What are the best shoes for spinning?

monie

I am looking for shoes for spin class does anyone know where I can get a cheap but comfortable pair?

Answer
It depends on what pedals you are using. If you have flat pedals a simple pair of cross trainers is fine. If you need clipless, try looking at Nashbar.com or performancebike.com. they are always having sales on shoes.

Remember, that the type of clips for clipless pedals vary, and some shoes can only handle one type of clip (e.g. SPD or Look). If you don't know what you need, go to your local bike shop, and they can help you.

Good luck

Looking to buy a beach cruiser, I need advice on size and brands?

originale_

I'm 5'9 inches tall (guy) and I want to know what size bike I should buy and what brands are good. I'm looking to buy it used and want to spend no more than $125 Also, is there anything else I should look for when buying my bike? Thanks.

Answer
Cruisers defy normal bike-fitting rules, so just get one that you can sit on and put your feet comfortably on the ground. Felt has some awesome cruisers, but I doubt you can find one in your price range. The Trek cruisers are pretty cool, and not much new so if you can find one used you'll be in luck. Electra has really neat ones but they're the same or higher than the Felt pricewise.

Be sure the brakes work.....if it has foot brakes those can be a pain to fix but any decent shop can do it for you. Cruiser wheels aren't always the greatest, so spin them to see if they're true and don't hop (flat spots from curbs, etc). If it has a chainguard or fenders, look at them to see if they're bent badly.

If you scout around the thrift stores, antique shops, and garage sales you might be able to find a treasure for $20-$50. We do a weekly starbucks cruiser ride with 14-30 people every week....lots of them scored big with really sweet old bikes that way. The nice thing about modern cruisers is that they'll have aluminum wheels and decent brakes....the old bikes with steel wheels and flexy brakes are a nightmare when it's wet.

I just purchased a New in home Spin bike and I dont want it to become a new piece of furniture....I want to use it and continue to use it, but I am a serious couch potatoe...DVD's and the remote is what I'm used to....How can I get up?
Is it possible to gain new habits...purposly?

Answer
Yes, I too was and am secretly a couch tater. I get up with a good DVD workout, keep a diary of my good and bad habits- for accountablity, and have a secret body fantasy in mind while I workout.
If you dream it, you can acheive it- corny... hell yes, but it works. Get a picture of someone whose body you admire, and look at it everyday to keep sight of your goals. You can be just as hot with time and determination. It's going to be hard, but that is okay. It really is.

What should I get/ do to become a mountain bike racer?

pokerspade

I am an average novice bike rider. I want to know what I need to do to start training and eventually compete in mountain bike races. What kind of training and diet regiment should I follow? What kind of bike and helmet should I get? How do I even get into a race? I am looking for anyone who has experience in the sport who might be able to help an upstart wannabe racer make his dreams come true.

Answer
First off, I am sure you have a bike. But I am sure it's not 1. Fitted to you 2. Tuned 3. Has proper Components. If you want to race this summer the good news is you don't even need a bike right now. You need to be in the Gym 3-4 days a week taking Spinning classes, weight lifting on both legs and upper body and following a nutrition plan to skinny you up (yes Skinny riders are normally the fastest).

Bike, Ok so your now on your way to getting fit. That's good. But to race you need the right bike. Go to your best Local bike shop (check MTBR.com for review). And tell them your story, they will either outfit you with a better set up or take what you have and get it ready for racing..

Riding: MTB is not just about fitness or gear. But a lot about heart and finesse. I would find out from the shop were the last year races were, maybe there was a series that toured around your state. Then as soon as the weather is nice get out there and ride as much as you can, forget the Gym and just ride. It's a lot different then being on a stationary bike.

Once your comfy on the bike and all the trails (this is not as easy as you think). Make some friends that ride, again your shop is a good resource. and look into a good beginner race. This will get your feet wet with how it's done.

After you have raced a little the rest falls into place.. Good luck.

What happens to tire slime after its expiration date?

Colin

Hi,

Some while ago I bought some slime/tire sealant for my mountain bike. The tube it came in says it lasts from two to six months.

I was wondering: could I put some new slime into an inner tube with expired slime? What happens to the slime when it expires? Does it become like a paste or evaporate?

Thanks.

Answer
I have had Slime tubes in my MTB for over 2 years. Same tube, same slime. Every week or so they lose around 10 psi if left unchecked (maybe it's time for some new slime tubes) , but this is no problem if you regularly check and change your tyre pressure for riding different conditions/surfaces. Around 2 or 3 times in this time I have got a flat tyre. All I did was spin the wheel to re distribute the slime and then pump up it back up and it is fine.

Sure it was a bit messy when it was time to get a new rear tyre (it gets slimy between the tyre and tube!) but it was clear that after inspecting the tube, it had in fact sealed quite a few small punctures (got bored and gave up counting after around 10). Once in the new tyre I gave it a nice spin and spread the slime out and it is fine.

