Spinning bikes? Better? Worse?

I'm looking into getting a spinning bike but I'm really lost as to which one to get. The main brands that I'm looking at are revmaster, which I think is ou of my league pricewise. The schwinn, not much better in terms of money but I've actually heard of them. And then the mad dogg brand original spinner bikes, which vary in price but since I've heard that they coined the name spinning I assume they have something more going on there. I'm leanin towards the spinning brand because they have some lower priced bikes but I intend to not just sit but do the harder rides sk I'm looking for one that is sturdy and can take the harder workouts. Please give your opinion if you actually have or have used a spinning bike not just where I should be looking. Thanks!

Spinning is trademarked because of the type of training that the instructors must go through in order to teach the classes, it really doesn't have anything to do with the equipment, it is just a brand name. I taught classes on Schwinn's and Lemond's for 5 years and didn't have any real problems with either of them. I would say that the Lemond's were a little higher quality and included cadence monitors. I read in a magazine that Lance was coming out with a spinning bike. I haven't heard any reviews, but it looks interesting. Below is the link. Also, one of my favorite indoor rides has always been on Cycleops (link below) They are ultra smooth and sturdy for out of the saddle sprints. I don't have as much experience with "Spinning" bikes because I never spent the money to get certified, but I've heard that it's no different than Schwinn and AGS certifications.

How do I train for a triathlon, especially the swimming and biking parts? I've never been a competitive swimmer or biker before. If I'm gonna be doing a sprint triathlon this summer, what should I do for the swimming? and biking, what kind of bike will I need to get (I don't have one I can really use, and not looking to spend a stupid amount of money on a bike...) and what kind of workouts should I do for that? Thanks

You'll want to start with a novice or sprint triathlon - and maybe think about investing in some swimming lessons as this is often quite an overlooked discipline in triathlons. A good swimming technique will save you a lot of energy and help you to increase your speed and endurance.

I've linked you a site below with lots of reviews on biking equipment etc. that you can get set up with - if you're really serious about triathlons a good bike will make all the difference, but if you're just starting out it's probably not worth breaking the bank until you're sure you want to commit yourself to triathlon training.

Spinning classes will get your endurance for biking up - but always make sure you know how to stretch properly and warm up and warm down, otherwise you could be looking at some serious strains and injuries. Hillwalking is also a great way to build up muscle tone and endurance too. There are tonnes of tutorials out there in books and on the web to help you out.

Is Winsor Pilates really effective? Especially if you're quite overweight?

I'm sitting at home sick w/ a cold watching a Winsor Pilates infommercial. I keep seeing them referencing women going from size 12 down to small sizes. Do you think a curvier woman could really get in shape with this? I'd consider it if I knew it would really be effective.

Make sure you read the fine print on the infomercial. The women who dropped down multiple sizes watched what they ate and added cardio activity. I've talked to a few people who were part of groups for infomercials, and it's quite common for them to be on regimented diets and to supplement the exercise video or equipment sold with additional exercise. That said, someone who is diligent about nutrition, cardio, and the exercise in question could have similar results, but remember that consistency is key.

Winsor Pilates is not significantly different from the other Pilates programs out there. All derive from the exercise system devised by Joseph Pilates. The benefits of Winsor Pilates are its availability and accessibility. Mari Winsor has her own sequence of exercises, tweaks the form, and uses a different form of breathing in comparison to more traditional Pilates, but that's not that big of a deal for most people. I've read about a few people who do find her manner of presenting the exercises helpful to them. (Personally I prefer other instructors and find that I tighten up during the handful of Winsor workouts I have, since I don't think she includes enough of the more flexibility-oriented exercises, but I've tried a ton of Pilates videos.)

Pilates is a great system of exercises that can work for any body type or size. (Good instructors will provide modifications for people with limits in flexibility, range of motion, or strength, by the way, so don't feel intimidated or discouraged.) Most people find that they don't get "bulk" while doing these strength- and flexibility-oriented exercises, but you can't completely change the body type that has been genetically pre-determined for you. Since Pilates focuses primarily on strength / toning and flexibility, you will need to supplement with cardiovascular activity (walking, running, aerobics, bike rides or spinning, kickboxing, etc.) in order to get into shape. Pilates primarily works your core, or abs and back, so make sure you get enough work in for your upper and lower body. There are Pilates videos out there, including a couple good ones offered by Winsor, that will help you there. Or you can supplement Pilates with other exercises. (I use traditional weights, too, in addition to Pilates, but that's my choice.)

I see no reason not to give Winsor Pilates a try. It may work for you. If it doesn't, know that there are so many other varieties of Pilates out there. I personally like to use a mix of Classical Pilates, Stott Pilates, other personal takes on Pilates, and even some fusion workouts.

How can I find a place where I can play freely with my car's abilities?

Like many people, I have a cool car that I'd like to test the limits and have some fun with.
How can I find a place to do this - a place where I could test its handling, a long enough place to test its top speed, maybe even drag race a competitive friend.
I live in Colorado; perhaps there is some roadway that's made for these types of things which is free or won't kill my wallet? Then again, it doesn't necessarily have to be legal. I was thinking some unpopular highway out in the open land, curvy road in the mountains, or even an abandoned plane runway.
My question to you is: do you know of any places that I could have a lot of fun with little risk and/or a type of internet website that will have discussions about it, or possibly a tool that will find places like this for me (marked by other people, I would presume)?

I'm a responsible driver; as a result, I would never do anything stupid that would threaten my life or the life of others, so don't worry about that.

