Three months ago I bought a Schwinn Spinner Pro spinning bike on Craiglist. I enjoyed it for about 2 months before it started making very loud clicking sounds when I pedal it.

Does anyone know what the problem could be -- and how I can fix it?

If not, who would be able to fix it? Since I bought it used, I don't have any repair or service information. (I live in the Chicago area now.)

Answer
Any bike shop should be able to fix it for you. The other guy that posted does not realize this is an exercise bike and not a normal bike so it doesn't have derailleurs . If i had to guess id say the problem is with the crank.

What are some ways to change bad habits?

Olive Cray

I just purchased a New in home Spin bike and I dont want it to become a new piece of furniture....I want to use it and continue to use it, but I am a serious couch potatoe...DVD's and the remote is what I'm used to....How can I get up?
Is it possible to gain new habits...purposly?

Answer
Yes, I too was and am secretly a couch tater. I get up with a good DVD workout, keep a diary of my good and bad habits- for accountablity, and have a secret body fantasy in mind while I workout.
If you dream it, you can acheive it- corny... hell yes, but it works. Get a picture of someone whose body you admire, and look at it everyday to keep sight of your goals. You can be just as hot with time and determination. It's going to be hard, but that is okay. It really is.

best position on a spinning bike image

mmmonfredi

I feel like I am only working my quads and would like to concentrate on my glutes and hamstrings a little more. Any ideas or positions to ride in?

Answer
If you can put clipless pedals on those spin bikes you can focus on pulling up on the pedals and that would work your hamstrings more. The downward push would naturally work your glutes. The upward pull would work your hamstrings. If you got off the saddle and started pedaling as if you were sprinting or going up a steep incline then you would definitely work your glutes more.

P.S. I am a cyclist and I dont ride for the exercise. Asking questions like this only makes you look frivolous. Ofcourse riding a bike is good exercise but I do it for the relaxation, being outdoors, and ultimately to become a better cyclist. I dont do it to work my hamstrings, glutes or quads. The fact that you would even ask this question is just plain annoying. You are a gym-goer. A frivolous person wrapped up in his/her own vanity. A true cyclist would not ride for this reason.

How hard is it to complete 75 mile bike ride?

JRSmith

My friends ask me to ride 75 mile bike ride and I haven't rode a bike any significant distance in years. Is this something I should even attempt or do you have to work yourself up to something like this. I'm 41 years old so I'm not a spring chicken but I'm not a coach potato. My friend is like 58 years old in great shape and he does this every year. Just wondering if I have what it takes to finish.

Answer
When is this 75 mile ride coming up? If it's within the next month or two...forget it. Try again next year. You're going to need some serious training. So much to learn. Two biggest problems most newbies have is saddle height & cadence.

Your legs should extend to the point where there is a slight bend in the knee at the 6 o'clock position. The ball of the foot should be on the center of the pedal. If anything more than a slight bend...raise the saddle.

A good pair of toe-clip pedals or Shimano SPD pedals with those special shoes would be extremely helpful. This will give you power on the up-stroke & the down-stroke. Beware...you'll be using muscle groups rarely used & may wind up getting a 'Charley Horse' or two, or three.

Read up on 'spinning' vs. 'pushing' or mashing on the pedals in too high of a gear. Shoot for a cadence between 70 to 90 rpm at all times. Raise the cadence level even more for hill climbing, but probably in a lower gear or gears. The faster you can 'spin', the easier it is to pedal.

Good stuff from the late Sheldon Brown & Bicycling.com on the links.

Any input would be great. I have a Kenmore Model # 27612 the 600 series. Serial # CU0445122 bought in early 2007 from sears. Warranty has expired. It doesn't work in the spin cycle. Here is what I have checked so far- the agitator does move, the water fills and empties, not off balance, and the lid switch was taken out and tested to work correctly. Any suggestions on were I can go from here? Thanks!

Answer
~*~ Try calling sears and asking if you can buy the extended warranty. That is what I did quite a while after the initial one year ran out and then after I bought it I called for service and the repair more than paid for the cost fo the 1 year extended warranty.

why does my washing machine stop on spin cycle?

myshell_ri

my washing machines spin cycle isn't working all the cycles work up to that point then it stops working and the water is just sitting in it?

Answer
Your lid switch is defective. If you can, unplug the washer, pop the top up, disconnect the two wires going to the lid switch and and tape the two brass contacts together. This is just a safety device so kids don't mess around with the washer while it is spinning. If you do have kids, make sure they don't get hurt before you go buy another switch to replace the broken one.

You may have to pop two clips and disconnect a white mullion connector that is underneath the console, if it is a newer machine. Good luck.