So no need to fix a puncture during the whole life of an MTB tyre used all different conditions/surfaces.

All the nay sayers who say Slime does not work, you must have only had experience with cheap products and not proper Slime ( http://www.slime.com/ ) or not used them at all and just going by a few bad reviews. And yes, the valve would clog up if you let the air of of your tube tooo fast!

So yeah, to answer your question, don't worry mine are keeping my tyres full of air and stopping puncture after 2 years, maybe I will get some new tubes and slime when I wear out these tyres...

Three months ago I bought a Schwinn Spinner Pro spinning bike on Craiglist. I enjoyed it for about 2 months before it started making very loud clicking sounds when I pedal it.

Does anyone know what the problem could be -- and how I can fix it?

If not, who would be able to fix it? Since I bought it used, I don't have any repair or service information. (I live in the Chicago area now.)

Answer
Any bike shop should be able to fix it for you. The other guy that posted does not realize this is an exercise bike and not a normal bike so it doesn't have derailleurs . If i had to guess id say the problem is with the crank.

How can I match beats per minute of music to indoor cycyling cadence?

funinsun

(The spin bikes at my gym have cadence displays on them). If my song is 120 bpm should my cadence also be 120?

Also, how do I determine my running cadence? Do I count strides in a minute?

Answer
Use a watch with a second hand you want to count your knee coming up 12-15 times in ten seconds. Match your running to your fitness level cadence is not important in running. Run hard enough that you do not get out of breath. The cadence in cycling is so you don't pedal to hard and it's more efficient.

How is a regular exercise bike different than a spinning bike?

best quality spinning bike on Spin Bike 680 by Progression Fitness | Flaman Fitness
best quality spinning bike image

Kimmy

The buzz lately is that you can burn about 500 calories, tone up and lose weight quickly by exercising for only 30 minutes on a spinning bike.

I have a regular exercise bike and cannot afford a spinning bike or classes. Would I be able to achieve the same results by exercising for 30 minutes a day on my exercise bike?

Please explain to me the difference between the two bikes and how they work differently to give different results?

Answer
The primary difference is the adjustability and the quality that goes into the drive mechanism. Spinning bikes, as the name implies, spin a weighted flywheel using the power of your legs. The tension you set, in conjunction with the weight of the flywheel, determine the resistance you feel. This provides a much more realistic effect in terms of how it uses your muscles. A old school excercise bike isnt as good at effectively targeting the muscle used and doesnt provide as much of a realistic cycling feel.

That said, if your goal is just to get a workout in you arent going to miss much. A competitive cyclist would notice the difference but a casual rider just looking to burn some calories probably will notice only the terribly uncomfortable saddle of an old excercise bike.

Think of it as the diffference between running wind sprints vs. running parachute assisted acceleration sprints.... Unless you're a pro athlete working on dropping your 40yd times, wind sprints is just fine. Similar situation here. If you're gonna be heading to the races, start spining.. If you just want a workout save the money.

PS- If you get serious about riding and you really want the best set-up, IMO its using your road bike on resistance trainer like the cycleops fluid2 or something similar. It lets you keep your cockpit setup (duh, its your bike) but gives you the indoor training option for those shoddy days when you dont want to go outside and ride.

What is the difference between a spinner bike and an exercise bike?

Teresa

I have been researching the spinner bike and it burns tons of calories. The bikes looks just like a regular exercise bike. Have anyone experience riding the spinner bike, is there a difference?

Answer
Hi Teresa! I'm familiar with spinner bikes. Normal users don't seem to care for them. The reason is motivation. A spinner bike is used best at a spinning class (say at the YMCA/YWCA where the teacher/class provide motivation) or purchased by "road warrior" cycling enthusiasts who are highly self motivated to supplement outdoor training when they can't "hit the road". In any event, without cycling or spinning training, a spinner bike should not be considered. With a spinner bike there's shifting involved and normally no programs or electronics to guide the user through a workout. In otherwords, it isn't the spinner bike that burns more calories, but the motivation to push oneself. Also, the average person can't handle the strenuous spinner bike workouts, so paying substantially more for a spinner bike, rather than a normal exercise bike (recumbent or upright) would be a waste of money. In the end, spinning without proper training could actually have a negative impact on a person's outlook, causing them to loose interest in exercising altogether...

You'll get a great cardio workout with either a recumbent or upright exercise bike. Quality exercise bikes will run $500 - $2,000 or more. Stay away from the low end bikes and look for one with a good warranty of 10 years or more. I'd suggest Endurance exercise bikes because they have Lifetime warranties. I hope that helps... Happy exercise bike hunting!

