best spin cycle to buy image

Brian x
My washer is a little over 5 years old none of the spin cycles works anymore no matter what the setting I put it on /perm press/delicate/ect.. The agitator works fine . Im not sure if I should have this repaired or just buy a new I would prefer to have it repaired if it wont be too expensive...
Answer
There are a few possible reasons this would occur:
- the lid switch is not working properly
- a faulty solenoid relay is not shifting the transmission into the spin cycle
- the timer which controls the solenoid relay is faulty
- the transmission itself is faulty.
In rare instances with belt-driven machines, a loose/worn belt will work in the agitation (wash) cycle but be too weak to spin the tub in the spin cycle. A burning rubber smell in your washroom would be a sign that the belt is slipping and needs to be replaced

My "vintage" whirlpool washer makes a terrible screeching/banging noise during spin cycle?

I have a top loader, belt driven 30+ yr old washer that works very well but recently, during spin cycle only, it makes a terrible screeching noise and almost sounds as if the tub is banging against something (not sure about that part - could just be the terrible screeching noise that makes me think that, not sure). My question is could this be a matter of replacing the belt or could it be something more serious. I hate to get rid of it if it is something minor as other than this, it works very very well. Thanks for any info.
P.S. We have checked the level and it seems to be fine in that respect. My husband did adjust the belt to make it a little more taut but I have not tried it out yet since that was done. Original belt. There are approximate 3-4 pulleys underneath the washing machine that the belt goes on.
We took off the back and listened to the washer during the spin cycle. It seems as though the noise really escalates when water comes into the tub during the spinning/rinse cycles. When the washer is almost done and there is little water coming into the tub and is almost drained, the noise lessens. Does that mean anything. Also, we sprayed some lubricant into the mechanism while it was spinning and after that the noise seemed to lessen some. Hope this helps.

Bearings with out a doubt, and whether 'whirlpool/Philips' still have parts available you will only find out by speaking to them.
You could of course ask one of your local white goods service companies if this is some thing they can do/ get parts etc., rather than you having to buy new.
Hope this helps.
