How to get used to cycling shoes?

Just bought some shoes (finally starting to get used to clipping them on). Went on a 55 mile ride (as usually) and noticed a significant decrease in my endurance. The cycling shoes feel much less *actually* "connected" to the pedals than wearing running shoes (which have flexible soles on them, and can "sense" the pressure being put on the pedals easier).

Obviously there isn't really a solution to this.. (have to wait it out I guess..) but was wondering to hear about your first experience with clip-on shoes. How did the changes feel like? How did you get accustomed to them?

I also got a bike fit while I was at it.. they put the seat significantly lower than usual.. feels even stranger without the feeling of being "on top" of the bike.

It is not the shoes. Check your cycle fit. Your saddle should be high enough that while, seated, your legs are almost completely straight when the pedals are in the six o'clock position. That being the case you might find yourself spinning at a much higher rate.... In a much different gear. If there was to be a saddle adjustment it is usually higher, not lower.

What you should be noticing is that you are far more efficient and pedaling at a higher cadence AND able to comfortably pedal in a faster (harder) gear.

I distinctly remember the feeling of speed when I made the switch. It was like I have a good wind to my back.

Go to the local bike shop and try on a few pairs. You can find some good deals online at Nashbar or Performance Bike. Trying shoes on is the only way to find out what size you need. You want to get SPD mountain bike shoes and you will need a pair of cleats to go along with them. If you have a bike get a set of pedals, they come with cleats.