Mazda

Hey guys i am on a budget and love bmx bikes and i bought a cheap one for $125 at sportsmart in canada and i found out it doesnt have barspin? So can i get a part to make spin? Or my only choice is buy an expensive bike?

Answer
Not really, the headsets are designed differently as well as the cable stoppers. It would cost a lot to change.

Simple solution: ride with no brakes (on a $125 sportsmart bike the rear brakes are most likely very bad anyway, right?)

I have been training on a Spin bike but now need to ride on the road a month before my Triathlon. The course is very hilly. I know how to change gears but don't know if I should be on an easy gear with more revolutions on the incline or at a harder gear and be at more of a "mountain bike push" while going up the hill?

Answer
Use whatever gear is needed to maintain at least 90 rpm. There is NO right or wrong gear. You should also be able to accelerate in whatever gear you're in. Got a cycling computer with cadence counter? If not - get one. http://www.cateye.com/en/products/detail/CC-RD200/ That one or any other good brand.

Can anyone give me knowledge on spinning stationary bikes? particularly in the area of shopping for one?

Answer
Get an entry level road bike and install it on an indoors trainer. That will allow you to take it out when the weather is nice.

The stationary bikes are heavy and much more expensive than a decent road bike.

Answer
Well, I left Kentucky back in '49
An' went to Detroit workin' on a 'sembly line
The first year they had me puttin' wheels on cadillacs

Every day I'd watch them beauties roll by
And sometimes I'd hang my head and cry
'Cause I always wanted me one that was long and black.

One day I devised myself a plan
That should be the envy of most any man
I'd sneak it out of there in a lunchbox in my hand
Now gettin' caught meant gettin' fired
But I figured I'd have it all by the time I retired
I'd have me a car worth at least a hundred grand.

CHORUS
I'd get it one piece at a time
And it wouldn't cost me a dime
You'll know it's me when I come through your town
I'm gonna ride around in style
I'm gonna drive everybody wild
'Cause I'll have the only one there is a round.

So the very next day when I punched in
With my big lunchbox and with help from my friends
I left that day with a lunch box full of gears
Now, I never considered myself a thief
GM wouldn't miss just one little piece
Especially if I strung it out over several years.

The first day I got me a fuel pump
And the next day I got me an engine and a trunk
Then I got me a transmission and all of the chrome
The little things I could get in my big lunchbox
Like nuts, an' bolts, and all four shocks
But the big stuff we snuck out in my buddy's mobile home.

Now, up to now my plan went all right
'Til we tried to put it all together one night
And that's when we noticed that something was definitely wrong.

The transmission was a '53
And the motor turned out to be a '73
And when we tried to put in the bolts all the holes were gone.

So we drilled it out so that it would fit
And with a little bit of help with an A-daptor kit
We had that engine runnin' just like a song
Now the headlight' was another sight
We had two on the left and one on the right
But when we pulled out the switch all three of 'em come on.

The back end looked kinda funny too
But we put it together and when we got thru
Well, that's when we noticed that we only had one tail-fin
About that time my wife walked out
And I could see in her eyes that she had her doubts
But she opened the door and said "Honey, take me for a spin."

So we drove up town just to get the tags
And I headed her right on down main drag
I could hear everybody laughin' for blocks around
But up there at the court house they didn't laugh
'Cause to type it up it took the whole staff
And when they got through the title weighed sixty pounds.

CHORUS
I got it one piece at a time
And it didn't cost me a dime
You'll know it's me when I come through your town
I'm gonna ride around in style
I'm gonna drive everybody wild
'Cause I'll have the only one there is around.

Answer
WOW.I had a Honda 350 (CL) about 20 years ago and I just got back into it. I got another red Honda, a CBR 600 F3.I found a super clean 1998 for $3500 and it is awesome. It is tame as a kitten under 4000 rpm, but goes like a lion after that. What excitement!!! On the freeway, I can get it over 90 in a hurry, or just cruise along at 65. On the highway, cruising at 40 to 50 is very sweet and in 6th gear, it is purring. It is also an "eye catcher" and makes me feel 20 years younger. It is a 4 cylinder, water cooled and sounds like a sports car. Its quiet, very nice to ride and when you want some good "cheap thrills," just roll the throttle andlet the fun begin.
Any clean 600 cc sports bike will give you what you need.I get about 40 mpg, cheap maintenance and a lot of fun.
Look at whats out there in your area and take one for a spin.

Happy motoring.

Question on Setting Race Sag?

andy

i want to set my race sag ony my crf 450r. but i am wondering if i change it, my forks wouuld feel like they arent right. if i loosen my sag, will i need to change anything with my forks to make it even?

Answer
There are a couple different sag settings that are often taken into consideration when setting up a bike, and the two of most importance are commonly known as ârider sag and âfree sag. Rider sag is the distance that the rear end of the bike settles when on the ground and under the load of the riderâs weight. Free sag is the distance that the rear end of the bike settles when on the ground, but only under the load of its own weight (no rider).

