I exercise sporadically (can do a few times a week for a few weeks then go days or weeks without & start the cycle again). I want to exercise almost daily (at least 5 times a week) to get my heart into shape but the excuses keep coming up.
Don't like 2 exercise in public by self (feel embarrassed) and don't know anyone 2 workout with like this, not much room in the house 2 do a lot (but I do exercise 2 fit tv at times), can't do at night when there's a free class at a local church (have other obligations can't get out of), don't have much money for gym membership (which would be the best thing for me I think, especially if it's competitive with encouragement). I live in a country-hick type city where I don't think it would be safe on the streets & there's not much going on exercise wise.
Motivated by 90s+ dance music (when I used to be really into exercise). I like dancing, gymnastics, etc. but there's no room for the kind I like. Are there free/cheap clubs out there? Suggestions?

Answer
Simply buy a home fitness equipment and work on it like 45 min a session every other day.

Your money will be well spent, you just do your aerobics in private...

Just pick the one you like. I like the stepper and rowing machine myself, if they are not available, I run on the treadmill in the gym. (if you get one of those machines, you will not have to face the same problem - to line up in the gym LOL) How to keep the habit? If you do it regularly, it becomes a habit, if it's a habit, you don't have to keep it, habits are hard to break otherwise it's not called a habit... LOL

Aerobic classes (alternatively, dance to a DVD)
Biking (outdoors... not your cup of tea)
Biking (indoors, also called spinning)
Dancing (even to the radio!)
Jogging (outside or on the treadmill, or brisk walking)
Stairmaster (or running up and down stairs but make sure the stairs are "safe" for this purpose)
Running (outside or on the treadmill)
Rowing (indoor or on the river)
Skipping (jumping rope) â¦

...and there are many others... just be sure to start slowly and work your goal up to 20-30 minutes 3 days a week [it is necessary to keep your heart rate up, which helps burn stored fat] each day for whatever exercise you choose. In order to get the most benefit and the most fat loss, it is important to keep up the activity for at least 20-30 minutes

AND keep your heart rate up...REMEMBER YOUR TARGET HEART RATE IS 220 [minus] (Your Age) = Target Heart Rate [This number is the highest rate your heart should beat per minute during intense exercise...

However, you should try to keep your heart rate around 70-80% of that number during the whole workout]...

â¦you can do it, just give yourself some time. It does take time! Make sure you keep your diet in check too!"

What is a good workout routine?

asha083190

I'm not fat I just want to tone my abs, legs, and butt.

Answer
there are millions to choose from!

you could take up a class, such as dancing, yoga, pilates or a general workout class like aerobics, spinning or step aerobics.

you could invest in some workout DVD's and get fit in the comfort of your own home.

you can dig out your running shoes or bike and just generally get active.

you could book a one of session with a personal trainer at a gym who will design a workout routine especially for you.

remember to change your workout regularly though, so your body does not become used to it!

Flying from England to Australia, i need help!!!?

I've been before.

The A380 or what ever, does it in 1 trip. flying east across europe, like every other flight right?

Well if the plane is trying to catch up to australia, because the earth spins anti-clock wise ( i think), why don't we just fly america way?

because then the earth is spinning and wouldn't the speed of the plane double? Because the horizon moves at something like 500miles per hour? and the plane goes 500-600miles per hour. therefore cutting journy time down from 22hours to like 11-12 hours?

Answer
nooo. that doesnt work. thats not true. the earth spins, yes, and the plane travelling the same direction as the earths rotation doesnt mean it is going to go backwards if it is travelling slower than the earth. the planes speed, if you want to add in the earths rotation. is the speed of the plane plus the speed the earth is rotating at. (in the same direction of course).. its like being on a bike, boat, in a car, or any moving form of transport, and throwing a ball or other object in front of you while going forwards on the mode of transport. the speed the ball is travelling is the speed of the vehicle AND the speed at which you threw it. this also relates to the theory of relativity. whether you are on the vehicle throwing the ball, or watching someone throw it from outside the vehicle. because relative to each person is a different outcome or speed and travel distance, look, etc.. i remember asking my grade 6 teacher this same thing when i was like 11. LOL :P

what is a good bmx bike to get?

