Cyclist do you believe Spinning can imitate a true ride experience?

If so what are the key things that make this idea? Music? Program? Instructor with cycling experience? Or other?

Answer
I DO believe that some types of spinning are great substitutes for actual riding. I am a triathlete and train about 5 days a weeks on the bike. On the days that i do long extended intervals(10 to 12 min) i like to do this on the trainer because i can up the drag on my trainer to make it harder on my body as well as get in an uninterrupted long interval in. I find that when i try to do intervals on the road something is always going wrong. Flats, having to stop for traffic(which ruins that part of the workout entirely), not having enough daylight....... whatever the situation i can always complete my interval rides on my trainer uninterrupted.

Now for long rides..... You need to do those on the open road to get used to dealing with the weather conditions like wind, and turning, or riding with a group, and holding a steady pace while staying in a straight line.

In the winter time all i do i run on the raods and spin on my trainer. And in early spring when i am trying to get ready for those early road races and individual time trial events, I am on my trainer quite a bit. I love the trainer for high intenity workouts. like intervals or power sprints or even just putting that baby on a high friction level and just grinding for and hour or so.

But when it comes to developing road racing skills like pack riding and the brains to race with higher level cyclists...... the trainer is no comparison for the open road.

Use you trainer for what it is .... A trainer...... not for the entire sport of cycling. Intervals, or your off day slow easy rides are what i find the trainer best suited for.

Good luck and have fun. But remember to get outside some and learn how to develop cycling abilities the trainer cannot develop for you.
