Is it OK to wear a bicycle helmet during spin class?

Blazer

I have recently begun taking spin classes. However, I have heard of people having accidents, where the spin cycle tips over or where an irate participant pushes the cycle over out of spite. I would feel more comfortable wearing a helmet. In addition, it would allow me to create the proper mental atmosphere for the exercise, similar to being on the open road. Would that look odd or result in ridicule from my fellow spinners?
I can't believe you thought I was serious!

Answer
NO!!! no helmet in a spin class, those are all rumors and if some one does push you over etc, you can take them to court for assault. Find a bike next to the wall or pillar so you can steady yourself if the bike tips.

Does cycling in spin class affect sperm production?

3177430

Does cycling in spin class affect sperm production? Or is it only outdoor cycling that affects it?

I've heard that cycling can decrease sperm production and male fertility. I was just curious as to why this was and if riding a stationary bike indoors for 45 minutes 2/3 times a week have a negative effect on my sperm.

Answer
No reason it would, loads of people bike and as far as I know are not more prone to fertility problems.

How do i tighten my chain?

Eric V

I have a little yamaha PW 80 and the chain keeps falling off and i need to tighten it but i dont know how, anyone know how to do that?

Answer
You did not say what year you have, but adjusting the chain is fairly easy. There are two basic types of chain tensioners on the market. Snail and pull back. Your Yamaha PW80 should have pull back.

1. Get the rear wheel off the ground. You can do this with a shop stool or some milk crates.
2. Loosen the rear axle. Do not take the axle all the way off, just loosen it so you can turn it freely.
3. Both ends of the axle are connected to the swing arm. The swing arm is the rear part of the motorcycle that holds the rear wheel. At the swing arm ends, connected to the axles you should see a part that looks like an "I" bolt (this is your chain adjuster) connected to the axle with a nut on the end that is at the very back of the swing arm.
4. On the round part of the "I" bolt should have notches on it. There will also be notches on your swing arm.
5. Tighten the chain adjuster on the chain side first. You want about 2" to 3" (2 to 3 inches) of total movement (up & down) out of the chain when you are done (depending on your owners manual or rear suspension set up). To check the chain movement by grabbing the chain with your fingers below the swing arm and about in the middle of the swing arm. Move the chain up and down to see how much movement you have. Make a note of where the notch on the chain adjuster is to the notches on the swing arm.
6. Go to the opposite side of the bike and tighter/loosen that chain adjuster to the same position on the swing arm as the chain side.
7. Go back to the chain side and check the slack in the chain. You want about 2" to 3" of total movement out of the chain. Keep adjusting both sides until you get about 2" to 3" of slack and both chain adjusters are at the same marks on both sides of the swing arm.
8. Tighten up the axle (you should use a torque wrench and torque the axle nut to spec's). Spin the wheel and visually check the alignment of the rear sprocket to the counter-shaft sprocket. The chain should be in a straight line as you are looking at the sprockets from back to front.

That's it. I would put some chain lube on the chain, check for any worn or broken teeth on the sprockets, check your spokes, inspect your tires, check tire pressure, check the linkage to the rear shock, inspect the shock and check your rear brake settings since you moved the rear wheel.

It's good to hear that someone wants to work on their own bike, most people just put gas in them and ride them. Being able to work on your own bike gives you mechanical skills, knowledge, how things operate and save you a ton of cash in the long run.

Do you recommend any good brand for scooter other than the expensive Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki?

I found a lot of cheap chinese mopeds but who wants to buy them anyway. I'm looking for good quality150cc moped for $2000 max.
Thanks in advance

Answer
The only reasonably well built and affordable bikes, other than the Japanese and European scooters, would be from KYMco and SYM. I have heard some very good things about these companies. Both are companies that have spun off from Honda and are based in Taiwan.

However, while a parts supply chain is in place, somewhat, there is a limited number of service centers for these brands at this time. As sales increase, KYMco and SYM will address these problems, but for the foreseeable future, the Japanese manufacturers have a lock on this market.