Go to large chunks of unused pavement. I think big areas are better than narrow roads becuase you actually want to spin out. You gotta cross the limit to know where it is! Anyway, bring a couple of cones to spread around. Between 10 pm and 4 am is a good window to avoid the public. I am serious and I have done this. You can even go to Google and look at the aerial photos as you pan around the outskirts of your town to look for these chunks of pavement. You will likely end up on privately owned commercial or industrial property. These are called 'Spots'. At least they were ten years ago. You don't tell strangers about them. You don't post them on the internet. You don't stay too long. Other than Google, making friends in the right crowd will take you there.

Now, don't just go out there without a plan. Do some research and decide what you will do before you get there. I think acceleration is fun, but that is rarely a limit you'll care about. Besides, that's a rich man's feature. Instead, try hard braking! Approach a chalk line at 60 MPH and slam the brakes when you cross it. Either get the ABS to engage or if you don't have that, learn pedal modulation (even better learning!). Try throttle steering! Yup, go in circles and let up and get on the gas while holding the steering wheel still and you'll feel big ovals and tight turns with squeeling tires. Try Slalom! Weave in and out of the cones, parking blocks, whatever and you'll learn to watch the road instead to fhe obstacle. Do any of the above too fast. You'll be surprised how fast too fast really is. You want to feel that limit, then you know where to back off from.

Finally, and very well worth the money, find a Car Control Clinic. Lot's of car clubs do them. I did one at an airport with the BMW club in my 240sx. It was lot's of fun. I felt limits and beyond. I even used my new skills just a week later to avoid a collision with both a bike and oncoming car!

I would check the local ebay, craig's list and paper for a used one. People buy these things all the time and give it up after a few weeks. They can get pretty boring but if you stick with it they are not too bad. I use a trainer in the Winter and ride the real thing once it gets nice. I real bike is a lot more fun and you can put them on a trainer when the weather gets bad.

What will happen to my legs and butt if I keep this up?

What would happen if I did this 6-7 days a week ? ----- 3 sets of 10 incline squats and lunges. Eat all natural diet like I am now. Have a small body frame and 17 years old. Ride a indoor spinning bike for and hour or 2 a day at low resistance, and long endurance. Plus I'm about to start a job where I have to be on my feet walking around a store for 30 hours a week. And I have a few layers of fat over my legs and butt I'm hoping to get rid of it this way because I can't run anymore :(

Diet is more important then any exercise when it comes to losing weight. Exercise tones muscles if you do it right " low resistance " will just waste your time. It's not what you eat its how much. You want to start walking if you need to stand on your feet. Running is even better walk, run, walk, run. Cycling will help tone muscles that running doesn't use.

Start out with an easy 10 min warm up and then pedal at 70-90 rpm with just enough resistance to get you breathing elevated. You should be sweating after 15-20 min if you are doing it right. Watch TV and crank it up a little during the commercials.

Buy some good shoes with a crepe sole.

How can i tell if the resistance unit is broken or malfunction in an indoor bike trainer?

I just bought an indoor bike trainer Cycleops JetFluid Pro, the salesman said there is no stock left so he sold me the on in the showcase with no discount(which I'm unhappy with), he claimed that the trainer is new and no one has used it before. After i rode on it I feel that it's a lot easier to ride on the trainer than ride on the road, is that normal? How can i tell if it's broken or not?

If you have a speedometer that picks up speed from the rear wheel spinning should be fairly easy till you get to speeds over 15mph after that you should feel the resistance build. Now if you do not have a speedometer or a cadence meter to measure how fast you are pedaling count your revolutions and pedal around 80rpm, put your bike in the big ring gear and pedal at 80rpm. If you can pedal with no problem increase speed by going to a smaller rear gear. As get to smaller and smaller rear gears it should get fairly hard to pedal, if so the unit is working properly. Riding on a trainer doesn't feel the same as on the road as you can't simulate the wind, road surface or climbs, If you want the feel of a road ride the closest you can get would be to go with a VR trainer.

Q. I am going into grade 10, which I have been told is the hardest grade in highschool, so a job would be too much, since I also take guitar lessons. I am one of those people who likes to go places, which requires money. Please do not suggest online money making opportunities because I dont want to waste my time on those. All suggestions are appreciated. I am not looking to get rich, just something on the side so I am not completely broke.

There are many ways of earning extra money. In some cases, people lose their jobs and it becomes survival money. All of the ideas that follow offer potentially good opportunities to earn some extra cash.

Volunteering
Work at a place that might have job opportunities for you e.g. a seniors center, hospital, golf course, etc. Meet a lot of people and network. They know people who know people and so on. The volunteering can also be personally enriching. Make suggestions for jobs you see need doing e.g. teaching the elderly how to use a computer.

Garage sales
Recycling and reusing are not dirty words! There is a ton of stuff out on garbage night that could be picked up that is still useful. If cleaned up or slightly repaired it is potentially worth lots of money e.g. picture frames, small furniture, sports equipment, cutlery and dinnerware, glass & pottery, jewelry, books, computer parts, etc. Once you get good at it and know prices, start going to garage sales and buy stuff that can be resold at a higher price at your own regular garage sales or at used goods shops.

Resell to Dealers
Flea market sellers, antique dealers, and consignment stores are only a few of the people who survive on the sale of used goods.

- TV's that people throw out can be worth about $10-$20 each to repair people who are always on the lookout.
- bikes can be sold to bike repair people and/or used sports equipment dealers. The going rate is anywhere from $10 and up. If they can be fixed at home, they can sell privately. Older "antique" bikes are often highly desirable. Ads in the paper and Buy & Sell type magazines should clear them out quickly for you.
- dehumidifiers and humidifiers can be sold to businesses that repair and sell them. If somebody is handy, it is usually easy to repair many dehumidifiers as the only thing wrong with many of them is a seized motor. A little oil and a few spins and it often works again, no problem. In the summer they sell for about $50-$60 if in good working condition.