THE IMPROPER SAG EFFECT

TOO MUCH: Having too much sag (the bike sits high in the front and squats in the rear) can reduce the front endâs ability to absorb bumps. Light and less compliant, the front end will simply ricochet around and deflect off of obstacles, and can actually make the rear end feel harsher, as it will be settling deeper into the travel. In addition, too much sag will adversely affect the steering of your bike. With the rear end riding too low, the front end will ride high, thus not settling into corners and ruts like itâs capable of.

TOO LITTLE: Not enough sag (the bike sits too high in the rear) will greatly affect its high-speed stability. With too much preload (tension) on the spring, the rear end will not settle and will kick its way through braking bumps and off of jump faces. Overall traction may also be sacrificed.

STEP 1:

Start with your bike on a stand, ensuring that the rear wheel is off the ground and that no part of the linkage is touching the stand. Next, locate the points youâll be measuring between. On our team bikes, we run a longer bolt through the rear fender and subframe to use as a stable marker, and measure down to the corner of the swingarm. You may also choose a measuring point on the rear fender, which gives you the advantage of locating a spot that will give you a nice round number for easier math. With your initial measurement recorded (photo A), take the bike off the stand and roll it onto level ground. Next, have the rider sit on the bike so that he or she is positioned on the cradle of the seat with their legs dangling even with or in front of the foot pegs. Make sure that the rear shock settles properly by pushing down on the rear of the seat to allow it to settle back up into position. Also, be sure that the rider is not applying the front brake, as this will place an unwanted load on the suspension. Measure again between your two reference points, and subtract the difference to obtain your rider sag (ex. 600 mm. extended â 500 mm. under load = 100 mm. sag).

Note: Thereâs not really a maagic number for sag, but a target range between 100-105mms is pretty close for most of todayâs bikes.

STEP 2:

To increase or decrease the amount of rider sag, first put the bike back onto the stand. From the right-hand side of the bike, using a hammer and punch, tap the top locking collar on the front side of the shock to break it loose (photo B). If you need to put more sag into your shock, youâll have to loosen your spring. Using your hand, spin the spring counterclockwise so that its collar moves up the shock shaftâreducing tension (photo C). If you have too much sag, youâll need to tighten the spring with your hand by spinning it clockwise so that its collar moves down the shock shaftâcompressing the spring and increasing tension. Now, follow the same procedures for measuring the extended measurement (on the stand) and the loaded measurement (on level ground with riderâs weight), and recalculate your sag. Continue this procedure until the desired sag is met. Using your hammer and punch, tap the top locking collar from the backside of the shock to tighten it.

FREE SAGâARE YOU ON THE RIGHT SPRINGS?

Now that youâve obtained your rider sag, itâs time to measure your free sag to determine if the springs on your bike are right for you. Place the bike in the same level spot on the ground and measure between your two reference points without the rider on the bike. The difference between your extended measurement (on the stand) and this new one will represent your free sag.

TOO SOFT: If your free sag measurement is 20mm or less, I recommend going to a stiffer spring rate. A spring thatâs too soft forces you to add excess preload to get the desired rider sag, and as a result the rear end is raised, which can cause it to unload too much in the air and top out as the travel rebounds, resulting in a harsh feel.

TOO STIFF: If your free sag measurement is 35mm or more, I recommend dropping to a softer spring rate. A spring that is too stiff will not allow for maximum traction under acceleration, and thus youâll feel every bump on the track.

Note: If you determine that a stiffer spring is required on the rear end of your bike, then more than likely youâll also require a stiffer set of springs in your forks, as well.

Answer
I looked a long time ago and never found anything. I just recorded one of my favorite programs on TV and played it back when I exercised. Start out with a very easy 10 min warm up and the increase your pedaling speed to 70-90 rpm's with just enough resistance to get you heart rate to 70-80% of max. A heart rate monitor is a great help during any exercise. Stationary bikes are very boring and people tend to try to rush though the exercise just to get it done and end up quiting after 15-20 min. You want to ride for 45-60 min or longer.

I bought this one and it comes with a mount so you can put it on your handlebars. It makes riding on a stationary bike more rewarding when you know how well your are doing.

What is the best way to burn fat?

Jamie

I'm 19, 5'4'' and 110 pounds. Clinically I'm considered underweight, but I do have problem areas. I would like to burn fat from my butt and stomach, I'm just not sure how. I stretch, do yoga and walk occasionally, but these don't seem to work. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Answer
Moderate intensity cardio.
And if you want to increase the results, include intervals (aka wind sprints).
And obviously, adopting a diet that avoids eating fat as much as you can will minimize sabotaging your exercise efforts.

