My spinning bike makes a loud clicking sound when I pedal it. How do I fix this -- or who can I get to fix it?

Three months ago I bought a Schwinn Spinner Pro spinning bike on Craiglist. I enjoyed it for about 2 months before it started making very loud clicking sounds when I pedal it.

Does anyone know what the problem could be -- and how I can fix it?

If not, who would be able to fix it? Since I bought it used, I don't have any repair or service information. (I live in the Chicago area now.)

Answer
Any bike shop should be able to fix it for you. The other guy that posted does not realize this is an exercise bike and not a normal bike so it doesn't have derailleurs . If i had to guess id say the problem is with the crank.

What are the pros and cons for each?

I just got a spinning bike and i have decided to lose weight again. I rode today and I rode for 45 minutes with no problem. (How many times a week and how long each time should I cycle to lose weight?) I need to lose around 100 pounds. I will be eating healthy and drinking water too.

Im about to buy a used nirve beach cruiser, what do you think of the brand? are their any questions you think i should ask the seller before i buy?

Answer
Nirve makes good bikes. Visit their web site to check out the model. make sure the frame is the correct size for you. Usually people that spent that much on a bike take care of them. There is not to much that can go wrong with a cruiser. Look for rust or other signs of neglect and take a test ride. Pick the bike up and spin the wheels, they should spin freely and run straight. If the bike looks clean and is the right price it's up to you, it should last a long time if taken care of.

Before i buy Mario Kart wii. How is it, who are the characters please review it for me thanks?

Answer
One may wonder why Nintendo would add motorcycles and dirt bikes to the game series that popularized, if not invented, the genre of weapons-based go-kart racing. If you're one of the fans who balked at the inclusion of two-wheeled vehicles, a midair stunt system, and motion controls, rest assured that despite these changes, Mario Kart Wii is still very much the game that you have come to love over the years. But even if you haven't been on the receiving end of a blue shell before, the extensive multiplayer options, deeply integrated online functionality, multitude of controller schemes available, and simple gameplay make this latest Mario Kart great fun and quite possibly the most accessible one ever.

The main event of Mario Kart is the Grand Prix mode, which in this version pits you against 11 other computer-controlled competitors in a race to the finish on a four-course cup event. Grand Prix lets you select from three different engine sizes/difficulty settings, and there are initially four cups available, with four more that are unlockable by conquering their predecessors. This makes for a total of 32 different courses, of which half are brand-new for the Wii and the rest remastered versions of classic stages from previous games. This combination of both new and old provides a solid mix of novelty and nostalgia, but overall, the stylistic differences highlight two of the game's greatest flaws.

One of the major new features is the midair stunt system, which is activated by flicking the Wii Remote at the very moment you leave the ground from a ramp-assisted jump, making your racer perform an extreme-sports-style trick, such as a 360-degree spin, which upon landing rewards you with a considerable speed boost. To facilitate this new mechanic, most new tracks include huge half-pipes, rampant ramps, a multitude of moguls, and a plethora of pits, all of which are deliberately placed to encourage extensive stunt work. While this new system itself isn't flawed and in fact injects a great deal of fun and new strategy into the gameplay, its influence on course design has made certain items even deadlier, as you're that much more likely to be blasted uncontrollably into lava or other hazards due to how much time you spend in the air.

The second major track-related issue is that the classic courses, while they've never looked better, are much less engaging than their counterparts. While the newer tracks are wild, crazy, and may even change dynamically as Grumble Volcano or Dry Dry Ruins do, the older courses are their polar opposite and are with few exceptions flat, empty, wide-open, and pit-free. Though you may find the occasional ramp or half-pipe haphazardly bolted on to make it play a teeny bit better with the stunt system, it generally seems like Nintendo deliberately decided to make you choose which was more important: stunts or a slightly better item balance. This dichotomy of level design creates a tenuous balance of play styles and is inelegant at best.