Think of all the university student rooms and apartments that need a humidifier in the winter.

Sports Equipment
There is a lot of money in sports equipment. Ice skates, roller blades, snowboards, skateboards, etc. Get familiar with what used goods stores want and buy up newer models at yard/garage sales, estate sales, church rummage sales, etc. Sell them to "Play It Again Sports" stores. It is possible to find them all year for about $2-$10 and you can get $15-$25 or more for them at the stores. It is very easy to build up credits and then buy your own new sports equipment at minimum cost. In many cases, it is also possible to get cash for the equipment. Make sure there are no breaks or missing parts. It has to be flawless for safety reasons.

Door-to-door Selling
Find a product that could easily be sold door to door e.g. economy size boxes of saran wrap, garbage bags, deodorizers, etc. Something small and useful that everybody uses all the time. A novelty toy sold to kids in tourist districts is good too. Be alert and cautious when doing this!

Used Paperbacks and Novels
Check with used book dealers first to see how much they pay for them - usually from 25 cents and up. Also find out which books they find most desirable. Go to garage sales and buy them for about 10-15 cents each or cheaper. Some dealers also sell old magazines. Again, first find out which ones are most desirable. Check out garage sales and especially rummage sales at churches or schools for books. Although small, profit can be at least 50% or better.

Yard Work
If you have fairly good tools, cut lawns, rake areas, etc. Gotta do a good job though!!

Useful Services
Look for needs in parking lots, parks, busy streets, in grocery stores, etc. Walking dogs, watering plants regularly in somebody's yard, doing the edge trimming work around lawns ((I'm sure there are people who dislike that job as much as I do and would pay a kid to do it) One young girl was paid $15/hr to watch a company machine seal envelopes. They couldn't afford to not have anybody there if it jammed.

Garage Door Art
Imagine all the plain, unattractive "canvasses" attached to almost every house just waiting to be covered. Offer to put on large house numbers, pleasant abstract patterns or landscapes. Match or extend the painting to a nearby garden or walkway. With a few cans of paint, brushes and imagination, you can be making $100 or more per garage door.

Porch Rail Painting
Ever notice all the rusty porch railings in your neighborhood? With minimum investment of a few basic colors of rust-proof paint, a wire brush, metal sandpaper and some good small hairy roller brushes, you could make a lot of money sprucing them up.

They are called Indoor Stationary Trainers and you can buy them at a number of places. Try Performance Bike or Bike Nasbar. The bike the sites listed below you can order online from either or call which ever you prefer or you can try your local bike shop but you will probably pay more at the LBS.

IMO if you're going to purchase a trainer purchase it from a reputable dealer or bike store, don't waste your money at Walmart or Target, buying a trainer from one of those is like buying there bikes (it's a minimal use only.)

Take martial arts classes. Thereâs a good reason female martial arts experts have shapely derrieres; they spend hours kicking in all different directions. How to Get Rid of Saddlebags

Fat that settles in over your hips, thighs and buttocks forms what some refer to as saddlebags. While genes certainly play a role, you can learn how to get rid of saddlebags through diet and exercise. By targeting your saddlebags with specific exercises, you may be able to get rid of them or at least minimize their appearance.

Steps
1 Stop overeating and maintain a healthy, low-calorie diet. Make sure most of your calories come from unprocessed fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

2 Blast away saddlebags with cardio exercise. To loose weight, you must burn more calories than you consume. While walking is fine, it does not burn as many calories as heart-pumping dance workouts or even a walk-jog combination.
Start biking or check out a spinning class at your local exercise club. Working on an elliptical machine is also a good exercise for getting rid of saddlebags. Not only do these exercises burn calories, they build muscle to firm up any flab around the buttocks and hips.
Burn at least 400 calories 5 times a week. You may need to work up to this goal, so don't push yourself too hard if you can't sustain that level of activity in the beginning.

3 Include strength training into your exercise routine at least 3 times a week. Building muscles increases your body's ability to burn fat.

4 Do step-ups using a workout bench or exercise steps. Hold a dumbbells in each hand with your arms down at your side. Step up with your right foot onto the bench and then your left foot. Step down with your right, then your left foot. Repeat 10 times. Reverse the lead foot and repeat the exercise 10 times.
Beginners should start with 2-pound weights and work up to 15 pounds in each arm. Aim for 3 to 4 sets on each foot.

5 Perform side leg raises by putting on ankle weights and holding on to a wall or piece of furniture to gain balance. Lift your right leg up straight in front of your body as far as you can. Lower your leg and repeat 10 times. Switch legs and lift 10 times. Keep your hips straight during the exercise
Aim for 3 or 4 sets on each leg.

6 Do leg lift exercises on the floor. Extend your legs and lie on your right side, with your hips stacked and your head supported by your right elbow. Raise your leg as high as you can and lower it. Repeat 10 times and then switch sides. Keep your abdominal muscles tight.
Aim for 3 sets per leg. You can use resistance bands or ankle weights for a more advanced workout.

7 Modify your leg lifts by getting on your hands and knees, with your hands below your shoulders and your knees below your hips. With your knee bent, raise your left leg out to the side as high as you can. Hold it for 2 seconds and lower the leg back down. Keep your abs tight and your hips in line with your body. Repeat 10 times and switch legs.