If you're not walking at intensity that makes you breathe open mouth, it's likely just not intense enough (but still, it is better to be doing that, than nothing at all).

Cardio could be jogging, biking/spinning, elliptical machine, rowing, Zumba, etc.

Also, although it's a popular belief that advertisers still use to sell exercise equipment, you CANNOT control where your body consumes stored fat.

In general, the body consumes fat in reverse order that it stored it.
Thus, the first place one gets fat, will likely be the last place to get lean/toned.
Fat loss is systemic, meaning thoroughout the body.

Research has shown that men tend to get fat in the belly first, whereas women first tend to deposit weight in thighs and glutes (butt).

You CAN target building muscle, however.
So, if you used to have fat, saggy triceps (back of upper arm), with exercise alone you could build the tricep muscle, making it firmer, but you will still have a layer of fat over the muscle.

If you want to learn more about above info, read Covert Bailey's "The Ultimate Fit or Fat."
http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Fit-Fat-Covert-Bailey/dp/0618002049/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_1/181-6546497-7248637

But I warn you, his position is that there is simply no shortcut to combined good excerise and diet.
That's why it's important to find some kind of cardio activity you enjoy so that its easier to stick with it.

Namaste',

edit: Just saw this article about the big benefits of variety in workout activity.
(i.e. don't do the same thing every day of every week, because the body is just too darn good at adapting to the same old routine).

What are an good pair of shoes for spin class?

best spin bike money image

Rachel

I have been taking a spin class regularly for about 2 months now, and am interested in investing in some spin shoes. What are a good brand of spin shoes? I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on them, but I do want something that is going to be worth it. Do the shoes make a serious difference? As of now I am using a normal pair of sneakers.

Answer
You can get a pair of Shimano MT-31 or MT-21 shoes for around $40.
You can find other brands on sale for around that price. You probably want SPD shoes and clips. Check with you instructor.

Nashbar and Performance usually have good deals.

http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/SubCategory_10053_10052_200383_-1_200275_200297

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/sub_cat.cfm?subcategory_id=2120

If you have a bike get a set of SPT pedals for it and they include the cleats. Other wise you need to buy the separate cleats.

Clippless shoes will allow you to use more muscles in you legs and will tone them more then just wearing sneakers. You will also burn more calories for that same reason.

What Modifications Could Be Done To A Road Bike To Make It Faster?

Galleon

I rode on a Exitway Ergo Team, which is Classified as a Road Bike.I am just a little curious n' stuff, what modifications could I do to my Bike to make it faster?I mean,of course I know that its all about the Leg Power, but i'm still pretty sure there are Mods out there for Speed.

Answer
You can achieve a lot just by setting the cycle up correctly for you, and making sure it's running smoothly.

You can check the following:-
Saddle and handlebars are set correctly for you.
The chain, sprockets and gears are clean, well adjusted and lubricated.
The brakes are adjusted correctly, and not dragging.
The wheels spin smoothly.
You have road tyres inflated close to their maximum pressure.

Anything else is going to cost money, and will have less of an impact on your speed than improving your own leg power.
If you have slick tyres they are faster than tyres with aggressive tread.
The wheels will make a difference, but how much you will need to spend to gain a noticeable improvement will depend on what you already have.
Replacing components with lighter ones will have a negligible impact on the cycle's performance, but if you do need to replace anything, then buying something better will help slightly.

At the end of the day it's really down to the rider. Someone from the TDF will still be faster on a cheap cycle than an average rider on a top line cycle.

How many calories do you burn on a bicycle ride?

best spinning bike with power meter on Power meter
best spinning bike with power meter image

The Oracle

I am amazed at the controversy over this, wondering what others think. Crank power output meters only measure power at the crank, and do not consider a persons metabolic calorie burn (calories burnt running the body). I have a Forrunner 305 and have run it side by side with a crank power meter, and low and behold, when you add in the metabolic rate - they almost match.

Heart rate is affected by many things, but most importantly - hydration. You could get a faulty reading (high) from being under hydrated - Rule of thumb - one pinch of unrefined sea salt for every 16oz of clear water you drink (You'd be surprised how this will lower you blood pressure and heart rate - that's right - lower). You should drink in oz's 1/2 of your body weight a day (180lb person = 90oz of clear water a day - don't forget the sea salt as water by itself is a diuretic).

Any thoughts?

Sources - Years of spinning, biking and a book titled "Your Body's Many Cries For Water."

Answer
As a rule your body is only 25% effective in power output most of the calories you burn are in the form of heat, so what ever the power meter reports is not the total calories burnt, a conversion to K-Joules is a better measure of the calories used.(1 cal. = 4kj)
This site is fairly accurate, with in reason.

Fzr 600 voltage problem or something?

