feet apart. You want both knees to be at
about 90-degree angles at the bottom of the movement, so adjust
accordingly. Hold weights in each hand (or place a barbell behind the
neck) for added intensity. Bend the knees and lower the back knee
toward the floor, keeping the front heel down and the knee directly
over the centre of the foot. Keep the torso straight and abs in as you
push through the front heel and back to starting position. Don't lock
the knees at the top of the movement. Perform 1 to 3 sets of 10 to 16
reps according to your fitness level and goals.
3. Step Ups. For step
ups, you simply place one foot on a step or platform and push through
the heel onto the step. This is an excellent exercise for the glutes.
4. Hip Extensions. Lie on the floor with feet propped on the ball,
legs straight. Keeping abs tight, slowly lift your hips off the floor
(squeezing the buttocks) until body is in a straight line. Hold for a
few seconds and lower, repeating 10 to 15 times.
5. One-Legged Deadlifts. You should skip this exercise if you
have any back problems. To do this move, take the left leg back just a bit, lightly
resting on the toe. With the weights in front of the thighs, tip from
the hips and lower the weights as low as your flexibility allows. Keep
your back flat or with a natural arch and make sure you keep the abs
contracted to protect the back. Squeeze the glutes of the working leg
to raise back up. Do 2-3 sets of 8-12 reps.
6. Hiking. Now the
exercises listed above aren't the only strength moves for the glutes,
but we often forget that there are cardio activities that will also
engage the backside. Hiking is one of those activities and it also
burns tons of calories. Also, walking up an incline automatically gets
your glutes more involved and, if you're wearing a backpack, you're
really getting a workout. A 140-lb person burns about 390 calories in
about an hour!
7. Biking. Riding a bike is great for your heart and it
also targets almost every muscle in your hips, thighs and butt. On a
stationary bike, alternate 3 minutes at 70-80 RPM with 2 minutes at
100-110 RPM for a calorie-blasting 30 minute workout. You can also try
Spinning at the gym or riding outside. Gear up to really work your
glutes! A 140-lb person burns 335 calories in 45 minutes.
8. Running. Running, like walking, is accessible, easy to learn, reduces stress,
helps in weight loss, and it makes you feel good. Plus, it really
works your butt, especially when you add a few hills to your regular
running route. A 140-lb person burns 475 calories during a 45 minute
jog.
9. Kickboxing. Kickboxing was a hot item back in the day, but it's
still a great workout. Controlled kicks work your hips, thighs and
butt while complex combinations that include punches will target your
abs to make them stronger. A 140-lb woman will burn up to 500 calories
with 45 minutes of kickboxing.
10. Walking. Walking is easy: you can do
it anywhere, anytime with no special equipment. There's no learning
curve and it's something you can incorporate all day long. If you walk
up hills, you can really target your glutes and, if you pick up the
intensity, you'll burn some of that extra flab off your buns! A 140-lb
person burns about 300 calories an hour during a brisk walk.

I want to get toned?

johm

I was looking at pictures oif me from a couple summers ago and I was in such great shape. The thing is I didnt work out then and I dont now. I'm not fat at all, just out of shape. My stomach has a little pouch and my dream is to be in amazing shape by summer. Does Pilates work?
if so how often should i do it and can i buy the dvd's at target
im 5'4 110 pounds

Answer
Pilates, like any type of exercise, will work IF you are consistent and dedicated. You are given yourself enough time, so if you practice Pilates regularly, do cardiovascular exercise or at least maintain an active lifestyle, and eat in a healthy manner over the next few months you should be in great shape.

Pilates is a toning exercise. You are working your muscles, increasing strength. Although you do burn calories while doing Pilates, you do not burn as much as you do, say, running or even walking. Additionally, you are not working your heart strong enough for it to count as cardio. That said, by toning your muscles you are doing good things not only for your health and ability to live life to the fullest but you are also ensuring that when you do lose weight you will have shapely muscles that will help you look and feel even better.
By the way, Pilates will help you with your flexibility, an often neglected part of fitness.
A good weight loss program, then, will combine both strength / toning and especially cardio. You want to do strength / cardio 2-3x / week, and make sure you have at least one day of rest each week so your body can recover. Depending upon your goals, you should get at least 30-60 min., maybe even up to 90 min., of cardio activity daily, up to 6x/ week. You don't have to hit the gym daily, but make an effort to include more walking, taking the stairs, etc., in addition to finding physical activities that you enjoy doing. Walking, jogging, or running, even chasing after little ones; aerobics; swimming; kickboxing; spinning or bike riding; dancing; and many other types of activities count as cardio. Breaking exercises up into little chunks throughout your day is just as effective as setting aside large blocks of time, and any sort of activity that gets your heart pumping counts as cardio.

