How can most cyclists make themselves look pedalling slow yet fast?

Its been a long time since I rode my bike again. Today, I was mad at myself because that an old lady riding her bike passed me without an effort. She just rang her tiny bell at me with a smile and made it look easy because she does not catch her breath despite her speed and sunny weather. While I was opposite.

How can this be, is it only practice or there is a way to get faster by adjusting my gears?

Answer
You need to ride more to get stronger. You want to learn to pedal at a high cadence 70-90 rpm's with a lite touch on the pedals. That will use your slow twitch muscles that burn fat as a fuel and your legs wont get tired.

Select a gear that will get your breathing to the point where you can still talk but not sing. If you need to catch your breath or your legs start to hurt drop down a gear or two and keep going.

You can switch it up and pedal slower in a higher gear for a while but it will kill your legs quickly. Switch back to a higher cadence with a gear that is easy to spin to recover. Climbing hills will help also.

High cadence with a lite pedal you can go for a very long time.

Low cadence and mashing will use up you legs quickly and will use your hamstring and gluts more. Good for sprinting to the finish line and climbing hills.

How do you call a bike gear that is heavy and light?

I feel like i have this kinda mixed up because . I am a cyclist and i train with my dad daily . I hear him give me advice to move my gears high when we go hills , for us High gears means : light and LOW gears mean : heavy . I feel like i got these mixed up because iv been seeing videos of other cyclist giving advice on hill climbing . and they say to have your gears low .witch makes me think, wait why make it heavier ? I guess im gust mixed up on how to say it but what is the proper way to say it ?

Answer
Lower (easier) gears to climb hills. Higher gears as pedaling becomes easier. "Spinning" and "cadence" are the two key words. Have your saddle at the right height for optimal leg extension & power. "Spin" at a rate or "cadence" between at least 70-90 rpm in gears easy to use with moderate pedal pressure.
