What is the best, bang for my buck, spinning bike, for my home?

gomundo

Answer
A regular road bike on a training stand. Say a mid range used model.

Not only is it lower total cost, but it's a better cycling simulator - real bike, adjusted exactly to your fit.

It's what the pros use....

my bike: http://www.toysrus.co.uk/Toys-R-Us/Bikes-and-Rideons/Bikes/Mens/26-Celius-Bike%280071887%29
very urgent, could you label where i have to LOOSEN it up, its too tight!
! thankyou

Answer
You will need to play with the rear shock and find the right setting. Your bike manual should explain how to do this. It appears you have a spring rear shock that you can turn to length or shorten the spring which will cause the shock to change the rate at which it compresses. From what I could tell from the picture just spin the the shock at the top of the spring and then try riding the back to see the response produced.

Ok now, what I want help from you people is basically that does this exercise bike require batteries to operate(work)or can I plug it into mains and use it??
I really do not want to be wasting loads of money on additional batteries to run the bike,so hopefully I can plug it into the mains and it will work.I really want it to run on a mains connection but I dont know if it does?So please help me out guys!?
Especially if your a current or previous exercise bike owner please inform me and answer this question and tell me if this particular bike needs batteries or mains connection?
Do all bikes generally run on mains connection or batteries??
Please answer,thanks in advance.

Answer
The bike uses magnetic resistance which is generated by spinning a aluminum disk in front of a ring of magnets. You are generating the power to spin the disk so no motor is required. The computer requires a battery but the power drain is so small that it should last a very long time. These are like the cyclocomputers on a bicycle they only use power when you are using it. More likely then not you will in very good shape before you have to worry about replacing the battery.

Spin bike routine questions?

Nuggs

i just got a spin bike for home use and i was wondering how many times a week i should use it. if each time i use it for 45-60 mins?

Answer
As often as you can, as hard as you can, as long as you can.
It depends on what your overall fitness goal is.
If you're just looking to burn calories, then the more you do it, the more calories you burn, the more weight you lose.
If you're looking to replace road riding and build up endurance, then it's probably better to do it as long as you can before you get winded. But personally, I don't think this is really effective, because there is no way I'm going to sit on a spin trainer for 2-3 hours straight.
If you're looking to stress your legs and increase muscle mass, then doing some all out intervals for 40-60 minutes 3-4 times a week should be good. In this case, you should feel some significant soreness the following day afterwards. Otherwise, you're not going to stress your muscles enough to encourage growth.

what is a spin class?

greenfrogs

Is it just riding a stationary bike with other people?

Answer
Imagine a whole bunch of exercise bikes lined up inside a health club studio. Riders are on each one, spinning the pedals at a rapid pace. The lights are turned down, pumped up music fills the air and an instructor with a headset sits atop a lead bike, calling out commands.

Spinning classes are done in a fitness studio, with various light and music settings to create an energized atmosphere.

Instructors guide participants through workout phases. Warm-up, steady uptempo cadences, sprints, climbs, cool-downs, etc.

You control resistance on your bike to make the pedaling as easy or difficult as you choose. Constant adjustment is normal.

All you'll need is workout clothes, a towel (to wipe your face) and a water bottle.
Spinning bikes have toe clips so you can wear tennis shoes. But many pedals also work with Shimano-style SPD cleats.

has anybody heard of spinning aerobics? i went to a gym today to look around and was told about spin class where you are on a bike and it measures your heart rate and the instructor will tell you different times throught out the workout, to speed it up to get your hear rate going and them slow down. it does not sound healthy to me? i am trying to lose weight on my midsection. it is flabby since having my son 6 months ago
can u lose weight by just doing spinning class 2x a week?

Answer
i go to spinning class three times a week and i LOVE it!! It's great - keeps you moving and you burn a lot of calories while cycling to good music. You are motivated since the instructor is constantly encouraging you to keep going. And no, I don't think its unhealthy

I like it much better than running or any other cardio. Highly recommend it!

Bike shorts for spinning class?

out of you

I bought my first pair of proper bike shorts for cycling/spinning class. Im a noob at this. They are a Netti Brand. I was told they are a good brand and will do the job well by the store salesman. Has anyone else heard of this brand do they have a reputable name? I paid $70AU for them which I thought was quite expensive.