The other option is to go with the European scooters, which are in fact very well built, but have a rather high price tag on them. The parts supply chain for the European scooters is problematic at best, but workable.

If all you can afford, at this time, is a low buck Chinese scooter, than keep saving your money until you can afford a nice scooter. http://www.clevelandscooters.com/id60.html
There are some good used Japanese and European scooters out there as well. Just don't settle for something that there is no parts or service available for.

I just boutgh the motobecane immortal force and Im wondering how it is, if you bought another motobecane online Im also currious how it its plus which one you got. I would really appreciate it

Answer
I didn't but two friends of mine bought Motos. A Fly Pro and a Le Champion. Both are extremely happy with their bikes. I got to take both for a spin and thought they were very good bikes and spec'ed better than any bike for the price.

The Le champion was one size too big for me but still felt good and had very similar characteristics to my Cannondale which I love. Stiff frame and tracked true. The AC 420 wheels are great. The 10 Ultergra shifted better than my 9 speed. It came with Kenda tires, they do the job but aren't my favorite tire. The Fly Pro has an awesome flat black paint job. Came with super light Kenda's with small knobs, not good for muddy or very loose conditions but fast. Both these bikes are crazy light as well. If I didn't have my bikes I'd buy both.

Does anyone use the Giant Cypress XL to commute to work every day?

semioutoft

And if so can you give me a review of the bike?... Im about to spend 400.00 on it and I'd like to make sure that It will be a comfortable ride for 15 miles each way to work and back. thanks

Answer
Giant makes good bikes. If you are traveling on a smooth road most of the time a hybrid bike without shocks will be a little more efficient and liter, the disk brakes are not really needed. It's an LX.

http://www.roadbikereview.com/cat/latest-bikes/hybrid-bike/giant-bicycle-inc/PRD_291053_5672crx.aspx

Take it for a spin and then look at other manufactures bikes of the same type. It's always a good idea to look at Giant first so you have something to compare the others to.

It is a proform 290 spx if that helps. I just bought it today and when operating it seems to be quite loud in the chain area or the flywheel I am not quite sure but I have been on spin bikes before and they are pretty much silent and this one is not. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Answer

Is this too long to exercise on a Spin Bike?

Saint

I started exercising on my spin bike 4-5 days a week, for about 2 and a half hours each day. Is that too much? I know over exercising can be bad for you so just thought of asking to play it safe. Also, the way I do it is I do a really hard setting for 30 minutes to get the muscles nice and active, and the rest of the time on an easier setting, thought that may be important.

Answer
Not too long. Now, not so sure about your plan and what you want to accomplish, where are you and where you wan to be. What are your goals?

I often ride 75-100 miles so I put more time on the saddle but not so many times a week. Yet most of my rides are about 2 hours at an average speed of 16-18 mph.

You should be doing warm up and cool down (15 minutes each). There is no logic to start up hard with cold muscles. That will lead to injury. It is much better to do the hard work towards the middle of the work out. Rather than just working hard once, is better to do intervals. That trains your heart to accelerate on demand and slow down for recovery. Also rather than work hard for 30 minutes and then slow down for 2 hours. Try to find what is the speed that you can sustain for all that time. For instance, if you work our 30 minutes at 20 mph and then 2 hours at 12 mph, you will not get as good a work out as if you do all that time at 16 mph.

But again you have to decide what your goals are: recovery, fat burning, cardio, endurance, stamina, strength....

At the Gym... Good or bad workouts?

livestrong spin bike image

Sugar mami

Good morning!