Nick

i am 5"11 and want a bmx bike for park. i want brakes, i want to be able to do barspins, and i would. also like it to be around $600. please help!!!
thanks in advance!

Answer
Don't go with Haro, they're almost Walmart quality. most young riders are going with Kink, Fit, WTP, or if ur in Australia... Colony bikes.
$600 should get you a pretty good light bike. If you want to be able to do bar-spins, you will either need a bike with no back brake and the front brake cable running down through the stem and out the bottom of the fork steerer tube, or you want a bike with back brakes and a gyro attached on the stem, which will allow you to spin the bars without any of the cables tangling up.

I just got a spinning bike and i have decided to lose weight again. I rode today and I rode for 45 minutes with no problem. (How many times a week and how long each time should I cycle to lose weight?) I need to lose around 100 pounds. I will be eating healthy and drinking water too.

Answer
oh have i got the thing for you, MEGA-T pills i bought mine at walmart. the help straighten your system out so your body loses the weight it should. i swear by them i use them and i also have a 100 lbs. to lose:(...i done got so big it is hard to walk and get all the exrecise i need.i just hurt all over. well i took these pills, my scales are broke so i went by my measuring tape. one of those sewing ones. measured my stomach at its biggest point. then started the pills. 3 days later someone said i just seen you the other day, but now you have lost some weight what did u do. i forgot about the pills i said nothing.just thought they were messing with me.when i got home i remembered i was taking the pills so i measured myself again. i had lost 43 inches off my stomach in 4 days.it really freaked me out..well i took 2 a day one at 6am and 1 pill at 3pm cause i didn't want to be up all night if thats what these pills would do. you never know.i was fine. had to stay close to the bathroom for 3 days. but after that everything calmed down.my waist started at 52 inches. i am now at 46 inchs. i ram out of the pills a week after i started them,my husband and i was both taking them. so i said i want to see how fast i gain it back. i haven't. it has been 3 weeks since i ran out. and yes i plan on getting me some more this week.with those and exercise you will lose a lot of weight but dont take more than they recommend please. and read up on the stuff in the pills.i even had pitting in my legs and ankels, and it took all my water retention out. i feel great.and i am ready t feel better.so mega-t green tea pills.i think i paid 6.97 for mine.and the exercise bike. the more you speed your heart rate up for a few minutes then let it go back down, then up again. will help your metabolisim. also you can try niacin. that is suppose to help your matabolisim, but becareful. just one pill. cause you always want to just start slow with something new. see how your body does. good luck. sorry so long.

Should I get a fixed gear bike or a Trek Road bike?

best entry level spinning bike on Triathlon Bike Shoes
best entry level spinning bike image

Help

Im trying to decide if I should get a Trek 1.1 road bike or a really nice fixed gear bike. What are the advanteges and disadvanteges.

Answer
To be honest, I would never buy a fixed gear bike if you could help it. It really limits everything you can do with the bike. To name a few of the problems: It only has 1 spinning speed (meaning once you hit a certain speed, it is very uncomfortable to continue pedaling. Think of going down hill in first gear, feels like the chain is off the hook.), you can't tackle hills very well, you can't attain higher coasting speeds for group rides, etc.

My fiance and I both just recently bought Trek 1.1s. (Men's and women's) They are a good entry level bike that won't break the bank, but give you a good feeling of the sport. There are several problems with the Trek 1.1 if you are speaking from an experienced rider standpoint, but you probably couldn't tell me what they were until you knew more. (It is an aluminum fork instead of carbon fiber. A new biker can't really tell the difference. The shifters are on the higher position so you can't change gears down in your more aggressive stance. Again, a new biker probably wouldn't even know you could have gears in your lower stance. Things like that.)