Charlie Ha

My 1992 fzr 600 has trouble with the battery or something. The battery is brand new and it dosent seem like I'm getting enough cranking power, what happens is in the morning or after the bike sits about 8 hours or so after running, it will turn over slower than it should and it dosent seem like its getting enough juice. So if I hook it to a charger it spins it over quick and dosent take but one or two rotations to fire right up. After you go to town or run the bike for 5 mins it spins the motor over fast and fires right up. I'm positive my problem lies there now and not in the valves or carbs. I went through the valves and found one tight one and I fixed that. And it helped it some but not all the way so any advice helps thanks.

Answer
Something is either draining your battery , like a direct short or faulty switch.
or
something is not charging your battery like a failed VR or stator
You can test with a cheap multi meter and google, its fun and easy

Any recommendations on a clipless pedal system for a road bike?

spin bike shoes reviews on Womens Spinning Shoes - BEST SHOES
spin bike shoes reviews image

John C

Seems there hasn't been any discussion on this in at least a year...wondering about the latest and greatest.

I currently use SPD's, and these days I'm not riding as much as I used to. Only 100 or so miles a week. I guess you might say I'm trying to get back in to riding shape.

Anyways, I'm starting to get a little right knee pain when I'm forced to really crank, like in a climb. I'm also aware that SPD's don't get much float, and I'm wondering if that may be part of the problem.

So, thinking of options. One possibility that seems to get decent reviews are the Speedplay Zeros.

Thoughts? Comments?

Answer
The best way to avoid knee pain is to do an easy 10 min warm up and spin at 70-90 rpms in a gear that is easy. Saddle height and placement is also critical. I would also check the placement of the cleats on your shoes.

swimsuit season!!!?

Q. ok, if i jump rope for 5 minutes a day, each healthy ----- no junk food. and have gym class every other day, FOR 5 MONTHS, will i be ready for swimsuit season....i have a belly (NOT HUGE) but annoying that i need to get rid of, and my thighs need toning......do you think i'll be ready if i do this?
jump roping also works out your whole body too.....my gym class is 90 minutes.

Answer
I agree with the poster who said "Crunches don't get rid of belly fat, they get stronger abs. You will need to do cardio if you want to lose weight."

First you don't need to lose weight to slim down. What you want to do is reshape your body so that you have more muscles and less belly fat. It's is not a question of losing weight but replacing the fat on your middle with muscles else where on your body.

You can't choose where fat will be reduced. You can't target fat. You can choose which muscles to build. Targeting which muscles you build is very easy, you just use them !!

To lose weight you need to build up your bodies need to burn energy every day. You need to increase your metabolic rate.

The best way to do that is to build your muscles and the most important muscles are your lungs and your heart muscle.
This is why people talk about doing cardio workouts. Workouts that exercise the heart and lungs for a period of time. That means running, spinning, biking etc.

You should start doing cardio it in short blocks of 5 minutes with a couple of minutes to recover and then another 5, recover, another 5 and so on.

Try to build up to the point where you are doing 45 to an hour. Then as you get fitter and recover faster, cut back on the recovery breaks.

5 minutes of high intensity jump rope is the wrong start. You can still do it, but you need to work on lower intensity and longer duration: Endurance.

To help you get the intensity and duration better balanced you may want to invest in a heart rate monitor, (and good running shoes). Get one with programmable zones and upper and lower alarms.

In the first few months rate your progress by your increased endurance.

Seek the advice and help of a school coach or personal trainer from a gym. Get them to help build you a personal exercise plan, and then review and expand it every month based on your progress.

Try finding the various running clubs in your town. Most offer free advice and free or very low cost training.

You already know what to do with food. Eat regularly at least three times a day. Eat lots of green and leafy stuff, (not lettuce) and lots of other veg and fruits.

Cut back on all junk food, fried food. No sodas or so called energy drinks like red bull. You can use a little gator-aid for workouts that last more than 40 minutes. (Both during and after.)

Try to eat some protein after long hard workouts, preferably within 30 minutes.

Add pliaties to help strengthen your core.

Keep a log of your workouts and your progress.

How do I prepare to audition for the colorguard team and what should I be expected to do?

best spin bike routine image

ABC2

I have no experience pretty much but the guard director says most do not. I want to practice spinning and such too so if you know some good places on the web to find out please leave links =)! By the way when i say color guard i mean dancing with flags, sabers and rifles (not like folding a flag)

Answer
Most Guard instructors will teach a short routine to audition with, as well as basic terms and techniques. Often they have you audition with a group of others. You may be called in several times so don't stress if you made one mistake.

some tips

-try to practice in front of a mirror or a sliding glass door so that you can see your angles and adjust when needed
-remember to count in your head during the audition. Many times people don't realize that they are moving their mouth as well
-Keep your head up, don't look at the floor unless that is part of the routine
-If you make a mistake just jump back in. Laughing it off or beating yourself up about it isn't going to do you any good. Just jump back in.
-Look confident, even if you don't feel confident in what you are doing
-spins will come natural after a bit, tosses take a bit longer. Don't be afraid of getting wacked by the flag. It will happen, just like falling off a bike when you are first learning how to ride.
-dance experience and a good memory will help

hope that this helps

How to exercise for a perkier and toned butt?