I have recently signed up to the gym. I wanted to go and just loose a little bit of weight... So... On Saturday and sunday I went to see how it was... I did >>>>

30 minutes on the bicycle which burned 180 Calories
10 on Walking machine (VERY BORING) which burnt 50 Calories
5 minutes just doing 100 of the Hip adduction (when your push in) and 100 of where you push out lol. (Sorry if I am not making any sense lol)
Then Another
15 minutes on the Bicycle (which burnt another 100 calories)

DAY 2 (Sunday)
1 hour on the Bicycle which I burnt 300 Calories
10 mins on Cross Trainer (lol too hard so 10 minutes was all I could do) but burnt 100 calories in those 10 minutes... which is amazing lol! Considering it took me 1 hour to burn 300 on the bicycle!!

I don't want to gain muscle though... :( what do I do? someone told me if i use the bicycle I will just gain muscle and not loose the weight? :( is this true?
also with the exercise I was doing do you think that it was ok for first time? and do you think If i done that 3 or 4 times a week that i would start to loose some weight??

THANKS X X

Answer
If you want to lose weight the first thing you need to do before you even think about going to the gym is start tracking your calories. Weight loss is at its most basic is about eating less calories then the body requires, but you all have to ensure you get enough calories. Ideally you should aim for between 1000 and 1500, but certaintly no lower than 1000 calories. This should be food eaten minus exercise.

If you don't want to build muscle there's no point doing exercises using weight machines, as their entire point is to build muscle. You can't spot reduce fat, so if you are using them thinking they'll reduce your hip fat then it's a waste of time.

You need to focus on using cardio exercise machines, like the bike, cross trainer, and running machines. Cross training machines are very good, as they require more effort, which burns more calories. Don't think you can just sit on an exercise bike and spin your legs around at the lowest setting and burn a decent amount of calories, you need to do exercise that makes your heart beat faster and makes you sweat, otherwise you might as well just go for a long walk.

Whether or not doing it 3 or 4 times a week will help you lose weight depends entirely on your calorie intake, so again, you need to start tracking your calories, something you can do on one of the following sites:

http://www.sparkpeople.com/
http://www.calorieking.com.au/

How do I customize my Diamondback bmx bike?

what is the best spinning bike on the market image

Tyler P

I have a stock Diamondback '04 Grind bmx bike and I want to customize it to a good flatland bmx. Can someone please tell me what kind of sprockets, wheels, forks, etc. I should put on it? Thanks

Answer
A new Flatland bmx will set you back between US$350 and US$2,000... depending on how good you want your parts to be. Obviously, the $2,000 bike will come with the best parts on the market today. Here's an example... http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1311
At the cheaper end, you have the beginner-orientated bike, which has low-end parts, but good to start out with. Here's an example .. http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1124

As a rule of thumb, the more expensive a bike or part is, the lighter it will be, over the cheaper parts. When it comes to Flatland, a light bike is usually better, and will allow you to develop your skills a lot faster, and let you ride longer, without getting as tired as you would if you were riding a street bike for Flatland.

So in saying all that, here are your options...

1: Buy all new flatland parts for your current frame. http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=2
This option will set you back around $1000-1200, but keep in mind, your frame is way heavier than any flatland frame on the market, so you will more than likely switch to a flatland frame soon enough. If ur outlaying all that money for new parts, throw in the extra $300 and get urself a nice Flatland frame while ur at it... http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=26

2) If ur on a budget, spending thousands on a bike might not be such a good idea, and since ur new to Flatland, you might wanna get a good beginners bike, and then upgrade ur parts as you feel you need to, or can afford to. This way, you have a frame that you can stick with for years, without needing to upgrade. A good example of this kind of bike is this one... http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1322 or this one... http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1331
That last one is a beginner bike, but the same bike, with pro-range parts on it, looks like this... http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1309, which is something you can turn the 'beginner bike' into, with some extra money.