All in all? Trek 1.1 is a good entry level bike. If you are willing to spend a little bit more cash, you should probably get the Trek 1.2. A lot of the things I mentioned above, are "fixed" in the 1.2. However, you are spending maybe an additional $200 to get a carbon frame and better gear shifting positions. If you don't think that is worth it as a newbie? Don't worry about it.

The biggest thing I can tell you, is to get biker shorts. Also, learn how to ride properly before judging the comfort level of the seat. Many people will go out and ride it and say that the seat is garbage, or it is too hard, or that its cheap. They don't understand that road bike seats aren't meant for comfort. The padding is in the shorts, so get a good pair of shorts. Also, when cycling, you need to be in a more forward stance. The weight should be on your arms and legs, not on your tailbone/butt. Also, of course you will just have to get used to it. Your butt will be sore for a bit until you get used to it.

Hope this helps.

I have a couple questions about getting a fixed gear bike?

I Wish I W

question 1) if i do decide to put a hand brake on my bike, if im not mistaken that makes it impossible to do bar spins after someone does that yes?

question 2) I live in ohio in a city area so its pretty flat, but we also have our fair share of hills, would you recommend a fixed gear bike for this type of geography?

Answer
1) Yes...a front brake will make it impossible to do bar spins.

2) "...would you recommend a fixed gear bike for this type of geography?" Nope. Even if the terrain around you was perfectly flat, I still wouldn't recommend a fixed gear. You can't start quickly. You can't stop quickly. And Lord help you riding into a stiff headwind.

Fixed gear bikes belong on a Velodrome track. Most of them are indoor tracks, away from the wind, hills, traffic & any need to start or stop quickly. Besides...a "good" fixed gear bike can cost just as much or MORE than an entry level road bike. Links below. Try not to get sticker shock at the prices. Especially the one from Specialized. This is a true "track bike".

Starting to work out - recumbent style stationary bike?

I haven't worked out in years (though I'm relatively thin) and am starting to get back into it. I went on the stationary bike (recumbent style - pedaling from a reclined position) for about 50 minutes yesterday with a good resistance and I felt it was a decent workout...today my legs weren't sore at ALL and I'm wondering - did I do something wrong? Is it even worth it to go on a bike like that if my muscles aren't even sore?

Answer
My wife lost almost a hundred pounds on stationary recumbent.

Here's the thing... You are not striving for muscle soreness... That just means you're overtraining. Any stationary machine like this is an "aerobic" activity. It's working your cardiovascular system; heart, lungs, circulatory system. It's burning calories.
The idea is to get your heart rate up into your "training zone"... 65-75% of your maximum heart rate, and to do that for at least 20 minutes.
Are you monitoring your heart rate during your sessions? If not, you need to . If you're not getting into the training zone:

http://www.topendsports.com/fitness/heartrate-range.htm

then you're not working hard enough. Strive for more rpm rather than more resistance... "Spinning" rather than "mashing" as we say. You recover better.

Remember as well that this isn't doing much at all for your upper body.... You may consider throwing some upper-body work into your workout mix.

Lose 45 pounds in 7 months how can i make this possible plz help:)?

Hi im 21 im 192 pounds id like to be 145-150 by the time my husband comes home from Afghanistan. I just started going to the gym im been there every day this week did 1-2 miles onon the tread mill and eating 1400 cal a day plus small wrkouts what else can i add to reach my goal thanks in advance.

Answer
Well, you'll have some harder work to do but its possible... Go get a quick check-up with your doctor first to see if that could cause any damage to you (that's a lot of weight for 7 months) just check and make sure that you're ok to start with this workout plan cus I'm gonna give you an idea of one.

1-2 miles on a treadmill honestly won't do to much for you right now if you're going for more of a speedy loss. I suggest that you start using a spin bike at first to prevent any injuries until you get back into the groove of things seeing as you just started mild injuries like shin splints, rolled/twisted ankles, pulled muscles or other strains. Just until you get back up with your endurance.