How many calories do you burn on a bicycle ride?

best spinning bike with power meter on uhren-schmuck-shops.de in den Startlchern! Nicht nur fr Kino-Fans ...
best spinning bike with power meter image

The Oracle

I am amazed at the controversy over this, wondering what others think. Crank power output meters only measure power at the crank, and do not consider a persons metabolic calorie burn (calories burnt running the body). I have a Forrunner 305 and have run it side by side with a crank power meter, and low and behold, when you add in the metabolic rate - they almost match.

Heart rate is affected by many things, but most importantly - hydration. You could get a faulty reading (high) from being under hydrated - Rule of thumb - one pinch of unrefined sea salt for every 16oz of clear water you drink (You'd be surprised how this will lower you blood pressure and heart rate - that's right - lower). You should drink in oz's 1/2 of your body weight a day (180lb person = 90oz of clear water a day - don't forget the sea salt as water by itself is a diuretic).

Any thoughts?

Sources - Years of spinning, biking and a book titled "Your Body's Many Cries For Water."

Answer
As a rule your body is only 25% effective in power output most of the calories you burn are in the form of heat, so what ever the power meter reports is not the total calories burnt, a conversion to K-Joules is a better measure of the calories used.(1 cal. = 4kj)
This site is fairly accurate, with in reason.

Fzr 600 voltage problem or something?

Charlie Ha

My 1992 fzr 600 has trouble with the battery or something. The battery is brand new and it dosent seem like I'm getting enough cranking power, what happens is in the morning or after the bike sits about 8 hours or so after running, it will turn over slower than it should and it dosent seem like its getting enough juice. So if I hook it to a charger it spins it over quick and dosent take but one or two rotations to fire right up. After you go to town or run the bike for 5 mins it spins the motor over fast and fires right up. I'm positive my problem lies there now and not in the valves or carbs. I went through the valves and found one tight one and I fixed that. And it helped it some but not all the way so any advice helps thanks.

Answer
Something is either draining your battery , like a direct short or faulty switch.
or
something is not charging your battery like a failed VR or stator
You can test with a cheap multi meter and google, its fun and easy

Which bike is better for weight loss?

best spinning bike for short people on Replace Annoying Political Facebook Posts with Sexy EyeHandy Girls
best spinning bike for short people image

Serendipit

I am interested in losing a little weight and toning up a bit, but I don't want a short term thing. I was ready to buy a recumbent bike to work out indoors because it is getting cooler and i won't have an excuse not to use it. Although I saw on biggest loser the trainer said to get a spin bike. I am not sure what that is but he said that it is the best workout u can get? Any suggestions for me? I am strictly asking about the bikes. I already know about diet.

Answer
The one you continue to use is the best one. Real cyclists all use a regular outdoor bike on a trainer (see links below). The least expensive trainers, like I use, are less than $100 (minus bike). The benefit is that once you take the bike off, they take up hardly any space, and when you're riding, it feels the same as your regular bike, because it IS your regular bike.

If money is no object, Computrainer is the gold standard. It interfaces with your computer, (and HRM or Powertap if you have them), allowing you to ride various virtual courses, or even race friends on the internet.

Spin bikes are a specialized contraption used in spin classes. Spin classes can be a fun diversion, but I wouldn't bother with one of those for home use.

What are some cons to getting a full suspension bike?

Lipiew

I'm torn between getting just a front suspension bike or a full. I heard the rear suspension takes away from the pedal power but is more comfortable? Does it really and is it noticable?

Answer
If you buy a good full suspension design that has a "platform" rear shock, you won't lose much efficiency at all......and if you tune it properly, it can be darn close to riding a hardtail. Not totally, but only the really cruddy designs tend to bounce when you pedal. And if you pedal properly, it won't be an issue most of the time anyway, as long as you tune the shock correctly. In addition, any little squishing that you get when you pedal under power can be a benefit when you're climbing up steep, loose terrain.....it helps to dig the rear wheel in for more traction, while a hardtail will just spin out and probably cause you to stall unless you have very good climbing skills. The only other disadvantages to full suspension are the need to maintain the linkage and bolts holding it all together...more maintenance and higher costs when you need parts. And they usually add a little bit of weight to the bike, but not much unless you get into the long-travel bikes. The benefits of full suspension really outweigh the disadvantages, especially with today's bikes that are MUCH better than ones from several years ago.