You can still ride Flat on a street bike, if you change a few parts, it will just not be as 'smooth' and easy as riding a flatland bike. Heres what you will need to do to your current bike if you wanna make it more of a flat-bike...
- Get a longer seat post, around 300mm, and set it to max. height, as noted on the bottom of the post.
- Get minimal or zero offset forks, to make front wheel tricks way easier. They allow u to pop up onto the front wheel so eaisly.
- Put pegs on, all round.
- Be sure to have a gyro set up for back brakes
- Put a shorter reach stem on. Anywhere from 26mm-40mm.
- Get tyres no wider than 1.95, and make sure they're high-psi. For flatland, 120psi is super smooth for spinning and rolling.
- If you really wanna lighten ur bike without spending much, take the cranks off. You'll save about 2 kilos, and you can do a lot of tricks without needing to pedal. It's not a popular option, but it's a cheaper one.

So there are some options for you. The main deciding factor for people buying a Flatland bike, is budget. I splurged and bought pro-everything when I build mine, so I knew nothing was going to hold me back from learning, except myself. Right now, there is 10% off on all parts and bikes from the site I've posted links to, so now is the time to buy... you'll save a packet.
Email me if you have any more questions about any of this. :)

What are the pros and cons on a 2 stroke/4 stroke dirt bike?

Marlbobama

I used to own 2 stroke bikes, but that was many years ago before 4 strokes were widely on the market. What are the advantages/disadvantages?

Answer
The only real advantage to a 2 stroke is weight, that's it. There is really nowhere else a 2 stroke has any advantage. In response to what the first person said, a 4 stroke actually has way more torque than a 2 stroke. So in a nut shell, it's like this. A 2 stroke makes it's power in a smaller part of the power band and because of this the power comes on more abruptly which leads to wheel spin. This is fun for the non-racer that is just playing around. It's fun when you can grab a handful of throttle and have the back tire spinning and throwing rocks, etc., but spinning wheels do not win races. On a track the 2 stroke gets dominated by the 4 stroke for that very reason. First off since the 2 stroke is lacking low end, the 4 stroke will pull stronger out of a tight corner, Then after the power does start to come on with the 2 stroke you have to deal with lack of traction due to the abrupt power delivery. So basically it's like this. If you want to compete in MX/SX you can either race a 4 stroke or lose, it's just that simple. If you are riding for fun, a 250/300 2 stroke can be a lot of fun and some of them do very well in the woods. They are also very fun on a track as long as you don't expect to win on it.