Mario Kart Wii includes the standard batch of items that players have come to expect, including mushrooms, starmen, fake item boxes, shells, and more. New items include the thunder cloud, which will automatically shrink you after several seconds unless you ram someone to pass it off onto them; the POW block, which temporarily stuns everyone ahead of you and makes them drop their items; and the mega mushroom, which makes you grow super large for a time to flatten other racers beneath your tires. While it's pretty much a guarantee of the Mario Kart experience that no one can stay in first forever, some of the more powerful items such as the blue shell, lightning bolt, and POW block appear absurdly often. It's not uncommon to be hit by several of them in a row or even simultaneously if you're in first place.

Much like Super Smash Bros. Brawl before it, Mario Kart Wii includes support for every possible controller configuration under the sun. The game comes packaged with a steering wheel controller shell that allows you to take full advantage of the Wii's motion-sensing abilities for what is perhaps the best purely tilt-driven control scheme available on the market. Though it does take quite a bit of time to get used to, the steering wheel feels quite natural and is very responsive. However, if you're not exactly up to the task or prefer the touch of an analog stick, the Wii Remote with Nunchuk, Classic Controller, or GameCube Controller schemes work just as well, with the directional pads on the more traditional controllers nicely substituting for remote-waggling.

Besides Grand Prix, Mario Kart Wii also includes Balloon Battle and Coin Runners battle modes, which take place on 10 separate arenalike tracks, five of which are new and the rest brought out of retirement. Both of these modes have been changed to two team-only events, which is a disappointment to say the least, but they are still fun and entertaining alternatives to standard racing. Split-screen multiplayer allows up to three friends to join you in Grand Prix or battle. Using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connect, you can play online matches with up to 12 total players with a maximum of two per system.

Online integration is deeper than most other games on the Wii, and you can join matches of any game type with friends as well as strangers from your local region or across the world. You have a persistent score, which is either increased or decreased by your performances, and when seeking out matches you're automatically place with like-skilled opponents revealed on a representation of Earth that uses Miis to show the approximate locations of the competition. In the event that you join a game already in progress, you will automatically be placed in a spectator mode until the round finishes and it's go time. Communication between players online is still virtually nonexistent, but while the ability to smack talk is a vital element of local multiplayer, it's not necessary for facilitating matches.

The most interesting online feature of Mario Kart Wii is the Mario Kart Channel, which can either be launched from within the game or saved directly into your Wii d

What model of motorcycle should I buy?

Don Corleo

I'm a new driver seriously considering buying a motorcycle. What model of motorcycle would you recommend? Would I also have to buy a car for when it rains and the winter season?

Answer
Since you're a new driver with little or no experience riding a motorcycle, the first thing you need to do is to take a Basic Rider Safety Course. These are offered in one form or another in all 50 states. They vary in cost, but you usually receive your motorcycle license when you pass the course. The safety skills you'll learn will be well worth the cost.

When considering what type of motorcycle to purchase, you need to think more about what you want from riding and less about what manufacturer's you're interested in. First, ask yourself a few basic questions about what you want from riding. What kind of riding do you want to do and what capabilities do you want your bike to have? Are you attracted to the idea of riding the winding, twisty roads? If your answer is yes to this question, you should look for something in a sport, standard or even a sport touring bike (more on this later).

Or, do you think you just want to cruise along at a modest pace so you can soak in the experience of having the wind in your face? If this is what you like, a cruiser or larger sport touring bike might be more to your liking. If you like all things chrome and you think a bike should be thunderously loud, then a cruiser is most definitely your thing (again, more on this later).

If you chose a sport bike, standard or sport touring bike, then you should consider machines in the 600cc-800cc range, and NO larger. As a novice, you simply do not have the skills and experience to ride anything above that class. Personally, I'd suggest you stay in the 600cc class if a true sport bike is what you choose to purchase. Something like the Honda CBR F4i (which you'll have to buy used since they are out of production) or the Honda CBR600RR are good machines, as are the Yamaha R6 and Suzuki GSX-R 600. All are very capable machines, with plenty of power for a novice to enjoy. Power delivery to the rear wheel is fairly smooth so with a reasonable degree of control you won't be likely to spin the rear wheel (though it is possible).