Hardtails are really fun on most trails as long as you have some decent handling skills and are physically fit. Otherwise, they can bounce you around and either tire you out a lot faster or make you very sore in your back. In really rocky or rooty terrain, they can buck you right off the bike if you aren't careful and skilled. But they're fun and zippy and simple, all of which are nice. Hardtails also excel at jumping....when you see some of these riders launching ramps and bunnyhopping full suspension bikes, they deserve your respect! Full suspension is better for drops over a few feet, but for taking jumps with ramps, hardtails rule. If you run some 2.25 or larger tires on a hardtail, you can get a little bit of cushion to soften the ride. Put a set of 2.4 tires at 35psi and you'll almost feel like you're on full suspension unless it's really rough.

My advice would be to try your best to ride any full suspension bikes you're considering.....ride them on an actual trail if at all possible. Sometimes people will let you ride their bikes at the trailhead, or swap bikes with you for a short stretch.....ask around. This is a great way to get to know different bike designs and get a feel for what you really like before you start shopping.

Hope this helps you out some.....good luck! :o)

Its a skyjet 50cc scooter and i can't find parts for it anywhere! There are problems like when i start it the wheel starts spinning quite fast without me pulling the throttle and it struggles to get up some hills at 15mph? It's a 4 stroke but its just horribly slow. Please help! :(

Answer
Japan, or wherever you bought that junk. Your best bet is to check out any bike dealers in your area and ask them. I can`t find anything in North America only the UK. Make sure your idle is not set to high as that will engage the clutch. If that thing has a centrifugal clutch then most small engine shops will be able to help you. It`s probably the same as a go kart clutch. I cant find a parts manual for it to see. If you have a picture of the clutch I can probably find something for you .

Q. ok, if i jump rope for 5 minutes a day, each healthy ----- no junk food. and have gym class every other day, FOR 5 MONTHS, will i be ready for swimsuit season....i have a belly (NOT HUGE) but annoying that i need to get rid of, and my thighs need toning......do you think i'll be ready if i do this?
jump roping also works out your whole body too.....my gym class is 90 minutes.

Answer
I agree with the poster who said "Crunches don't get rid of belly fat, they get stronger abs. You will need to do cardio if you want to lose weight."

First you don't need to lose weight to slim down. What you want to do is reshape your body so that you have more muscles and less belly fat. It's is not a question of losing weight but replacing the fat on your middle with muscles else where on your body.

You can't choose where fat will be reduced. You can't target fat. You can choose which muscles to build. Targeting which muscles you build is very easy, you just use them !!

To lose weight you need to build up your bodies need to burn energy every day. You need to increase your metabolic rate.

The best way to do that is to build your muscles and the most important muscles are your lungs and your heart muscle.
This is why people talk about doing cardio workouts. Workouts that exercise the heart and lungs for a period of time. That means running, spinning, biking etc.

You should start doing cardio it in short blocks of 5 minutes with a couple of minutes to recover and then another 5, recover, another 5 and so on.

Try to build up to the point where you are doing 45 to an hour. Then as you get fitter and recover faster, cut back on the recovery breaks.

5 minutes of high intensity jump rope is the wrong start. You can still do it, but you need to work on lower intensity and longer duration: Endurance.

To help you get the intensity and duration better balanced you may want to invest in a heart rate monitor, (and good running shoes). Get one with programmable zones and upper and lower alarms.

In the first few months rate your progress by your increased endurance.

Seek the advice and help of a school coach or personal trainer from a gym. Get them to help build you a personal exercise plan, and then review and expand it every month based on your progress.

Try finding the various running clubs in your town. Most offer free advice and free or very low cost training.

You already know what to do with food. Eat regularly at least three times a day. Eat lots of green and leafy stuff, (not lettuce) and lots of other veg and fruits.

Cut back on all junk food, fried food. No sodas or so called energy drinks like red bull. You can use a little gator-aid for workouts that last more than 40 minutes. (Both during and after.)

Try to eat some protein after long hard workouts, preferably within 30 minutes.

Add pliaties to help strengthen your core.

Keep a log of your workouts and your progress.

I just boutgh the motobecane immortal force and Im wondering how it is, if you bought another motobecane online Im also currious how it its plus which one you got. I would really appreciate it

Answer
I didn't but two friends of mine bought Motos. A Fly Pro and a Le Champion. Both are extremely happy with their bikes. I got to take both for a spin and thought they were very good bikes and spec'ed better than any bike for the price.

The Le champion was one size too big for me but still felt good and had very similar characteristics to my Cannondale which I love. Stiff frame and tracked true. The AC 420 wheels are great. The 10 Ultergra shifted better than my 9 speed. It came with Kenda tires, they do the job but aren't my favorite tire. The Fly Pro has an awesome flat black paint job. Came with super light Kenda's with small knobs, not good for muddy or very loose conditions but fast. Both these bikes are crazy light as well. If I didn't have my bikes I'd buy both.