Ale

Hi so this time last year I was very into working out to tone up but now I've gotten really lazy and that's taken a toll on my once perky booty haha can someone give me a good and effective work out routine or exercises I could do to get my butt more toned and a tad bigger? Any tips are greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

Answer
The right cardio exercise and weight training activities (like squats
and deadlifts) can make a difference in your backside and help you get
those buns of steel. Find out the best cardio and strength training
exercises for strengthening and firming up your rear.
1. Squats.
Squats are one of the best exercises you can do for your hips, butt
and thighs. Stand with feet hip-width apart and squat, keeping back
straight, abs in and knees behind your toes. Let your butt lightly
touch chair and squeeze butt to stand up. Repeat for 2-3 sets of 8-12
reps and add weights for more intensity.
2. Lunges. Stand in a split
stance, with feet about 3 feet apart. You want both knees to be at
about 90-degree angles at the bottom of the movement, so adjust
accordingly. Hold weights in each hand (or place a barbell behind the
neck) for added intensity. Bend the knees and lower the back knee
toward the floor, keeping the front heel down and the knee directly
over the centre of the foot. Keep the torso straight and abs in as you
push through the front heel and back to starting position. Don't lock
the knees at the top of the movement. Perform 1 to 3 sets of 10 to 16
reps according to your fitness level and goals.
3. Step Ups. For step
ups, you simply place one foot on a step or platform and push through
the heel onto the step. This is an excellent exercise for the glutes.
4. Hip Extensions. Lie on the floor with feet propped on the ball,
legs straight. Keeping abs tight, slowly lift your hips off the floor
(squeezing the buttocks) until body is in a straight line. Hold for a
few seconds and lower, repeating 10 to 15 times.
5. One-Legged Deadlifts. You should skip this exercise if you
have any back problems. To do this move, take the left leg back just a bit, lightly
resting on the toe. With the weights in front of the thighs, tip from
the hips and lower the weights as low as your flexibility allows. Keep
your back flat or with a natural arch and make sure you keep the abs
contracted to protect the back. Squeeze the glutes of the working leg
to raise back up. Do 2-3 sets of 8-12 reps.
6. Hiking. Now the
exercises listed above aren't the only strength moves for the glutes,
but we often forget that there are cardio activities that will also
engage the backside. Hiking is one of those activities and it also
burns tons of calories. Also, walking up an incline automatically gets
your glutes more involved and, if you're wearing a backpack, you're
really getting a workout. A 140-lb person burns about 390 calories in
about an hour!
7. Biking. Riding a bike is great for your heart and it
also targets almost every muscle in your hips, thighs and butt. On a
stationary bike, alternate 3 minutes at 70-80 RPM with 2 minutes at
100-110 RPM for a calorie-blasting 30 minute workout. You can also try
Spinning at the gym or riding outside. Gear up to really work your
glutes! A 140-lb person burns 335 calories in 45 minutes.
8. Running. Running, like walking, is accessible, easy to learn, reduces stress,
helps in weight loss, and it makes you feel good. Plus, it really
works your butt, especially when you add a few hills to your regular
running route. A 140-lb person burns 475 calories during a 45 minute
jog.
9. Kickboxing. Kickboxing was a hot item back in the day, but it's
still a great workout. Controlled kicks work your hips, thighs and
butt while complex combinations that include punches will target your
abs to make them stronger. A 140-lb woman will burn up to 500 calories
with 45 minutes of kickboxing.
10. Walking. Walking is easy: you can do
it anywhere, anytime with no special equipment. There's no learning
curve and it's something you can incorporate all day long. If you walk
up hills, you can really target your glutes and, if you pick up the
intensity, you'll burn some of that extra flab off your buns! A 140-lb
person burns about 300 calories an hour during a brisk walk.

What do you think about the LeMond RevMaster Spin bike? How do you think it compares to the other spin bikes?

I may be changing gyms. The one catch is that the new gym has LeMond RevMaster spin bikes. They are a bit older but in decent shape. Spinning classes are a priority for me. I tried a class with the LeMond and it was just so different than the other bikes that I'm used to, like the Star Trac and Johnny G's, etc. I just don't know if I can adjust and most importantly keep the mental motivation up to reach my goals. What are your thoughts? Thanks for any and all help that you can give me.

Answer
I won't ride on anything that has "LeMond" on it.