8 Aim for 3 sets on each leg.

i would like to read magazines, books, use the internet, and watch netflix. i want something lightweight that i can look at while using an excercise bike at the gym too.

Hi Ginger, it's very simple indeed. Nook Tablet (which is Nook Color 2) is the best - it's been getting rave pro reviews on the web and it is the best device in it's class - much better than Kindle Fire. It's got Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Angry Brids, etc., the best battery life (30% Better), the best non-glare laminated screen (visibly noticeable difference in side by side tests in video playback and eBooks reading), double the RAM and space for apps/photos/movies, microSD slot (not on Kindle) and a microphone for Skype (not on Kindle), and much zippier performance during video playback and apps usage than choppy/laggy act of Kindle Fire according to many user reviews. Nook wights a bit less than Kindle as well. Also, it's been reported that many Kindle Fire units have faulty Wi-Fi and people have a lot of issues connecting to internet according to many user reviews. Amazon's own web site has hundreds (more than 1800 now) of reviews of Kindle Fire's new owners that gave it 1 or 2 star reviews because of choppy/laggy experience they got from this underpowered device. Other issues are that it runs hot to touch, video playback is jerky, touch screen is not responsive and it takes 2-3 touches to register, power button placement is very poor and is prone to accidental power off, all the hype of Silk browser is a myth where the browsing is actually slower than on other Android tablets, etc.

Make sure you read the fine print on the infomercial. The women who dropped down multiple sizes watched what they ate and added cardio activity. I've talked to a few people who were part of groups for infomercials, and it's quite common for them to be on regimented diets and to supplement the exercise video or equipment sold with additional exercise. That said, someone who is diligent about nutrition, cardio, and the exercise in question could have similar results, but remember that consistency is key.

Winsor Pilates is not significantly different from the other Pilates programs out there. All derive from the exercise system devised by Joseph Pilates. The benefits of Winsor Pilates are its availability and accessibility. Mari Winsor has her own sequence of exercises, tweaks the form, and uses a different form of breathing in comparison to more traditional Pilates, but that's not that big of a deal for most people. I've read about a few people who do find her manner of presenting the exercises helpful to them. (Personally I prefer other instructors and find that I tighten up during the handful of Winsor workouts I have, since I don't think she includes enough of the more flexibility-oriented exercises, but I've tried a ton of Pilates videos.)

Pilates is a great system of exercises that can work for any body type or size. (Good instructors will provide modifications for people with limits in flexibility, range of motion, or strength, by the way, so don't feel intimidated or discouraged.) Most people find that they don't get "bulk" while doing these strength- and flexibility-oriented exercises, but you can't completely change the body type that has been genetically pre-determined for you. Since Pilates focuses primarily on strength / toning and flexibility, you will need to supplement with cardiovascular activity (walking, running, aerobics, bike rides or spinning, kickboxing, etc.) in order to get into shape. Pilates primarily works your core, or abs and back, so make sure you get enough work in for your upper and lower body. There are Pilates videos out there, including a couple good ones offered by Winsor, that will help you there. Or you can supplement Pilates with other exercises. (I use traditional weights, too, in addition to Pilates, but that's my choice.)

I see no reason not to give Winsor Pilates a try. It may work for you. If it doesn't, know that there are so many other varieties of Pilates out there. I personally like to use a mix of Classical Pilates, Stott Pilates, other personal takes on Pilates, and even some fusion workouts.

I'm a customer not an instructor, but I've been to a lot of clubs and rode a lot of spin bikes. The best one I've been on was a Lemond Revmaster. There have been other good ones, but the little design details of the Lemond made it really good for a hard-core roadie like me.

How do I stop the squeaking on my spinning bike?

The calipers and pads that provide the friction on the heavy wheel of my spinning bike squeak. How to I stop it from squeaking?

Lube the pivot points on the caliper and don't get any on the brake pads or the suface the pads ride on. Use something like Finishline's Triflow in a drip bottle. It comes with a little straw and will be easier to apply and not make a mess than an aerosol. You may also check the pads that privide the resistance and make sure they aren't worn. (most are felt and will wear out).

As a rule of thumb, the more expensive a bike or part is, the lighter it will be, over the cheaper parts. When it comes to Flatland, a light bike is usually better, and will allow you to develop your skills a lot faster, and let you ride longer, without getting as tired as you would if you were riding a street bike for Flatland.

So in saying all that, here are your options...

You can still ride Flat on a street bike, if you change a few parts, it will just not be as 'smooth' and easy as riding a flatland bike. Heres what you will need to do to your current bike if you wanna make it more of a flat-bike...
- Get a longer seat post, around 300mm, and set it to max. height, as noted on the bottom of the post.
- Get minimal or zero offset forks, to make front wheel tricks way easier. They allow u to pop up onto the front wheel so eaisly.
- Put pegs on, all round.
- Be sure to have a gyro set up for back brakes
- Put a shorter reach stem on. Anywhere from 26mm-40mm.
- Get tyres no wider than 1.95, and make sure they're high-psi. For flatland, 120psi is super smooth for spinning and rolling.
- If you really wanna lighten ur bike without spending much, take the cranks off. You'll save about 2 kilos, and you can do a lot of tricks without needing to pedal. It's not a popular option, but it's a cheaper one.

So there are some options for you. The main deciding factor for people buying a Flatland bike, is budget. I splurged and bought pro-everything when I build mine, so I knew nothing was going to hold me back from learning, except myself. Right now, there is 10% off on all parts and bikes from the site I've posted links to, so now is the time to buy... you'll save a packet.

What does it mean when ppl say that a motorcycle is too big for you?