There are tons of different exercises and different styles of exercising that you could try. For me personally I do about 40-60min on my spin bike, then 20+min of weights and some core and balance exercises so it's between an hour to two hours.
For you since you're beginning I'd start with an easy stretch, probably about 10min worth of yoga exercises, here's a couple pages of exercises:
http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/workout/yoga/poses/
http://www.abc-of-yoga.com/yogapractice/postures.asp
Then move on to about 30min of walking on the treadmill, you could go for 3-5min intervals of running every 8-10min, or you could try 30min on a spin bike switching between higher and low resistance OR you could try a rowing machine like this: http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/images/layout/custom/rowing/WaterRower.gif that would work your whole body, legs for pushing across the rail, arms for pulling, lats for pulling, abs for leaning back and around, overall body cus its cardio
The best thing to do would be to switch around your exercises every day, but still with a base of cardio. Ex. you could do the yoga warm up, then one of the 3 cardio options, then try working on your legs for one day, then the next will be arms to give your legs a bit of a rest, then core for another day, then take a relax day of 30min of yoga (15min before and after) and 30min of one of the cardio options.
Here's a list of basic weight machines that gyms have: http://www.fitnessbliss.com/en/screenshots/images/equipment.gif they usually have directions on the side, if you don't know exactly how to use it, make a list of machines at your gym, then look up how to use them properly so you won't risk injury. Just make sure you stretch after, the same yoga poses for about 10min will do fine.

Other things I'd try would be to cut gluten (no wheat) and dairy from your diet even if you're not gluten intolerant or lactose intolerant. Gluten can actually cause the layer of fat in your body to retain more water. The more water you drink, the better it'll be to flush your system. Try to cut down on sugar and high fat foods. Introduce lean protein into your diet, it'll help build up your muscle cus more muscle helps burn fat!

Good for you for getting back out there and setting goals for yourself! Oh and congratulations on your husband coming home :)

I have a full round butt and have been doing squats. What else can i do to make it more firm and lifted? Also i have "fat" under my buttcheeks like in the photos in this link http://www.realself.com/review/lapex-lipolaser-small-results-lot-money how can i get rid of them?
Just to be more clear. That is not me in the photos, its a photo i found similar to my situation, like i said "like in the photos in this link" i would never go under the knife for something minor like that. Which is why i would like to simply improve my butt with simple exercises.