If you choose to go with a cruiser, go with something in the 650cc-750cc range. Again, Honda, Yamaha (Star motorcycles) and Suzuki all make decent models in that range that would suit a novice. All would serve you well until you've outgrown them through sheer riding experience. That should take a few years unless you ride everyday, everywhere you go for the first two years. At that point you might be ready to move on to something else.

If you live anywhere where it snows, a rust bucket car would be enough to get you through the winter until riding season starts again. Buy yourself some reasonably priced protective gear (Cortech makes some great stuff at affordable prices and it's pretty good in the rain, too), a full-face helmet, leather gloves and above ankle boots. Full protective gear will give you the best chance to survive a mistake (a crash of your own doing) or an accident cause by some @ss in a car or truck. Don't let anyone tell you you don't need that stuff. It saved my life and it saved the life of a professional instructor I know. Both of us survived head-on collisions with cars because we had full protective gear on.

And last, but most importantly ... never, EVER, ride over your head!!!

Never, EVER, let your friends goad you into riding at speeds you know you can't handle. That's a sure fire recipe for a funeral. Yours, and probably some innocent bystander's as well. Do yourself and everyone else a huge favor and just don't go there. And, always view your riding with a critical eye. That way you can review your riding with the intention of improving your skills. Do that and with any luck you'll survive 35 years on two wheels the way I have.

Good luck!

Do you recommend any good brand for scooter other than the expensive Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki?

asmrani

I found a lot of cheap chinese mopeds but who wants to buy them anyway. I'm looking for good quality150cc moped for $2000 max.
Thanks in advance

Answer
The only reasonably well built and affordable bikes, other than the Japanese and European scooters, would be from KYMco and SYM. I have heard some very good things about these companies. Both are companies that have spun off from Honda and are based in Taiwan.

However, while a parts supply chain is in place, somewhat, there is a limited number of service centers for these brands at this time. As sales increase, KYMco and SYM will address these problems, but for the foreseeable future, the Japanese manufacturers have a lock on this market.

The other option is to go with the European scooters, which are in fact very well built, but have a rather high price tag on them. The parts supply chain for the European scooters is problematic at best, but workable.

If all you can afford, at this time, is a low buck Chinese scooter, than keep saving your money until you can afford a nice scooter. http://www.clevelandscooters.com/id60.html
There are some good used Japanese and European scooters out there as well. Just don't settle for something that there is no parts or service available for.

where can you buy a spin bike seat online?

I'm in Australia.
A little while ago i bought a (stationary) spin bike and the seat on it has given me a fair bit of pain/numbness downstairs, even after adjusting. After checking i found that the seat the bike came with appears to be a men's seat and i would need a women's seat. i checked the site where i bought the bike from and it doesn't sell seats. i've been looking but i can't find anywhere that sells spin bike seats.
would i be wrong in assuming that if i bought a bike saddle like this one http://www.cellbikes.com.au/Planet-Bike-Saddle-Standard-Silver-Women_181 that i would be able to fit it to the stand where the seat attaches or would it work differently for a regular bike and a spin bike?
any help would be much appreciated :)

Answer
It would help if you told us the model of the bike you have since different seat attachments are used.

That said, it is almost certain you can use/adapt a regular bike seat to fit.

There are two common ways to attach a seat. The first is via the rails on the bottom of the seat, and if your bike has a standard stem arrangement this is simple. See the first link for a picture.

The second is via a clamp that tightens around a seat post. The latter is more common on many consumer spin bikes. If you have this type of bike you will need a clamp that fits whatever seat post you have on the bike AND has an upper clamp to fit the rails on a regular seat (See picture at 2nd link). You may have this already. The way to tell is to see if the seat on the bike has rails under the seat surface.

If in doubt, take the seat and post from your bike to a local bike shop and ask them to help.