I've just asked a question about a motorcycle and all the responders said that it was too big for a beginner. Are they talking about the weight or the power of the engine? What's a good beginner bike and what should I look for?

To me, there are 3 types of "too big." One is weight, namely the bike being too heavy for you to balance or to pick up should you drop it. Another is physical size, as in the seat being too tall for your feet to touch the ground. The last isn't necessarily engine size, but rather horsepower and in how it's delivered.

A big twin cruiser of any number of makes may have a large displacement engine, but still not have uncontrollable horsepower. If anything, such an engine is actually easier to operate because with loads of low rpm power, they are hard to stall and you can twist the throttle and accellerate away quickly in an emergency situation rather than having to downshift 3 or 4 gears to get any kind of accelleration. On the down side, cruisers tend to be somewhat heavy, especially considering their rather low power output. Drop one and a small person or woman could require help to get it back upright. But on the plus side, cruisers usually have a low seat height, making that weight easy to handle at stops and slow speeds. Think of a gentle but powerful work horse.

True sport bikes tend to be really light in weight, especially considering their high horsepower output. This makes for extreme accelleration, but it also makes for unplanned wheelies and spin outs. They also usually lack low rpm power, meaning you have to keep the rpms up. Especially for a beginner, such a bike can be very difficult to learn to ride on. Think of a high strung race horse that's good for one thing only, going fast.

That said, a hyper, lightweight tall seated 600cc sport bike could be way too much bike for a new rider to handle while a heavier, low seat and lower powered 800cc cruiser could be really easy to learn on. A lot of people suggest starting out with a 250cc Ninja but I don't necessarily agree. For some people, that neat little bike is all the bike they will ever want and will never want anything different. And while it's lightweight and easy to handle, the small engine must really be wrung out to get any kind of horsepower. That means it won't tolerate abrupt clutch engagements (you'll stall the engine) or short shifting (shifting to the next higher gear at low rpms) and while it'll keep up with interstate traffic, that's just about it. Something like a 700-800cc cruiser will be much more forgiving and will have enough power to keep you entertained for several years rather than you being ready to trade up in 6 months. If you're a 5' 90 lb woman, then they would probably be too much bike, but my 5'2" 125 lb ex rode a 700cc cruiser and never had any problems.

I recently bought an upright exercise bike from Walmart (Gold's gym power spin 210). It is incredibly uncomfortable and I would like to know if there is a way of replacing the seat with another one, kind of like a universal exercise seat that will fit on my bike? Thanks!

It looks like it is a proprietary seat and seat post from looking at the manual. You can try to keep riding and it will get better once you get use to it. Everyone has to go through butt training when they first start riding a bike even if they rode the whole summer before and took the winter off. You can try a gel seat cover or just use a piece of 1 inch foam. Raise the saddle high enough so that your leg is straight with the heel of you foot is over the center of the pedal and a slight bend with the ball of your foot in the same place.

Take shorter rides until you get use to it.

Not the "sit bones" pain, I know that's expected. But this is my tailbone. I have had tail bone pain before, however never directly injured it. I had the instructor help with positioning. Shoud I try a gel seat of padded bike shorts?
also is there a certain way I should shift my weight to take the pressure off my tail bone?

Definitely go with padded shorts. Seat covers and gel seats are actually counter productive. They increase the surface area which may sound like a good thing, but in actuality it becomes more uncomfortable. Larger seats with larger surface area means you'll be putting weight on parts of your butt/nether regions that you shouldn't. It also can lead to more discomfort due to chafing (hence why most cyclists use small seats.)

I am one of those people who likes to go places, which requires money. Please do not suggest online money making opportunities because I dont want to waste my time on those. There are many ways of earning extra money. In some cases, people lose their jobs and it becomes survival money. All of the ideas that follow offer potentially good opportunities to earn some extra cash.

Volunteering
Work at a place that might have job opportunities for you e.g. a seniors center, hospital, golf course, etc. Meet a lot of people and network. They know people who know people and so on. The volunteering can also be personally enriching. Make suggestions for jobs you see need doing e.g. teaching the elderly how to use a computer.

Garage sales
Recycling and reusing are not dirty words! There is a ton of stuff out on garbage night that could be picked up that is still useful. If cleaned up or slightly repaired it is potentially worth lots of money e.g. picture frames, small furniture, sports equipment, cutlery and dinnerware, glass & pottery, jewelry, books, computer parts, etc. Once you get good at it and know prices, start going to garage sales and buy stuff that can be resold at a higher price at your own regular garage sales or at used goods shops.

Resell to Dealers
Flea market sellers, antique dealers, and consignment stores are only a few of the people who survive on the sale of used goods.

- TV's that people throw out can be worth about $10-$20 each to repair people who are always on the lookout.
- bikes can be sold to bike repair people and/or used sports equipment dealers. The going rate is anywhere from $10 and up. If they can be fixed at home, they can sell privately. Older "antique" bikes are often highly desirable. Ads in the paper and Buy & Sell type magazines should clear them out quickly for you.
- dehumidifiers and humidifiers can be sold to businesses that repair and sell them. If somebody is handy, it is usually easy to repair many dehumidifiers as the only thing wrong with many of them is a seized motor. A little oil and a few spins and it often works again, no problem. In the summer they sell for about $50-$60 if in good working condition.

Think of all the university student rooms and apartments that need a humidifier in the winter.