Does anyone use the Giant Cypress XL to commute to work every day?

And if so can you give me a review of the bike?... Im about to spend 400.00 on it and I'd like to make sure that It will be a comfortable ride for 15 miles each way to work and back. thanks

Answer
Giant makes good bikes. If you are traveling on a smooth road most of the time a hybrid bike without shocks will be a little more efficient and liter, the disk brakes are not really needed. It's an LX.

Take it for a spin and then look at other manufactures bikes of the same type. It's always a good idea to look at Giant first so you have something to compare the others to.

Taking Spinning Class. Need advice on stretching, nutrition, and more!?

best spin bike seat cushion on ... and have the all-important bike pad along with stronger thigh grips
best spin bike seat cushion image

C F

Starting to take spinning class. Need tips on stretching, nutrition, and more!?
I'm going to be starting a spin class, kinda lightly at this point. An hour every Wednesday and every other Sunday for about a month. Then I'll throw in Mondays.

But I had a half an hour class Tuesday and I'm STILL sore. I realized after the fact I really didn't stretch. But I don't know how or how many times to repeat a stretch. Are there some things you all could suggest?

Also, I have no idea what I should be eating (or when) to keep my body fit. I want to make sure I'm at least getting the proper nutrition before and after the workout.

Also, what are somethings I can do in between classes to keep those muscles ready? The reason for my taking the class so infrequently to start is because of scheduling conflicts. So I can't take more classes than that for now. But I do have access to a gym almost every day. I will be taking some workout aerobic/cardio type classes but I don't know if it works the same muscles.

Also, what are some good bike shorts that will protect me from the saddle. Two days later and my butt still hurts. I'm a college student so I'm kinda on a budget. But I'm kinda ok with spending up to around $50 or so if it's a REALLY good pair of shorts that will last. But cheaper the better as long as they do the trick.

Answer
I've been spinning for over 3 years now, so i know what you talk about!

1. Your tush will be sore for at least a week, and although gel seat pads or cushions may help, it won't be worth spending money on. That goes for cycling shorts, too (the ones that have gel inserts), so just tough it up, after a week your body will get used to it.
2. The thigh/calf/shoulder or buttock pain will still be noticeable, so you must always stretch and warm up AND cool down.
3. Specific stretch exercises for spinning should be done on the bike, as follows,

Hamstrings
1. Place one foot on the bike between
the handlebars and the seat and find a
position where your balance on your
supporting leg is stable.
2. Slightly bend your supporting leg.
3. Square your hips so both hip bones
âfaceâ forward.
4. As you exhale, bend forward from
your hips and bring your straight
torso toward your straight leg.
5. Relax and breathe as you stretch.
Switch legs after 30-60 seco

Quads
1. Hold onto the bike with one hand,
using the bike for balance.
2. Grasp the top of your foot or ankle
with your free hand and bring your
heel as close to the buttocks as possible.
3. As you exhale, pull your abdominals
in and tuck your hips underneath you
4. Hold the stretch and breathe. Switch
legs after 30-60 seconds.

Calves
1. Standing directly behind the bike, place the sole of one foot against the bottom of the frame, heel down.
2. Stand erect and lean slightly into the
bike until you feel a stretch in your
calf muscles.
3. Hold the stretch and breathe. Switch
legs after 30â60 seconds.

Glutes
1. Stand facing the bike about 2-3 feet
away and place a hand on handlebar
for stability.
2. Stand on one leg and rest the other
foot above the knee of your standing leg.
3. Flex the knee of your standing leg
and allow your hips to sink back.
4. Feel the stretch in the glutes area of
the crossed leg.
5. Hold the stretch and breathe for 30-60 seconds.

Do these before and after class. Also, a spinning class takes 45 minutes, when you finish, pedal slowly for 5 minutes and then cool down.

Do not eat anything before spin class. Most people get nauseous even after a banana or apple. Do not eat for at least an hour after class, to help your body utilize your reserve carbs before eating again.
You do not need a complex diet, have 5 small meals a day (divide your normal food for a day among 5 smaller meals) and try to keep a balance between carbs, fats and proteins ( 40-45% carbohydrates or carbs, 25-30% protein and 30-35% fat each day).

Aerobics, swimming, elliptical machine or jogging are compatible with spinning. If you are doing weight training, too, do it on days you are not spinning to prevent muscle exhaustion.

Take it slow, be patient, and you'll get amazed by the change in your health and body. Welcome to the spinning world!