Tight Hamstrings- Is my saddle too high?

atomicdoug

I've been racing bikes on and off since the early 90s. Lately I notice during extended pacline riding that my hamstrings get tight, to the point where its uncomfortable. Is there a way I can adjust my saddle position to put more load on my quads and less on the hamstrings? I am pushing down too much on the pedals vs spinning? I set my saddle height using Lemond's formula.

Answer
I'll bet your problem has more to do with overdevelopment of your quads, possibly in combination with a lack of stretching to help keep your hams loose. This is really common in cyclists. A stretching program is the best thing you can do...either some basic exercises or yoga classes.

Cycling positions just naturally produce an imbalance in your leg muscles. Strong quads and tight hams are the norm for frequent riders. If it gets pronounced enough, it can create knee stability problems and even backaches.

If your saddle height is correct according to Greg's .883 formula, then you should be ok. Lowering your saddle will only make the problem worse, and raising it may have no effect or it could start to cause you knee or achilles problems if it's too high. I'd start with gentle but frequent stretching and maybe consider talking to an experienced sports trainer or rehab specialist if you're really having troubles.

Hope this helps some...

Why do I always have a camel toe?

best spinning bike 2013 image

I always get a camel toe with anything I wear (leggings, jeggings, pants, shorts, yoga pants, underwear, bathing suit) I've tried panty liners, putting a tissue in between my underwear and pants and wearing a bigger size bc I thought they were probably too small for me. But I'm not even fat I'm actually really skinny size 00 I also don't like wearing long tops/shirts bc they make me look funny! Someone help please!

Answer
Sounds like you're wearing ultra-high-waisted jeans/ leggings/ jeggings/ tights/ tube trousers that are too tight in the crotch. ..and/ or you are wearing underwear that isn't very supportive. ... and/ or you are wearing flimsy and/ or poorly manufactured garments that are constructed of extremely thin material.

Search for compression-style leggings. They are made of a thicker, denser fabric that contains a high Lycra-Spandex %, and serves to smooth the bulges, shape the bum, flatten the abdomen, and support the thighs/ keep everything contained and ward-off jiggling..

You may be slim but garments like that really have to be better quality and thicker/ denser (whether one is ultra-slim, or "fluffy", curvy.. or anything in-between). It isn't just about a larger size. Supportive bikini or boy-short underwear, made of high-quality cotton (preferably with Lycra-Spandex for stretch and to smooth) is necessary under body-con garments. The body-con garments should fit properly and support the body/ smooth curves.

As far as "..looking funny".. when you wear a tunic-length top, extra-long tanks, longer over-sized bf shirts, etc. (that cover the bum sufficiently). It can't possibly look as funny as revealing too much of your body. Only underdeveloped children should be wearing leggings, jeggings or tights as pants. Leggings aren't pants.
http://storminakcup.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/american-apparel-warning-these-tights-are-not-pants-300x216.jpg?w=470

Working-out at the gym, cycling, training for a 10k, lounging around the house, taking a yoga, spinning or Pilates class.. those are all fine. But wearing form-fitting garments with no long top, or even an extra-long tank, to cover the bum and upper thighs
=
too revealing for being out in public.

What would you think if you saw a guy walking around like this all of the time..?
http://i00.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/1128422524_1/Compression-Under-font-b-Pant-b-font-Shirt-font-b-Tights-b-font-Base-Layers-Rash.jpg

It's inappropriate. Men and women, teen/ tween boys, as well as girls, should abide by the unofficial (but still widely recognised) "no crotch rule" re: wearing athletic wear, cycling-bike shorts, running pants, tube trousers, leggings, jeggings, and tights. Long tops are necessary when/ if one opts to be in public wearing body-con bottoms.

Is my hybrid bike climbing hills properly?

Q. I recently purchased a hybrid bicycle. A 2013 GIANT Cypress DX.
http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/cypress.dx/9019/48868/

I took it out and realized that I seem to go a bit slower than most cyclists I come across that aren't on road bikes. This could just be due to my lack of skill or something.

But when I try to go up hill I notice that it is incredibly difficult, and I think I'm using gears properly, but it's just so painfully slow. I don't know how normal it is or at what speed I should expect to be able to climb hills - I'm sure it depends on how steep the hill in question is -- but is there any way to know how fast I should be going up certain kinds of hills?

Are there certain problems with the bike that could account for this?

Answer
Hiram

You have just begun your cycling journey. Consider that you do not really know how to ride yet. You are not in cycling shape. It can't ate you a long time to understand just how to ride. Months to get into shape, and years to understand how to handle your bike.

Start by reading up on "spinning". You can ask here too. Spinning allows the modern cyclist to ride both distance with speed, and have little fatigue. That will help you understand why you are slow on the road, and even slower on the climb. There are many people ho never learn.

Enjoy the knowledge. It will get you to where you wan to go. The other part is training!