Answer
$70AU for a pair of bicycle shorts is actually not that expensive. Have a look around at some bike shops & you'll see some brands which can cost over $100!

For those unfamilar with the brand, it's an Australian company http://www.netti.com.au/Home/default.aspx

I have 4 pairs of Netti brand shorts. As well as 2 short-sleeve tops, 2 light-weight long-sleeve tops, 1 winter top, a rain jacket, leg warmers & gloves - all from Netti.
And some of my cycling friends also choose to wear Netti gear.

From personal experience, I find Netti's clothes to be reasonably priced, comfortable & quite durable.

Some of my outfits were brought on sale, so do keep a look out in the future at any bike shops or Rebel sports stores, for any reduced priced bike gear.

how do i get electric bike to spin the chain?

csmuch41

i wanted to make an electric bike but i dont know how to make the chain spin... how does it work?

does electricity and battery make it spin or what how does this all work?

Answer
You are right. An electric motor and battery are what is needed.

But most electric motors are either direct drive in the rear hub OR there is a roller that drives the front wheel directly. With your level of expertise I'd recommend getting a kit. Australia do some good ones.

Questions about BMX bikes!!!!!!!??????

the_fall_o

i have alot of questions regarding the assembly and parts required for a new bmx bike. if you REALLY know what you are talking about please help me throught email or something:D
im desperate!

Answer
I ride Flatland BMX, and I'm constantly messing with my bike. If you give me some contact details, I can help you out.
I'm in Australia, by the way, so maybe I can answer your questions on MSN messenger, or something..??

Alternatively, here's a link to a forum on PedalBMX, the 'Tech/Repair/Parts' section, a website for riders, by riders... it has a lot of F.A.Q.'s on repair and maintenance.

http://www.pedalbmx.com/forums/view/17:tech-repair-parts

Most people usually have trouble with Bottom brackets (where the crank arms attatch to the bike), headsets, gyro's(what makes the bars able to spin without tangling in the brake cables), and even lacing spokes to rims and hubs.
It's all easy peasy to me, so feel free to contact me or give me your details and I'll show u how.

You know what? I'll fly across the world, come to ur house, and put ur bike together for you. After that, I'll clean your house, wash your car, then walk your dog, in an effort to out-do all the other answers to your question. lol
Not really, but at least it made me seem extra helpful. :) lol

What should I get/ do to become a mountain bike racer?

pokerspade

I am an average novice bike rider. I want to know what I need to do to start training and eventually compete in mountain bike races. What kind of training and diet regiment should I follow? What kind of bike and helmet should I get? How do I even get into a race? I am looking for anyone who has experience in the sport who might be able to help an upstart wannabe racer make his dreams come true.

Answer
First off, I am sure you have a bike. But I am sure it's not 1. Fitted to you 2. Tuned 3. Has proper Components. If you want to race this summer the good news is you don't even need a bike right now. You need to be in the Gym 3-4 days a week taking Spinning classes, weight lifting on both legs and upper body and following a nutrition plan to skinny you up (yes Skinny riders are normally the fastest).

Bike, Ok so your now on your way to getting fit. That's good. But to race you need the right bike. Go to your best Local bike shop (check MTBR.com for review). And tell them your story, they will either outfit you with a better set up or take what you have and get it ready for racing..

Riding: MTB is not just about fitness or gear. But a lot about heart and finesse. I would find out from the shop were the last year races were, maybe there was a series that toured around your state. Then as soon as the weather is nice get out there and ride as much as you can, forget the Gym and just ride. It's a lot different then being on a stationary bike.

Once your comfy on the bike and all the trails (this is not as easy as you think). Make some friends that ride, again your shop is a good resource. and look into a good beginner race. This will get your feet wet with how it's done.

After you have raced a little the rest falls into place.. Good luck.

I want to purchase a bike for street riding and general exercise. Any recommendations on make/model?

robel

Answer
Depending on your budget, you can go to a bike shop and get measured for a proper frame, or you could simply buy a used bike on craigslist and wing it.

Either way, know what riding style (forward/straight up/reclined) you'd enjoy most. Take things for spin from shops - they'll let you if you tell them you're in the market.