i am getting a dog and wanted to know which is better in your opinions. what do i want in a dog? by want i mean need lol. i want an active dog (as i am VERY active myself), i want a smart dog (i need challenges too! ;D ), i want a dog that loves to go on walks and runs (i do cross country at school in september then it stops, so i need to stay in shape all year around ;P ), i want to be able to walk without a leash (allie and misa do so it's not hard to teach for me), want a dog that loves swimming (we have a big pool, but if the chlorine does anything - by the way it wouldn't even be until june in the summer then i'll get it it's own pool). i will do everything an active dog needs as that is everything i need too. i picked these breeds because i find they have everything alike with what i like! i love to run, i love to swim, i love to play, i love to learn, i love new things, i love challenges, i love dogs, and i love my parents. :) <3
i don't want the dog as a guard dog, but if needed it would be inside and not fully, not even half. allie (14 pound schnoodle that turns 2 feb 22nd 2012) acts like a guard dog, but she's pretty small. misa (a fully grown - now - 6 pound pomeranian chihuahua that turned 5 months on dec 6th 2011) is very small. they are the family dogs, and my parents (stepmom and dad because my mom and stepdad can't have pets - my mom doesn't like cleaning after them and my stepdad is allergic to all animals - but it would be at my dad and stepmoms since we are there more) said i can get my own pet if i earn it, if i pay some money (i can earn it from shovelling snow, doing chores, anything that needs to be done)
and if i clean after it, bathe it when needed, take it on long walks and runs at the dog park and school (school is about 1km perim. and path in front is about the same length), feed it, give it water, train it (basics and extras - like allie can walk without leash same with misa, allie knows car, van, truck -we have a truck for my dad, a car for my stepmom, and a van for my dad when he goes to work so his truck doesn't get messy or dirty- she knows upstairs, downstairs, get down, go lie down, come (without command, only when we snap our fingers), faster, heel, wait (i tought her faster heel and wait, and some others, but i tought her those ones myself and i'm the only one that commands her those since no one else knows but me :D ), food (when we call her for food), pool (she swims sometimes in the summer maybe once a week), oopy, al, (her nicknames from me, i call her allie oup -like how people say ALLIEOUP! when they jump in a pool? lol. anyways:...). she doesn't really know shake a paw or hi 5 nothing like that because we never thought about her knowing that. but the aussie or border would (whichever i get) know all of the above, basics, and probably agility things with body -ie. weave (weaves through legs), frog (when you stick out your tounge and your dog mocks you lol i find that one cute), bang! (plays dead when you put your finger shaped like a gun and say bang then they fall down playing dead lol adorable), roll over (hand signal and command), get your tail (when you pretend to throw a frizbee and the dog pretends the tail is the frizbee), come here (finger movement when you pull your finger back like saying come here but with your finger?), kiss (when you put your mouth up to the dog, say kiss and the dog licks you), stand (stands on hind legs), high 5 (high five), standing high five (stands on hind legs while hi fiving), speak (say speak and the dog barks), count (lifts paw once when you say one, lifts it twice when you say two, etc), up (to jump into your arms on cue when you lift your arm up and say up), dance (i tought misa dance - it's when you put your finger up say dance when you have a treat in your hand make sure the dog can see it, and then the dog stands on its hind legs and walks backwards to dance then spins), sad (when you frown and say sad the dog puts their head heavily on the bed, your lap, your hand, or the couch near you if you're sitting on either, or whereever you are sitting, like a therapy dog does sustained chin), give me a beat (i wanted to create this one, it's when you say "give me a beat" and the dog drums on the ground dum dum dum dum in a rythym, then when you say "cut!" they stop), and fetch (everyone knows fetch is just throwing a ball or frizbee and the dog chases after it grabbing it lol).
SORRY FOR HOW LONG THIS IS!!!! :/ (not yelling, just so people can see)
so guys, please put your opinions, feel free to list your favourite dogs, your favourite tricks, maybe some tricks i didn't list that you think are cool, if you think i'd be a good owner to one of these dogs, and which one i should get. btw i'm 13 so i still go to school for 6 hours a day then i'm home the rest but if i go out the dogs would come. and no i won't neglect allie and

Answer
PHEW! I got through most of it, but dropped dead when you made your hand look like a gun...

You should look into adopting from ARPH Aussie Rescue.
There are some lovely dogs waiting for homes, all up to the task.
A Border Collie is more apt to be focused on a ball, and not on you - Aussies want to be in you, not just with you - they become a part of your mind. Once you have an Aussies, it will change your outlook on all other dogs. Sounds arrogant, but it's true. It's usually a profound experience.

Aussies were bred to be a replacement for a farmhand - so they are a bonded working partner. BC's are focused on long distance work, not the master, and while they listen for commands, they do not ahve eye contact with anything but a tennis ball or sheep (or cars or bikes or cats...).

Aussies are more often than not brilliant and love to learn tricks and tasks - so you will go far with one. Consider doing something like freestyle, which will keep you both more than busy.

Washing machine sounds like it's slamming against something inside when it agitates?

Bees Nest

My washing machine is making a loud banging noise when it agitates like it's hitting something inside. I washed a heavy chenille rug in the washing machine and I had to stop the spin cycle because it was severely out of balance. I was quick, but apparently not quick enough to prevent damage because when I started the next load, it started making a loud banging noise with each agitation back and forth. It kinda sounds like something is loose or broken inside, which prevents the agitation in each direction from stopping on time and it's hitting something. It spins fine though.

Please don't say "Call a repairman." because that's obvious and useless advice. I'm unemployed and not even getting by. I'm pretty handy and want to attempt to fix it myself first if possible. Anyone care to give a diagnostic, and if possible, let me know if it's a do-it-yourself job for a fairly mechanically inclined woman? If I know what it is, I'm sure I can look up the fix it online.