Answer
The right cardio exercise and weight training activities (like squats
and deadlifts) can make a difference in your backside and help you get
those buns of steel. Find out the best cardio and strength training
exercises for strengthening and firming up your rear.
1. Squats.
Squats are one of the best exercises you can do for your hips, butt
and thighs. Stand with feet hip-width apart and squat, keeping back
straight, abs in and knees behind your toes. Let your butt lightly
touch chair and squeeze butt to stand up. Repeat for 2-3 sets of 8-12
reps and add weights for more intensity.
2. Lunges. Stand in a split
stance, with feet about 3 feet apart. You want both knees to be at
about 90-degree angles at the bottom of the movement, so adjust
accordingly. Hold weights in each hand (or place a barbell behind the
neck) for added intensity. Bend the knees and lower the back knee
toward the floor, keeping the front heel down and the knee directly
over the centre of the foot. Keep the torso straight and abs in as you
push through the front heel and back to starting position. Don't lock
the knees at the top of the movement. Perform 1 to 3 sets of 10 to 16
reps according to your fitness level and goals.
3. Step Ups. For step
ups, you simply place one foot on a step or platform and push through
the heel onto the step. This is an excellent exercise for the glutes.
4. Hip Extensions. Lie on the floor with feet propped on the ball,
legs straight. Keeping abs tight, slowly lift your hips off the floor
(squeezing the buttocks) until body is in a straight line. Hold for a
few seconds and lower, repeating 10 to 15 times.
5. One-Legged Deadlifts. You should skip this exercise if you
have any back problems. To do this move, take the left leg back just a bit, lightly
resting on the toe. With the weights in front of the thighs, tip from
the hips and lower the weights as low as your flexibility allows. Keep
your back flat or with a natural arch and make sure you keep the abs
contracted to protect the back. Squeeze the glutes of the working leg
to raise back up. Do 2-3 sets of 8-12 reps.
6. Hiking. Now the
exercises listed above aren't the only strength moves for the glutes,
but we often forget that there are cardio activities that will also
engage the backside. Hiking is one of those activities and it also
burns tons of calories. Also, walking up an incline automatically gets
your glutes more involved and, if you're wearing a backpack, you're
really getting a workout. A 140-lb person burns about 390 calories in
about an hour!
7. Biking. Riding a bike is great for your heart and it
also targets almost every muscle in your hips, thighs and butt. On a
stationary bike, alternate 3 minutes at 70-80 RPM with 2 minutes at
100-110 RPM for a calorie-blasting 30 minute workout. You can also try
Spinning at the gym or riding outside. Gear up to really work your
glutes! A 140-lb person burns 335 calories in 45 minutes.
8. Running. Running, like walking, is accessible, easy to learn, reduces stress,
helps in weight loss, and it makes you feel good. Plus, it really
works your butt, especially when you add a few hills to your regular
running route. A 140-lb person burns 475 calories during a 45 minute
jog.
9. Kickboxing. Kickboxing was a hot item back in the day, but it's
still a great workout. Controlled kicks work your hips, thighs and
butt while complex combinations that include punches will target your
abs to make them stronger. A 140-lb woman will burn up to 500 calories
with 45 minutes of kickboxing.
10. Walking. Walking is easy: you can do
it anywhere, anytime with no special equipment. There's no learning
curve and it's something you can incorporate all day long. If you walk
up hills, you can really target your glutes and, if you pick up the
intensity, you'll burn some of that extra flab off your buns! A 140-lb
person burns about 300 calories an hour during a brisk walk.

Does a mountain bike ride differently than a folding bike?

best quality spinning bike on spin cycle bike images - best spin cycle bike photos from ...

Rita

Would I get the same work out with the folding bike, though its smaller. Are there folding bikes that change speed?
Do the smaller wheels make a difference?

Answer
You'll still get a good workout either way. The smaller wheels lose their inertia quicker, so it takes more effort to maintain a steady speed. But the smaller wheels "spin up" to speed easier than the big, heavy mtb wheels. Maybe more important is the tread pattern. If you ride an mtb with off-road tires, that'll slow you down a lot compared to smoother tires of most folders. (You can get smooth tires for mtbs, though.) So that's more of a workout again.

The reason to get a folding bike is storage space, or less cost when traveling by plane with it. The best reason to get an mtb is, you're planning on riding off-road with it (and I don't mean paved bike trails or sidewalks.) Get the style of bike that suits your particular needs. What's more important, that it takes up less space when not being ridden, or that you can "shred" in the great outdoors with it? There's a reason there's 31 Flavors!

And, yes, there are folding bikes that change speeds. The new Shimano internal hubs are common on these, less so the much pricier but higher quality Rohloff hubs from Germany.

What (non competitive)bikes do you recommend for a short woman?

whit92

I am 5 foot 1. I was looking online at a 26in folding bike, but I haven't been on a bike in years, I don't know if that is too big for me. I also don't want to spend a lot of money on the bike. I would use the bike to get around my neighborhood, nothing serious.

Answer
whit

I would never suggest a folder for a rider. Short woman or tall man. Is your concern that the bike will be too big? Whether a 26 or larger wheel, they make bike for our height. They design the bike around the wheels, and then cut the tubes for the various sized riders who will ride them. The one advantage f getting a 26 inch wheel for you is the fact that it will spin up to speed easier than a larger wheel, yet still have good rolling qualities. Smaller wheels may be easier to roll up to speed, but their rolling characteristics suck.

The only reason to get a folder would be for a specific reason ... a commuter to keep on the train, a marina bike to store on a boat. It would never be my bike of choice for a serious rider. A good hybrid bike would be my bike of choice for you.