Sports Equipment
There is a lot of money in sports equipment. Ice skates, roller blades, snowboards, skateboards, etc. Get familiar with what used goods stores want and buy up newer models at yard/garage sales, estate sales, church rummage sales, etc. Sell them to "Play It Again Sports" stores. It is possible to find them all year for about $2-$10 and you can get $15-$25 or more for them at the stores. It is very easy to build up credits and then buy your own new sports equipment at minimum cost. In many cases, it is also possible to get cash for the equipment. Make sure there are no breaks or missing parts. It has to be flawless for safety reasons.

Door-to-door Selling
Find a product that could easily be sold door to door e.g. economy size boxes of saran wrap, garbage bags, deodorizers, etc. Something small and useful that everybody uses all the time. A novelty toy sold to kids in tourist districts is good too. Be alert and cautious when doing this!

Used Paperbacks and Novels
Check with used book dealers first to see how much they pay for them - usually from 25 cents and up. Also find out which books they find most desirable. Go to garage sales and buy them for about 10-15 cents each or cheaper. Some dealers also sell old magazines. Again, first find out which ones are most desirable. Check out garage sales and especially rummage sales at churches or schools for books. Although small, profit can be at least 50% or better.

Yard Work
If you have fairly good tools, cut lawns, rake areas, etc. Gotta do a good job though!!

Useful Services
Look for needs in parking lots, parks, busy streets, in grocery stores, etc. Walking dogs, watering plants regularly in somebody's yard, doing the edge trimming work around lawns ((I'm sure there are people who dislike that job as much as I do and would pay a kid to do it) One young girl was paid $15/hr to watch a company machine seal envelopes. They couldn't afford to not have anybody there if it jammed.

Garage Door Art
Imagine all the plain, unattractive "canvasses" attached to almost every house just waiting to be covered. Offer to put on large house numbers, pleasant abstract patterns or landscapes. Match or extend the painting to a nearby garden or walkway. With a few cans of paint, brushes and imagination, you can be making $100 or more per garage door.

Porch Rail Painting
Ever notice all the rusty porch railings in your neighborhood? With minimum investment of a few basic colors of rust-proof paint, a wire brush, metal sandpaper and some good small hairy roller brushes, you could make a lot of money sprucing them up.

A well considered answer into a price range that only buys a "weekend warrier" type bike?

Okay, then we'll try to give you some variety and a few good hints to see that you get the most pleasure out of it.

Starting off with the very fastest bike in that price range, the Specialized Allez Triple simply blows the rest away (followed shortly by Canondale), while saving you enough to get a decent wheelset. Unfortunately, the fragile frame, responsible for its speed, requires accomodations. Should you get it an enhanced wheelset, each wheel should contain a minimum of 20 evenly spaced spokes and more is fine. That's a bit more expensive than the 16 spoke decoration wheels. You'll also need a shorter stem than the one included, because headtube crackout is a sure thing with a "gorilla" stem. Profile Designs H20 90mm would bring it within the range of normal and safety, but this isn't the bike for you if your arms are long or if you are heavier than 150 pounds.

Schwinn road bikes, while not glamorous, are extraordinarily effective at their no-compromise blend of speed and comfort. You may find one that is, in fact below your price range to have equally satisfying performance to other manufacturers higher priced bikes.
Technology trickle-down provides a featherweight, yet extremely durable AND shock absorbing 3d aluminum frame to Schwinn road bikes from $375 on up.

At the price range you're looking at, there's about two effective differences between these and a $2000 bike. Those are crankset with alloy chainrings and fast wheels (specifically, 20/20 or 24/20 with effective, evenly spaced spokes). These are easy to change. Due to technology trickledown which results in fantastic frames and rear drive systems for all modern bikes and the fact that the usual two lacking points (above) are ever so much less expensive aftermarket, price no longer has merit.

In fact there's an odd looking yet extraordinary application of a "compact double" with a mountain rear drive such as the one illustrated in order to eliminate the uphill chainring dance.

Not even the finest athletes can race the hills of England without such equipment. The difference has little to no effect on price, so your bike might as well be equipped to handle a wider variety of courses, thus resulting in finer enjoyment with the additional ability to "go forwards" regardless of terrain or possible exhaustion (it happens).
Spinning an easy floating sensation up hills is also a fine feature--that doesn't cost anything extra.

The least weird looking application of advanced gearing goes on a bike with a road triple, 9 speeds on rear, and Ultegra's famous 12-27 cassette. This is about $70 aftermarket and is plug-n-play simple. Sometimes advanced gearing is available at no cost, although usually involving one of Sram's featherweight 8 speed cassettes (when there's no extra cost).

Modern "size" caveats include not listing the effects of tire clearance, having every other size medium bike a 54 or 56 and totally at random, having every other size large bike a 56, 57 or 58, and totally at random, regardless of brand or model and varying within brands--by each and every model.

Another caveat is that the old school idea of using stand-over height to judge the bike is now totally wrong. That will result in an exhausting large heavy thing that is slow to sprint, slow to climb and won't keep up. Professional athletes keep one of these around because the intense added challenge results in rapid gains of strength. My trainer is this way (through foul luck) and it certainly does work for strength building--gains on every single ride, despite its unpleasant nature (putting the lie to a premium brand). This is now the easiest way to buy a trainer for harsh exercise and the worst way to get a "good" bike for enjoyment.

Because of the rapidly increasing length of top tubes throughout the varying bike sizes, buying a larger bike for the purposes of an easier reach will backfire badly. The handlebars of the larger bike are actually now a much farther reach.


Your test drives will quickly determine the bike for you, and there's no other way to do it right.

The good bike will make you smile when you ride it. It will seem faster than the other selections because it will have optimal ergonomics for your body. It will allow you to straighten your back or not at your choice/whim.

The good bike is the one that you have test ridden five times so far, compared others to it, and now absolutely refuse to leave it at the store.