Thanks
It's not out of balance now, and this happened about a month ago, so something obviously broke when it went out of balance. It happens with every load and is continuous through the agitation cycle.
It's a Kenmore 600 Series
The clothes are distributed evenly; it's not a balance issue. I've never had problems before this incident with it off balance, and it happens with every load. There is something wrong with the machine, not the operator. I've been doing laundry 25+ yrs.

Answer
Its probably the dog aggits or worse case the basket block. Two easy tests you can do for each with it empty try turning the auger aka post in the middle left and jerk it quickly to the right. Do that several times HARD! If it doesnt catch immediatly going right then you have bad dog aggits and it requires you to take off the top cap, just pull at an angle and it comes right off. Then reach down inside and remove the aggits see threw lid, might take some hard yanks. Rachet with a 8 inch extension and 7/16" socket to undo the bolt, pull auger out (two pieces will probably seperat and you only need the top have. Replace the dogs as old one are and reinsert back together making sure you line up the two little white tabs that helds the aggits cam in place. If one breaks no big deal. Alwso make sure you clean out all broken pieces! But if that tests pass throw a loads of towels in and fill it up then switch to fast spin and when in fast spin with all towels still heavy open the lid. You'll know if its the basket block then because itll sound like a train coming at you. This would require a repair man as it takes a special spanner nut tool to remove it. Unless you can find that for cheap and you tube video on how to. Either way dogs are about 6 bucks for a set and blocks and nuts are about 20. Repair guys and parts about 170-200.

Does anyone know what the problem could be -- and how I can fix it?

If not, who would be able to fix it? Since I bought it used, I don't have any repair or service information. (I live in the Chicago area now.)

Any bike shop should be able to fix it for you. The other guy that posted does not realize this is an exercise bike and not a normal bike so it doesn't have derailleurs . If i had to guess id say the problem is with the crank.

How can I match beats per minute of music to indoor cycyling cadence?

funinsun

(The spin bikes at my gym have cadence displays on them). If my song is 120 bpm should my cadence also be 120?

Also, how do I determine my running cadence? Do I count strides in a minute?

Answer
Use a watch with a second hand you want to count your knee coming up 12-15 times in ten seconds. Match your running to your fitness level cadence is not important in running. Run hard enough that you do not get out of breath. The cadence in cycling is so you don't pedal to hard and it's more efficient.

I brought a new blackburn delphi 4.0 cycling computer, doesn't say how to turn it off. it goes into sleep mode after about 30 mins, and then i left it for 3 hours and still doesn't. When i take out the batteries, the settings all re-set...

Any help please?

Answer
I have never seen a bike computer that you can turn off. The older ones I've had just stayed at the last setting they were on. I have a specialized computer that has been in my bike parts drawer that shows 0 MPH and the odometer setting when I took it off the bike 3 or 4 years ago. My new ones seem to just switch to a time clock until the wheel spins again and they wake up. As this one is a wireless it probably has an algorithm to check for radio signals so it is never really totally off. I wouldn't worry about it unless you are eating batteries every few months. I think most wireless computers are good for about a year with their batteries.

How to go fast on a road bike?

DaDude

I just purchased my first road bike. Nothing special, a GT Series 4. I was just wondering what tactics are used to get up to a high speed and stay at a high speed. People say get in a high gear, but does that mean more resistance or less resistance? What gears should I use, the big one or the little one?

Answer
Real simple... Always pedal in a gear that's easy to "spin" using moderate pedal pressure at the most. When it becomes too easy - up-shift. When it starts to become difficult - downshift.

Speed will come with practice. What good is high gear if you're straining or mashing on the pedals so hard, your guts & leg muscles are busting?

Get a cycle computer if needed that tells "cadence". Keep between 70 - 90 rpm. You'll soon find your own optimal cadence. Pros cycle at a higher cadence than that even.