Answer
Diet is more important then any exercise when it comes to losing weight. Exercise tones muscles if you do it right " low resistance " will just waste your time. It's not what you eat its how much. You want to start walking if you need to stand on your feet. Running is even better walk, run, walk, run. Cycling will help tone muscles that running doesn't use.

Start out with an easy 10 min warm up and then pedal at 70-90 rpm with just enough resistance to get you breathing elevated. You should be sweating after 15-20 min if you are doing it right. Watch TV and crank it up a little during the commercials.

I could get one of those stands for the rear tire(i don't know the name). But if I do get the stand is it the same thing as a spin bike? That way I can ride it outside when I want. If it is the same with the stand, how much is the stand?

Answer
I, and most cyclist here will say a bike on a TRAINER is the best. Trainers are fairly cheap many $100 to $150. But the bike of your choice. I recommend buying a cheap smooth tire for the back wheel, it works much better that way and won't wear out your knobbie tire.

Here's on of many sites you can get them from, and it being end of winter they are on sale: http://www.nashbar.com/index.cfm

Fluid and mag trainers are preferred. You can buy a reasonalble bike and trainer for the same cost as a good spinning bike and get much more use out it like you said.

What is a good starter road bike for a first triatholon?

best position for spinning bike on ... bike and rider on the light green mottled background. The orange bike
best position for spinning bike image
Q. Im training for my first triatholon and am looking for a good road bike for the riding portion. I have been training on a stationary bike at the gym and am needing to get some miles done on a road bike. Ive looked at some local, Houston Tx, bike shops and the prices are well over what I want to spend on a bike. Any suggestions on brands and dealers would be great.

Answer
Ebay! Start with bikes 4 years and older, aluminum, at least 10 speeds. Riding in a Tri is a lot like riding a century. Bike fit and comfort are more important than saving weight. If your position and pedal stroke are comfortable to you, chances are they're more efficient as well.

Then, invest in a set of Tri Aero Bars.. around 60 bucks, and practice with them. More than you think you should! If you wait till the day of your triathlon, you'll dump, wipe, face plant, or hurt someone else the first time you get the wobbles. Make sure you're riding intervals and sprints, not just long distance, low effort spins on an exercise bike.

Anything by one of the larger cycle manufacturers will suit you fine as long as you're comfortable with the bike, it has a big gear you can spin for an hour at high speed, and you rack up the seat time in prep for race day. Good Luck!

And to the Chris S below me.. I agree seem like they are a purely optional expediture, but I have found that they come in very handy when resting your arms and shoulders before or after a long swim. My Veloton group actually restricts their use in TT due to 2 or 3 guys riding aero bars in a paceline last year. A direct result of poor planning on the part of the organizers, but needless to say, that particular group ended up with a broken clavicle, a broken collarbone, three green-stick arm fractures, and yards of road rash!

Also, Have to ditto the shoes and pedals. Most of all though, be comfortable. Dont buy new gear the day before your Tri. If you havent trained in or on it, chances are it will just hurt you.

There are 3 approaches to having a faster bike:
1. Shave bike weight by using components of more lightweight materials like titanium or carbon fiber. This is an expensive alternative.
You can also lighten your wheels by using road tires. These are lighter. Matching the tires to your rims may need professional (local bike shop) intervention. A road tire that does not match its rim can slip off.
2. Alter the sizes of your chainrings and cogset. You can use a road bike's crankset. These are larger and thus will transmit faster linear speed, but will require more pedalling effort to accelerate. Also, these usually come with only 2 chainrings. You'd have to adjust your front derailleur accordingly. The shifter will then have one dead speed. Or you can replace your front derailleur and shifter set with an appropriate road version instead.
You can change your cogset to one with the smallest cog having 11 teeth. This will also make your rear wheel spin faster.
3. Become a stronger rider. Lose weight; strengthen your lower body.

Definitely you can't change the size of your wheel to a larger one without changing your frame and fork and chain and cables and...