I suggest a woman's Terry Liberator seat (See 3rd link)... my wife loves them.

where can i buy a fixie bike? (australia)?

rodenburge

preferably in the Perth area, if you don't know any places where i can get one, could you please give me some names of some brands of fixie bikes so i can ask a shop to order one in? :D
thanks, any help would be great (:

Answer
Unless you're planning to track race, don't buy a complete bike, as a fixie. The cool thing to do is to find a old road bike at a garage sale, (must have horezontle dropouts) and refit to be fixed. That's how you get a classy fixie. You don't even need to buy new wheels. You can ditch the freewheel and screw on a track cog and then use an adjustable BB lock ring as the cog lock ring. This setup is called a "suicide hub" because of the slim chance of it spinning off when backpedaling and should be used with a front brake installed. However, lots of people use this setup and I've yet to hear of it failing.

Do different health clubs target different target markets? If they do, how?

Answer
Yes, absolutely. A Gold's Gym for example caters to the body-building crowd. They have lots of weights, free weights and do not have aerobics classes. Now a Baly (Which uses high pressure sales techniques.) wants to be a one-size fits all club. They have a pool, they have machine weights, they have a run/walk track, they have eliptical machines, treadmills, stationary bikes, spinning classes, aerobics classes, they have a juice bar, they have babysitters on site, etc, etc, etc. Baly also advertises on television HEAVILY.

One local club in my area (Cardinal Fitness) is not strictly a body-building crowd place, nor is it a Mega-Gym like Baly's. Cardinal Fitness is a basic fitness facility that mates a low price with good, basic facilities. Cardinal Fitness has about 50/50 mix of weights and aerobic equipment (treadmills, elipticals, stairclimbers, bikes). Most of the weights are machines, but they have a fair amount of free weights (though not as much as a body building gym).

So here you have three types of gyms: one caters to a very specialized crowd, one is high priced do everything (badly imo) and the third one gives people the basics.

How do i tighten my chain?

Eric V

I have a little yamaha PW 80 and the chain keeps falling off and i need to tighten it but i dont know how, anyone know how to do that?

Answer
You did not say what year you have, but adjusting the chain is fairly easy. There are two basic types of chain tensioners on the market. Snail and pull back. Your Yamaha PW80 should have pull back.

1. Get the rear wheel off the ground. You can do this with a shop stool or some milk crates.
2. Loosen the rear axle. Do not take the axle all the way off, just loosen it so you can turn it freely.
3. Both ends of the axle are connected to the swing arm. The swing arm is the rear part of the motorcycle that holds the rear wheel. At the swing arm ends, connected to the axles you should see a part that looks like an "I" bolt (this is your chain adjuster) connected to the axle with a nut on the end that is at the very back of the swing arm.
4. On the round part of the "I" bolt should have notches on it. There will also be notches on your swing arm.
5. Tighten the chain adjuster on the chain side first. You want about 2" to 3" (2 to 3 inches) of total movement (up & down) out of the chain when you are done (depending on your owners manual or rear suspension set up). To check the chain movement by grabbing the chain with your fingers below the swing arm and about in the middle of the swing arm. Move the chain up and down to see how much movement you have. Make a note of where the notch on the chain adjuster is to the notches on the swing arm.
6. Go to the opposite side of the bike and tighter/loosen that chain adjuster to the same position on the swing arm as the chain side.
7. Go back to the chain side and check the slack in the chain. You want about 2" to 3" of total movement out of the chain. Keep adjusting both sides until you get about 2" to 3" of slack and both chain adjusters are at the same marks on both sides of the swing arm.
8. Tighten up the axle (you should use a torque wrench and torque the axle nut to spec's). Spin the wheel and visually check the alignment of the rear sprocket to the counter-shaft sprocket. The chain should be in a straight line as you are looking at the sprockets from back to front.

That's it. I would put some chain lube on the chain, check for any worn or broken teeth on the sprockets, check your spokes, inspect your tires, check tire pressure, check the linkage to the rear shock, inspect the shock and check your rear brake settings since you moved the rear wheel.