It really is that easy, or that difficult, depending on your approach.

How can I make my bike sound better?

I'm personally not worried about how loud my bike is, I have a 2004 Honda rebel 250. Will taking the baffles out mess up he bike? And is there any way I can remove them without drilling holes? I just want a quick easy way to make it sound better. I don't want to put to much time and money into a bike when I'm getting another soon. Any help?

It won't hurt performance, but you might have to rejet the carb.

Besides the sound baffles there are two other little items in the exhaust. There is also a spark arrestor screen and a turbulence screw.

The spark arrestor screen is just that, a screen that stops hot carbon pieces from exiting the exhaust. It is mainly made for off road, but is also required on road bikes.

The turbulence screw is something most guys don't know about. It looks like a giant screw thread or auger thread and it is welded into the exhaust pipes. The turbulence screw spins the exhaust gases so it doesn't free flow out.

I have never done it to a Honda Reble, but have done it to several other Honda's in the past. I would purchase a new muffler/silencer from an after market company that was a free flowing design. You can pick up used motorcycle silencers for under $50. Cut the pipes at where they line up with the back of the engine cases. Add an extension pipe (if needed) so you can mount the new/used muffler/silencer.

If you are the ultimate cheap bastard and you do not want to drill out the baffles, you can try ramming them out. This will generally not work, because they are welded into place. You would need a really long metal rod center punch. This will work for the spark arrestor part, but not the baffles or the turbulence screw.

I, and most cyclist here will say a bike on a TRAINER is the best. Trainers are fairly cheap many $100 to $150. But the bike of your choice. I recommend buying a cheap smooth tire for the back wheel, it works much better that way and won't wear out your knobbie tire.

Which bike is better for weight loss?

I am interested in losing a little weight and toning up a bit, but I don't want a short term thing. I was ready to buy a recumbent bike to work out indoors because it is getting cooler and i won't have an excuse not to use it. Although I saw on biggest loser the trainer said to get a spin bike. I am not sure what that is but he said that it is the best workout u can get? Any suggestions for me? I am strictly asking about the bikes. I already know about diet.

The one you continue to use is the best one. Real cyclists all use a regular outdoor bike on a trainer (see links below). The least expensive trainers, like I use, are less than $100 (minus bike). The benefit is that once you take the bike off, they take up hardly any space, and when you're riding, it feels the same as your regular bike, because it IS your regular bike.

If money is no object, Computrainer is the gold standard. It interfaces with your computer, (and HRM or Powertap if you have them), allowing you to ride various virtual courses, or even race friends on the internet.

Spin bikes are a specialized contraption used in spin classes. Spin classes can be a fun diversion, but I wouldn't bother with one of those for home use.

i was thinking about taking a water pump and trying to light an LED using a small stepper motor or something. what is the smallest application of this. today i bought a small dc motor and got it to light an LED by putting the spindle to a spinning wheel (bike tire) but there is no way i could get enough power from a water pump to turn that little motor fast enouph to light an led. so maybe i need a bigger dc motor and turbine? anyway...basically what is the smallest application possible to light the smallest energy using light. thank you!

It is useful in small, remote communities that require only a small amount of electricity - for example, to power one or two fluorescent light bulbs and a TV or radio in 50 or so homes. its a 2011 mirraco bronson, fully sealed bearings. i pack the hub with grease, but it still does the same thing with out grease. my chain is not tight, but doesnt have much slack either.

what can i do to fix this?

You could have tighten the cones too tight when you packed the new grease. You will have to undo until you get it right, or the cones have been pitted in which case you will have to replace them.

with the tred on the tyres there should be a little blob of rubber in the tred to indicate the minimum tred line, if this is flush to the top of the tred then youll need to change them and for the brakes ( disk brakes ) then you can just look at the disk and you will see the brake pads touching it, they should be 3mm to 10000000000mm if any less then i would change it, if you spin the wheel and hear a scrraping noice then it could need changing

Q. I am going into grade 10, which I have been told is the hardest grade in highschool, so a job would be too much, since I also take guitar lessons. I am one of those people who likes to go places, which requires money. Please do not suggest online money making opportunities because I dont want to waste my time on those. All suggestions are appreciated. I am not looking to get rich, just something on the side so I am not completely broke.

There are many ways of earning extra money. In some cases, people lose their jobs and it becomes survival money. All of the ideas that follow offer potentially good opportunities to earn some extra cash.

Volunteering
Work at a place that might have job opportunities for you e.g. a seniors center, hospital, golf course, etc. Meet a lot of people and network. They know people who know people and so on. The volunteering can also be personally enriching. Make suggestions for jobs you see need doing e.g. teaching the elderly how to use a computer.

Garage sales
Recycling and reusing are not dirty words! There is a ton of stuff out on garbage night that could be picked up that is still useful. If cleaned up or slightly repaired it is potentially worth lots of money e.g. picture frames, small furniture, sports equipment, cutlery and dinnerware, glass & pottery, jewelry, books, computer parts, etc. Once you get good at it and know prices, start going to garage sales and buy stuff that can be resold at a higher price at your own regular garage sales or at used goods shops.

Resell to Dealers
Flea market sellers, antique dealers, and consignment stores are only a few of the people who survive on the sale of used goods.

- TV's that people throw out can be worth about $10-$20 each to repair people who are always on the lookout.
- bikes can be sold to bike repair people and/or used sports equipment dealers. The going rate is anywhere from $10 and up. If they can be fixed at home, they can sell privately. Older "antique" bikes are often highly desirable. Ads in the paper and Buy & Sell type magazines should clear them out quickly for you.