The next larger wheel size is 29", the same size as that of a road bike. Maybe you need a road bike instead. But if you prefer the more upright riding position and the better standover clearance of a MTB (or an ATB as what it's usually called in your country), then it may make sense to purchase a complete 29-er rig.

I looked up your bike. The componentry is already very good if you only use it for commuting. If you are in a situation that limits you to owning only your current Marin, changing to skinny road tires is the best alternative. Or you can look at it this way: not going so fast on a country road affords you more opportunity to take in the sights.

"I bought this bike after a trip to my local bike shop. I told them I was looking for something good for all around but nothing race oriented that would be good to get back into biking and get me out for some exercise.

So far this bike has made me want to get out and bike more. I've done anywhere from 5 to 45 miles per outing and have been on pavement, dirt and gravel, cinder paths and all out mud and muck. I'm just starting out but can easily spin the bike 15-18mph up moderate hills and it felt solid on a 38+ mph descent down the back half of a rather steep hill climb.

The last ride that sold me was a 40 mile trip around a lake in the thousand islands that was 30 miles on-road and then 10 miles of absolutely, what was I thinking off-roading. This thing pulled me through some good 8-10" of standing water and was still decent enough at pulling me up over some decent sized rock inclines with wet and muddy tires (semi-slick) tires.

The stock seat was good for me until about 20 miles round trips and then I swapped out for something a bit more comfortable.

As my legs feel stronger and my distances increase I am wondering if I could also use a road bike but I wouldn't get rid of this one either way."

How big of an effect does wheel diameter have on bicycle performance?

John P

Answer
Surprisingly not as much as a lot of people would have you believe. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

The big advantages are; A smaller wheel can be made much lighter and therefore will accelerate quicker. A smaller wheel will be much more resilient to sideways forces.

The disadvantages are that they need to be geared much higher and spin faster (higher frictional losses) for any given speed.

There are few really low rolling resistance tyres available for small wheels. The best that I 'm aware of is Greenspeed's Scorcher here is a review
http://www.bentrideronline.com/reviews/scorchers/scorchers.htm

My conclusion is that on a shorter or winding courses the smaller wheels will be much better. As the riding surface becomes rougher, or softer the advantage shifts towards larger wheels. For sustained higher speeds (ie road cycling) the larger wheels win, but not by a huge margin.

Here is an article that covers the subject well. (and a reliable institution.)
http://hea-www.harvard.edu/~fine/opinions/wheelsize.html

I'll throw in this review of a small wheeled road bike for good measure

Whats a Good Type of Bicycle for my girlfriend and I?

best budget spinning bike on Lifeline Spin Doctor workstand review
best budget spinning bike image

Steve S

We live in the city (Ann Arbor Michigan) and will be using the bikes for short bike rides in the city but primarily for short rides in parks and trails around the outskirts of Ann Arbor.

Whats a good inexpensive brand of bicycle for us?

Answer
Sounds like a call for the comfort-series-mountain bike.
Diamondback Wildwood, Giant Sedona, or Trek Navigator are my suggestions for budget comfort bikes.

Wal-Mart style bikes certainly have their place in this world. They're easily affordable and they do what you expect for them to do: move forward when you pedal, and stop when you brake... for a while.

But, because they are cheap, they're built of cheap stuff by people working for cheap money. Therefore, they're often assembled poorly, the wheels tend to go out of true (wobble left and right when you spin the wheel) more easily, the gears go out of adjustment sooner, and the (hand) brakes are squishier.

If you're good with your hands, you could buy the cheap bikes along with a bicycle repair manual and be happy with your purchase for years to come.

Otherwise, you'll be bringing your bikes to a local bike shop (LBS) for repairs. So, imagine this: you pay $150 for your new bikes at Wal-Mart/K-Mart/ Target. You ride them for about a month when you notice the gears aren't shifting right and the brake levers now reach the handlebars when you squeeze them; only slowing you down instead of stopping (this is called cable stretch. it happens with ALL new bikes). Not to mention that pothole/curb you hit last time out, so your wheel is out of true. You bring it to the local bike shop and are told you need a tune up which costs $50 (first one's free if you buy from LBS). Now your bike cost is $200 and you still have cheap bikes.