It's good to hear that someone wants to work on their own bike, most people just put gas in them and ride them. Being able to work on your own bike gives you mechanical skills, knowledge, how things operate and save you a ton of cash in the long run.

i am getting a dog and wanted to know which is better in your opinions. what do i want in a dog? by want i mean need lol. i want an active dog (as i am VERY active myself), i want a smart dog (i need challenges too! ;D ), i want a dog that loves to go on walks and runs (i do cross country at school in september then it stops, so i need to stay in shape all year around ;P ), i want to be able to walk without a leash (allie and misa do so it's not hard to teach for me), want a dog that loves swimming (we have a big pool, but if the chlorine does anything - by the way it wouldn't even be until june in the summer then i'll get it it's own pool). i will do everything an active dog needs as that is everything i need too. i picked these breeds because i find they have everything alike with what i like! i love to run, i love to swim, i love to play, i love to learn, i love new things, i love challenges, i love dogs, and i love my parents. :) <3
i don't want the dog as a guard dog, but if needed it would be inside and not fully, not even half. allie (14 pound schnoodle that turns 2 feb 22nd 2012) acts like a guard dog, but she's pretty small. misa (a fully grown - now - 6 pound pomeranian chihuahua that turned 5 months on dec 6th 2011) is very small. they are the family dogs, and my parents (stepmom and dad because my mom and stepdad can't have pets - my mom doesn't like cleaning after them and my stepdad is allergic to all animals - but it would be at my dad and stepmoms since we are there more) said i can get my own pet if i earn it, if i pay some money (i can earn it from shovelling snow, doing chores, anything that needs to be done)
and if i clean after it, bathe it when needed, take it on long walks and runs at the dog park and school (school is about 1km perim. and path in front is about the same length), feed it, give it water, train it (basics and extras - like allie can walk without leash same with misa, allie knows car, van, truck -we have a truck for my dad, a car for my stepmom, and a van for my dad when he goes to work so his truck doesn't get messy or dirty- she knows upstairs, downstairs, get down, go lie down, come (without command, only when we snap our fingers), faster, heel, wait (i tought her faster heel and wait, and some others, but i tought her those ones myself and i'm the only one that commands her those since no one else knows but me :D ), food (when we call her for food), pool (she swims sometimes in the summer maybe once a week), oopy, al, (her nicknames from me, i call her allie oup -like how people say ALLIEOUP! when they jump in a pool? lol. anyways:...). she doesn't really know shake a paw or hi 5 nothing like that because we never thought about her knowing that. but the aussie or border would (whichever i get) know all of the above, basics, and probably agility things with body -ie. weave (weaves through legs), frog (when you stick out your tounge and your dog mocks you lol i find that one cute), bang! (plays dead when you put your finger shaped like a gun and say bang then they fall down playing dead lol adorable), roll over (hand signal and command), get your tail (when you pretend to throw a frizbee and the dog pretends the tail is the frizbee), come here (finger movement when you pull your finger back like saying come here but with your finger?), kiss (when you put your mouth up to the dog, say kiss and the dog licks you), stand (stands on hind legs), high 5 (high five), standing high five (stands on hind legs while hi fiving), speak (say speak and the dog barks), count (lifts paw once when you say one, lifts it twice when you say two, etc), up (to jump into your arms on cue when you lift your arm up and say up), dance (i tought misa dance - it's when you put your finger up say dance when you have a treat in your hand make sure the dog can see it, and then the dog stands on its hind legs and walks backwards to dance then spins), sad (when you frown and say sad the dog puts their head heavily on the bed, your lap, your hand, or the couch near you if you're sitting on either, or whereever you are sitting, like a therapy dog does sustained chin), give me a beat (i wanted to create this one, it's when you say "give me a beat" and the dog drums on the ground dum dum dum dum in a rythym, then when you say "cut!" they stop), and fetch (everyone knows fetch is just throwing a ball or frizbee and the dog chases after it grabbing it lol).
SORRY FOR HOW LONG THIS IS!!!! :/ (not yelling, just so people can see)
so guys, please put your opinions, feel free to list your favourite dogs, your favourite tricks, maybe some tricks i didn't list that you think are cool, if you think i'd be a good owner to one of these dogs, and which one i should get. btw i'm 13 so i still go to school for 6 hours a day then i'm home the rest but if i go out the dogs would come. and no i won't neglect allie and

A Border Collie is more apt to be focused on a ball, and not on you - Aussies want to be in you, not just with you - they become a part of your mind. Once you have an Aussies, it will change your outlook on all other dogs. Sounds arrogant, but it's true. It's usually a profound experience.