Think of all the university student rooms and apartments that need a humidifier in the winter.

It is very easy to build up credits and then buy your own new sports equipment at minimum cost. In many cases, it is also possible to get cash for the equipment. Make sure there are no breaks or missing parts. It has to be flawless for safety reasons.

Door-to-door Selling
Find a product that could easily be sold door to door e.g. economy size boxes of saran wrap, garbage bags, deodorizers, etc. Something small and useful that everybody uses all the time. A novelty toy sold to kids in tourist districts is good too. Be alert and cautious when doing this!

Used Paperbacks and Novels
Check with used book dealers first to see how much they pay for them - usually from 25 cents and up. Also find out which books they find most desirable. Go to garage sales and buy them for about 10-15 cents each or cheaper. Some dealers also sell old magazines. Again, first find out which ones are most desirable. Check out garage sales and especially rummage sales at churches or schools for books. Although small, profit can be at least 50% or better.

Yard Work
If you have fairly good tools, cut lawns, rake areas, etc. Gotta do a good job though!!

Ever notice all the rusty porch railings in your neighborhood? With minimum investment of a few basic colors of rust-proof paint, a wire brush, metal sandpaper and some good small hairy roller brushes, you could make a lot of money sprucing them up.

Okay, then we'll try to give you some variety and a few good hints to see that you get the most pleasure out of it.

Starting off with the very fastest bike in that price range, the Specialized Allez Triple simply blows the rest away (followed shortly by Canondale), while saving you enough to get a decent wheelset. Unfortunately, the fragile frame, responsible for its speed, requires accomodations. Should you get it an enhanced wheelset, each wheel should contain a minimum of 20 evenly spaced spokes and more is fine. That's a bit more expensive than the 16 spoke decoration wheels. You'll also need a shorter stem than the one included, because headtube crackout is a sure thing with a "gorilla" stem. Profile Designs H20 90mm would bring it within the range of normal and safety, but this isn't the bike for you if your arms are long or if you are heavier than 150 pounds.

Schwinn road bikes, while not glamorous, are extraordinarily effective at their no-compromise blend of speed and comfort. You may find one that is, in fact below your price range to have equally satisfying performance to other manufacturers higher priced bikes.

Not even the finest athletes can race the hills of England without such equipment. The difference has little to no effect on price, so your bike might as well be equipped to handle a wider variety of courses, thus resulting in finer enjoyment with the additional ability to "go forwards" regardless of terrain or possible exhaustion (it happens).
Spinning an easy floating sensation up hills is also a fine feature--that doesn't cost anything extra.

The least weird looking application of advanced gearing goes on a bike with a road triple, 9 speeds on rear, and Ultegra's famous 12-27 cassette. This is about $70 aftermarket and is plug-n-play simple. Sometimes advanced gearing is available at no cost, although usually involving one of Sram's featherweight 8 speed cassettes (when there's no extra cost).

Modern "size" caveats include not listing the effects of tire clearance, having every other size medium bike a 54 or 56 and totally at random, having every other size large bike a 56, 57 or 58, and totally at random, regardless of brand or model and varying within brands--by each and every model.

Another caveat is that the old school idea of using stand-over height to judge the bike is now totally wrong. That will result in an exhausting large heavy thing that is slow to sprint, slow to climb and won't keep up. Professional athletes keep one of these around because the intense added challenge results in rapid gains of strength. My trainer is this way (through foul luck) and it certainly does work for strength building--gains on every single ride, despite its unpleasant nature (putting the lie to a premium brand). This is now the easiest way to buy a trainer for harsh exercise and the worst way to get a "good" bike for enjoyment.

Because of the rapidly increasing length of top tubes throughout the varying bike sizes, buying a larger bike for the purposes of an easier reach will backfire badly. The handlebars of the larger bike are actually now a much farther reach.


Your test drives will quickly determine the bike for you, and there's no other way to do it right.

The good bike will make you smile when you ride it. It will seem faster than the other selections because it will have optimal ergonomics for your body. It will allow you to straighten your back or not at your choice/whim.

The good bike is the one that you have test ridden five times so far, compared others to it, and now absolutely refuse to leave it at the store.

It really is that easy, or that difficult, depending on your approach.

I'm currently cycling on a stationary bike thrice a week at "weight loss mode-" the resistance alternates between higher and lower. I'm afraid this will give me bigger legs. I don't want to build any bulk, and I've read about cycling making your legs big. Should I start running instead? I only want to lose fat, not build a lot of muscle.

Cycling won't make your legs bigger unless you decide to be a track sprinter or train at a low pedalling cadence in big gears. Your current training, being geared to weight loss, will be generally low intensity although as you get more advanced you will be able to do higher intensities to burn off calories faster.

Advice: keep your pedalling cadence relatively high at around 80 -100 rpm and gradually build up intensity. If you really want to slim down get a bike and enjoy touring around your local countryside you will find you can do it for longer because it is great fun, especially if you do it with friends. OR you could try 'spinning' classes at your local gym.

Running/jogging will have similar effects it just depends on which you like best. I live near an international athletics stadium and sometimes see women middle distance runners training. From a blokes point of view the long slim legs are all just terrific!!

How can I lose 20 pounds in a couple months?

Q. I'm looking to lose about 20 pounds to get fit. I want to know what's the most efficient way to do that? I own a treadmill and a stationary bike as well. So what do you guys recommend I do to lose weight efficiently and quickly as well.

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio is the only fat burning exercise and burns fat all over your body (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), weight training a few days a week but never work on the same muscle group two days in a row (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