Tight Hamstrings- Is my saddle too high?

atomicdoug

I've been racing bikes on and off since the early 90s. Lately I notice during extended pacline riding that my hamstrings get tight, to the point where its uncomfortable. Is there a way I can adjust my saddle position to put more load on my quads and less on the hamstrings? I am pushing down too much on the pedals vs spinning? I set my saddle height using Lemond's formula.

Answer
I'll bet your problem has more to do with overdevelopment of your quads, possibly in combination with a lack of stretching to help keep your hams loose. This is really common in cyclists. A stretching program is the best thing you can do...either some basic exercises or yoga classes.

Cycling positions just naturally produce an imbalance in your leg muscles. Strong quads and tight hams are the norm for frequent riders. If it gets pronounced enough, it can create knee stability problems and even backaches.

If your saddle height is correct according to Greg's .883 formula, then you should be ok. Lowering your saddle will only make the problem worse, and raising it may have no effect or it could start to cause you knee or achilles problems if it's too high. I'd start with gentle but frequent stretching and maybe consider talking to an experienced sports trainer or rehab specialist if you're really having troubles.

Hope this helps some...

Indoor Cycling Spin bikes?

KT

I'm looking to purchase an indoor spin bike. Unfortunately, I know nothing about what brands or features to investigate! I am 5'0 so I'm also concerned with buying something that will adjust well to my size. Any advice would be great! =)

Answer
Some bicycle and sporting goods stores sell stationary (indoor) bicycles. You can also buy them online. Shop around carefully because there are important differences between a LeMond RevMaster, a Schwinn stationary bike, a Spinner (tm) bike, and a Keiser M3. Most stationary bikes do adjust to fit people between approximately 5' and 6'3".

Contact the manufacturers to see if they can refer you to a local fitness center that has their bikes. Then you can go test them. Otherwise, try to find them at a store and take a test ride. This is important because you don't want to be stuck with a bike you dislike or makes you uncomfortable!

See if you can get any free DVDs or training. Is there any support if the bike breaks or needs maintenance? How will you learn to set up the bike properly, to ride with proper form, to exercise safely and to train appropriately?

You can also buy a a trainer, a frame that holds a regular bicycle still while you ride it. These are readily available at bike and sports shops too. I would definitely visit a local bike shop to discuss options involving trainers.

I have one of those spinning bikes or stationary bike, I'm not sure which on it is. But i go on that for at least 30mins & it says I'm burning 300 calories, what other exercises are there to burn fat fast & gain muscle. Especially belly fat

Answer
Drink lot of water 6 - 7 litres daily.
Try hoola hooping, it helps a lot.
These are certain yoga postures, try them.

How many minutes should you cycle a day to lose weight?

Ciara

I just got a spinning bike and i have decided to lose weight again. I rode today and I rode for 45 minutes with no problem. (How many times a week and how long each time should I cycle to lose weight?) I need to lose around 100 pounds. I will be eating healthy and drinking water too.

oh have i got the thing for you, MEGA-T pills i bought mine at walmart. the help straighten your system out so your body loses the weight it should. i swear by them i use them and i also have a 100 lbs. to lose:(...i done got so big it is hard to walk and get all the exrecise i need.i just hurt all over. well i took these pills, my scales are broke so i went by my measuring tape. one of those sewing ones. measured my stomach at its biggest point. then started the pills. 3 days later someone said i just seen you the other day, but now you have lost some weight what did u do. i forgot about the pills i said nothing.just thought they were messing with me.when i got home i remembered i was taking the pills so i measured myself again. i had lost 43 inches off my stomach in 4 days.it really freaked me out..well i took 2 a day one at 6am and 1 pill at 3pm cause i didn't want to be up all night if thats what these pills would do. you never know.i was fine. had to stay close to the bathroom for 3 days. but after that everything calmed down.my waist started at 52 inches. i am now at 46 inchs. i ram out of the pills a week after i started them,my husband and i was both taking them. so i said i want to see how fast i gain it back. i haven't. it has been 3 weeks since i ran out. and yes i plan on getting me some more this week.with those and exercise you will lose a lot of weight but dont take more than they recommend please. and read up on the stuff in the pills.i even had pitting in my legs and ankels, and it took all my water retention out. i feel great.and i am ready t feel better.so mega-t green tea pills.i think i paid 6.97 for mine.and the exercise bike. the more you speed your heart rate up for a few minutes then let it go back down, then up again. will help your metabolisim. also you can try niacin. that is suppose to help your matabolisim, but becareful. just one pill. cause you always want to just start slow with something new. see how your body does. good luck. sorry so long.