Aussies were bred to be a replacement for a farmhand - so they are a bonded working partner. BC's are focused on long distance work, not the master, and while they listen for commands, they do not ahve eye contact with anything but a tennis ball or sheep (or cars or bikes or cats...).

Aussies are more often than not brilliant and love to learn tricks and tasks - so you will go far with one. Consider doing something like freestyle, which will keep you both more than busy.

My washer on the spin cycle moves around I need help?

best spin cycle to buy image

missy1

Just bought front laoding washer and dryer. The dryer works great. But everytime the washer goes on the spin cycles it pivets around my laundry room. And thats on low spin cycle. No matter how much or how little clothes I put in it the washer still goes crazy on the spin cycle. can someone please help me. I literally have to hold the washer in place.

Answer
It sounds off balanced. However, considering it's new I would call customer service. I'm assuming you've already tried shifting the wash-load around inside the machine, adjusting the "feet" on the underside of the machine, and know the floor is level. If all those things are fine, there may be something wrong with the machine itself.

My washing machine will not start on the wash cycle?

april12773

My washing machine's wash cycle will not turn on, but the rinse and spin cycle work, does anyone know what it could be? The brand is Roper by Whirlpool, it is about 3 years old! My husband wants to go and buy a new one, but I think it can be fixed.
Thank you everyone, it was the timer switch, the repair guy just left, with $150!

Answer
The problem is the timer switch. These can be purchased for your model for about $75.00 Just search online for washer parts.

I am interested in losing a little weight and toning up a bit, but I don't want a short term thing. I was ready to buy a recumbent bike to work out indoors because it is getting cooler and i won't have an excuse not to use it. Although I saw on biggest loser the trainer said to get a spin bike. I am not sure what that is but he said that it is the best workout u can get? Any suggestions for me? I am strictly asking about the bikes. I already know about diet.

Answer
The one you continue to use is the best one. Real cyclists all use a regular outdoor bike on a trainer (see links below). The least expensive trainers, like I use, are less than $100 (minus bike). The benefit is that once you take the bike off, they take up hardly any space, and when you're riding, it feels the same as your regular bike, because it IS your regular bike.

If money is no object, Computrainer is the gold standard. It interfaces with your computer, (and HRM or Powertap if you have them), allowing you to ride various virtual courses, or even race friends on the internet.

Spin bikes are a specialized contraption used in spin classes. Spin classes can be a fun diversion, but I wouldn't bother with one of those for home use.

How to go fast on a road bike?

DaDude

I just purchased my first road bike. Nothing special, a GT Series 4. I was just wondering what tactics are used to get up to a high speed and stay at a high speed. People say get in a high gear, but does that mean more resistance or less resistance? What gears should I use, the big one or the little one?

Answer
Real simple... Always pedal in a gear that's easy to "spin" using moderate pedal pressure at the most. When it becomes too easy - up-shift. When it starts to become difficult - downshift.

Speed will come with practice. What good is high gear if you're straining or mashing on the pedals so hard, your guts & leg muscles are busting?

Get a cycle computer if needed that tells "cadence". Keep between 70 - 90 rpm. You'll soon find your own optimal cadence. Pros cycle at a higher cadence than that even.

i was thinking about taking a water pump and trying to light an LED using a small stepper motor or something. what is the smallest application of this. today i bought a small dc motor and got it to light an LED by putting the spindle to a spinning wheel (bike tire) but there is no way i could get enough power from a water pump to turn that little motor fast enouph to light an led. so maybe i need a bigger dc motor and turbine? anyway...basically what is the smallest application possible to light the smallest energy using light. thank you!

Answer
Pico hydro power. It is a term used for hydroelectric power generation of under 5 kW. It is useful in small, remote communities that require only a small amount of electricity - for example, to power one or two fluorescent light bulbs and a TV or radio in 50 or so homes. Even smaller turbines of 200-300W may power a single home in a developing country with a drop of only 1 meter. Pico-hydro setups typically are run-of-stream, meaning that dams are not used, but rather pipes divert some of the flow, drop this down a gradient, and through the turbine before being exhausted back to the stream.