I personally have found that Pilates has helped me tremendously in gaining strength, especially in my core (abs and lower back), improving my posture and flexibility, and pulling in my tummy. I haven't lost much weight, if any, with Pilates; for my body what I eat affects my weight more than anything else, although I need exercise to aid in loss or at least maintenance. I *look* like I weigh a couple of pounds less than I actually do when I am very diligent with my Pilates practice, though.

Yes, you can buy Pilates videos at Target. You'll most likely see some of Winsor Pilates' videos, and you may also find videos by Shape, Leslie Sansone, Prevention, or The Method. (I haven't checked my Target's shelves too recently.) If you're looking for more information on Pilates videos, I highly recommend CollageVideo.com, where you can see previews of the videos they have in stock and read customer reviews; VideoFitness.com, where you can read consumer reviews of a ton of videos and ask questions on their forum; and YourExerciseDVDs.com, where you can read professional reviews of a number of videos.

Should I get a fixed gear bike or a Trek Road bike?

best entry level spinning bike on The Rock-Solid RSTD38 Is A Great Entry Level Indoor Exercise Bike
best entry level spinning bike image

Help

Im trying to decide if I should get a Trek 1.1 road bike or a really nice fixed gear bike. What are the advanteges and disadvanteges.

Answer
To be honest, I would never buy a fixed gear bike if you could help it. It really limits everything you can do with the bike. To name a few of the problems: It only has 1 spinning speed (meaning once you hit a certain speed, it is very uncomfortable to continue pedaling. Think of going down hill in first gear, feels like the chain is off the hook.), you can't tackle hills very well, you can't attain higher coasting speeds for group rides, etc.

My fiance and I both just recently bought Trek 1.1s. (Men's and women's) They are a good entry level bike that won't break the bank, but give you a good feeling of the sport. There are several problems with the Trek 1.1 if you are speaking from an experienced rider standpoint, but you probably couldn't tell me what they were until you knew more. (It is an aluminum fork instead of carbon fiber. A new biker can't really tell the difference. The shifters are on the higher position so you can't change gears down in your more aggressive stance. Again, a new biker probably wouldn't even know you could have gears in your lower stance. Things like that.)

All in all? Trek 1.1 is a good entry level bike. If you are willing to spend a little bit more cash, you should probably get the Trek 1.2. A lot of the things I mentioned above, are "fixed" in the 1.2. However, you are spending maybe an additional $200 to get a carbon frame and better gear shifting positions. If you don't think that is worth it as a newbie? Don't worry about it.

The biggest thing I can tell you, is to get biker shorts. Also, learn how to ride properly before judging the comfort level of the seat. Many people will go out and ride it and say that the seat is garbage, or it is too hard, or that its cheap. They don't understand that road bike seats aren't meant for comfort. The padding is in the shorts, so get a good pair of shorts. Also, when cycling, you need to be in a more forward stance. The weight should be on your arms and legs, not on your tailbone/butt. Also, of course you will just have to get used to it. Your butt will be sore for a bit until you get used to it.

Hope this helps.

I have a couple questions about getting a fixed gear bike?

I Wish I W

question 1) if i do decide to put a hand brake on my bike, if im not mistaken that makes it impossible to do bar spins after someone does that yes?

question 2) I live in ohio in a city area so its pretty flat, but we also have our fair share of hills, would you recommend a fixed gear bike for this type of geography?

Answer
1) Yes...a front brake will make it impossible to do bar spins.

2) "...would you recommend a fixed gear bike for this type of geography?" Nope. Even if the terrain around you was perfectly flat, I still wouldn't recommend a fixed gear. You can't start quickly. You can't stop quickly. And Lord help you riding into a stiff headwind.

Fixed gear bikes belong on a Velodrome track. Most of them are indoor tracks, away from the wind, hills, traffic & any need to start or stop quickly. Besides...a "good" fixed gear bike can cost just as much or MORE than an entry level road bike. Links below. Try not to get sticker shock at the prices. Especially the one from Specialized. This is a true "track bike".