So, do yourself a favor and pay upfront and get the good bike your looking for rather than the junk your wallet wants. :)

What are some bikes that are like weight and under 200$?

In that video, even know it is obviously not just the bike, but he can spin the bike undersneath his feet so I know its much liter than my Mongoose Hoop D. Do any of you know a bike that I can buy thats really light weight?

Answer
Unfortunately, no. Even for small BMX bikes, materials cost money. You just can't build a frame out of lighter weight materials for that much. There is a famous saying in the bike industry: Light, Cheap, Strong. Pick Two. If you have a very limited budget, its usually best to look for a good deal on Craigslist. You can get a bike for under $200 from someplace like K-Mart or Target, but its going to be heavy as a brick and probably won't last very long. I work for an independent bike shop, and the lowest price mountain bike we have is $350, the lowest priced BMX is $300, and the lowest road bike is $850.

How to make a friction generator to power your bike light?

Johnson

What materials do i need to build it at home (homemade)?
Thank you a lit 'MarkG' :D
If there are no better answers, then you got the full points
Thank you a lot*

Answer
A permanent magnet hobby motor from Radio Shack, some rubber tubing and hose clamps.

The motor will generate a voltage when its shaft is spun. You need to attach a small diameter pulley or wheel to the shaft of the motor. You may also try slipping a piece of small diameter rubber tubing over the motor shaft. Either way the bike wheel will rub against the pulley or tubing covered shaft to cause the motor shaft to rotate. You can attach the motor to a frame or bracket using hose clamps and wire ties..

You may find it easier to wind a coil of magnet wire and mount that coil to the bike frame near the rim. Then crazy glue pairs of magnets to the rim (alternating the pole orientation).

THis will generate AC power as the magnets travel past the coil. Use a pair of white LED's connected in parallel but in opposite polarities to the coil. Each LED will light on part of the AC volatge.

Yes, I too was and am secretly a couch tater. I get up with a good DVD workout, keep a diary of my good and bad habits- for accountablity, and have a secret body fantasy in mind while I workout.
If you dream it, you can acheive it- corny... hell yes, but it works. Get a picture of someone whose body you admire, and look at it everyday to keep sight of your goals. You can be just as hot with time and determination. It's going to be hard, but that is okay. It really is.

wanting to bike inside and have been thinking about a indoor spin bike. My question is should i get an indoor bike or get a roller for my road bike? links would help a lot thanks

Answer
In the winter when I can't bike as much (because of the snow, sub-freezing temperatures, and short days), I do a lot of running to build bone-mass and lung capacity. I also got an inexpensive spinning bike and do 1 to 1.5 hour interval training sessions. I have found that between running and 'spinning' you can actually build on your 'mid-season' fitness level, and then in spring you can easily and quickly rebuild your endurance, but you will be fit and faster.

These two in combo is a nice break from the real bike so you don't burn out. It's a matter of personal preference of course, but some cyclists who ride the Trainers/Rollers in the off season tend to burn out late in the season. Another thing to consider is the extra wear and tear on your bike from the trainer/rollers.

A real good read about this can be found at the links below:

My dirtbike keeps slipping out of gear?

jake

It's not all of the time but sometimes when I shift my bike will not go all the way into the gear up or down it will slip back into neutral. I do not know why if anyone has any answers on why this is happening I'd greatly appreciate it if you could tell me. I think it may be the gear sprocket or the shifter it's self I'm not sure though. Just hoping its an inexpensive and easy fix.

Answer
You did not tell us what the make, model or year your bike is.

if it is the rear sprocket, when you gas it under load, the chain will shift spin/slip on the sprocket. This would mean the teeth on the rear sprocket are almost non-existent.

It is a worn shift drum, worn shift paw, worn shift plate or a bent or worn shift fork.

You won't know until you split the cases.