We have several bikes at home here, and I like to ride way forward (head almost above the handlebars) while some friends like a little more upright riding.

For a complete review of all types of bikes for the average commuter, see link.

How 2 keep the habit? & What cardio exercises do you like? Why?

deva s

I exercise sporadically (can do a few times a week for a few weeks then go days or weeks without & start the cycle again). I want to exercise almost daily (at least 5 times a week) to get my heart into shape but the excuses keep coming up.
Don't like 2 exercise in public by self (feel embarrassed) and don't know anyone 2 workout with like this, not much room in the house 2 do a lot (but I do exercise 2 fit tv at times), can't do at night when there's a free class at a local church (have other obligations can't get out of), don't have much money for gym membership (which would be the best thing for me I think, especially if it's competitive with encouragement). I live in a country-hick type city where I don't think it would be safe on the streets & there's not much going on exercise wise.
Motivated by 90s+ dance music (when I used to be really into exercise). I like dancing, gymnastics, etc. but there's no room for the kind I like. Are there free/cheap clubs out there? Suggestions?

Answer
Simply buy a home fitness equipment and work on it like 45 min a session every other day.

Your money will be well spent, you just do your aerobics in private...

Just pick the one you like. I like the stepper and rowing machine myself, if they are not available, I run on the treadmill in the gym. (if you get one of those machines, you will not have to face the same problem - to line up in the gym LOL) How to keep the habit? If you do it regularly, it becomes a habit, if it's a habit, you don't have to keep it, habits are hard to break otherwise it's not called a habit... LOL

If you feel monotonous on those machines, let me introduce to you the...

There is also a girls website that talks about aerobic choices as well, hope you are interested:

"AEROBIC CHOICES

Aerobic classes (alternatively, dance to a DVD)
Biking (outdoors... not your cup of tea)
Biking (indoors, also called spinning)
Dancing (even to the radio!)
Jogging (outside or on the treadmill, or brisk walking)
Stairmaster (or running up and down stairs but make sure the stairs are "safe" for this purpose)
Running (outside or on the treadmill)
Rowing (indoor or on the river)
Skipping (jumping rope) â¦

...and there are many others... just be sure to start slowly and work your goal up to 20-30 minutes 3 days a week [it is necessary to keep your heart rate up, which helps burn stored fat] each day for whatever exercise you choose. In order to get the most benefit and the most fat loss, it is important to keep up the activity for at least 20-30 minutes

AND keep your heart rate up...REMEMBER YOUR TARGET HEART RATE IS 220 [minus] (Your Age) = Target Heart Rate [This number is the highest rate your heart should beat per minute during intense exercise...

However, you should try to keep your heart rate around 70-80% of that number during the whole workout]...

â¦you can do it, just give yourself some time. It does take time! Make sure you keep your diet in check too!"

Ryan has something to say about 10 good reasons not to quit your exercise:

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/topshal.htm

...if your situation changed and allowed you to join a gym, it would be much easier for you to keep the habit as you said. It's not cheap or easy to run a gym, if there is anything free or cheap, they may be very small or located in remote areas, or with very few facilities and unattended (no instructors)... how about morning classes? I meet with my students early in the morning in order not to interfere with their daily routine.

does anyone know how can i lose 10 to 15 pounds in a month?

shorty

okay am 22 years old 5'1'' and weight 153 am like 20 pounds over weight i've been trying to lose weight for the past 2 months i've also been drinking green tea but it doesn't work.

Answer
You need to watch your carbs. Look at the nutrition lables on the foods you eat. You need to eat small meals with snacks. Lots of fruits and vegies and lean meats. Stay away from fast food and processed food. East wheat bread instead of white and eat brown rice instead of white rice. Avoid foods high in starch as these turn to sugar (i.e. potatoes, corn).

Also, you need to workout at least 30 minutes a day. I ride my spin bike for 30 minutes each day. You will also firm up doing this. It burns more calories than walking. Just turn on the tv and ride. Keep in mind that muscle weighs about 3 times more than fat - so if you build muscle you may not lose weight on the scale, but you will lose inches.

Another great exercise which is acually noted as being the second best exercise for you is called Rebounding (exercising on a mini trampoline). Swimming is the best exercise. Walmart has a mini tramp for about $30.00 with a DVD. I bought one.

Good luck!