Answer
I'm a customer not an instructor, but I've been to a lot of clubs and rode a lot of spin bikes. The best one I've been on was a Lemond Revmaster. There have been other good ones, but the little design details of the Lemond made it really good for a hard-core roadie like me.

If money were no object, I'd get the CycleOps - link below

Can I use my road bike shoes without cleats on a spin bike and just use the straps?

MissLady

My cleats do not go with the pedals for the spin bike but can I still use my shoes and use the straps? They won't get ruined will they if I do not use the cleats?

Answer
There are several variables to consider. I recommend trying it and see how it works for you. If the shoes work, then check what sort of wear you see on the sole. If it's minor your good to go. I question what you will do when using your bike. installing cleats is not a 1 minute job.

Answer
Depending on your budget, you can go to a bike shop and get measured for a proper frame, or you could simply buy a used bike on craigslist and wing it.

Either way, know what riding style (forward/straight up/reclined) you'd enjoy most. Take things for spin from shops - they'll let you if you tell them you're in the market.

We have several bikes at home here, and I like to ride way forward (head almost above the handlebars) while some friends like a little more upright riding.

Is Winsor Pilates really effective? Especially if you're quite overweight?

Kelli

I'm sitting at home sick w/ a cold watching a Winsor Pilates infommercial. I keep seeing them referencing women going from size 12 down to small sizes. Do you think a curvier woman could really get in shape with this? I'd consider it if I knew it would really be effective.

Thanks!!

Answer
Make sure you read the fine print on the infomercial. The women who dropped down multiple sizes watched what they ate and added cardio activity. I've talked to a few people who were part of groups for infomercials, and it's quite common for them to be on regimented diets and to supplement the exercise video or equipment sold with additional exercise. That said, someone who is diligent about nutrition, cardio, and the exercise in question could have similar results, but remember that consistency is key.

Winsor Pilates is not significantly different from the other Pilates programs out there. All derive from the exercise system devised by Joseph Pilates. The benefits of Winsor Pilates are its availability and accessibility. Mari Winsor has her own sequence of exercises, tweaks the form, and uses a different form of breathing in comparison to more traditional Pilates, but that's not that big of a deal for most people. I've read about a few people who do find her manner of presenting the exercises helpful to them. (Personally I prefer other instructors and find that I tighten up during the handful of Winsor workouts I have, since I don't think she includes enough of the more flexibility-oriented exercises, but I've tried a ton of Pilates videos.)

Pilates is a great system of exercises that can work for any body type or size. (Good instructors will provide modifications for people with limits in flexibility, range of motion, or strength, by the way, so don't feel intimidated or discouraged.) Most people find that they don't get "bulk" while doing these strength- and flexibility-oriented exercises, but you can't completely change the body type that has been genetically pre-determined for you. Since Pilates focuses primarily on strength / toning and flexibility, you will need to supplement with cardiovascular activity (walking, running, aerobics, bike rides or spinning, kickboxing, etc.) in order to get into shape. Pilates primarily works your core, or abs and back, so make sure you get enough work in for your upper and lower body. There are Pilates videos out there, including a couple good ones offered by Winsor, that will help you there. Or you can supplement Pilates with other exercises. (I use traditional weights, too, in addition to Pilates, but that's my choice.)

I see no reason not to give Winsor Pilates a try. It may work for you. If it doesn't, know that there are so many other varieties of Pilates out there. I personally like to use a mix of Classical Pilates, Stott Pilates, other personal takes on Pilates, and even some fusion workouts.

If you're looking for more information on Winsor Pilates and other Pilates workouts, I highly recommend CollageVideo.com, where you can see previews of the videos they have in stock and read customer reviews; VideoFitness.com, where you can read consumer reviews of a ton of videos and ask questions on their forum; and YourExerciseDVDs.com, where you can read professional reviews of a number of videos.

P.S. Hope you feel better soon!

I just purchased a New in home Spin bike and I dont want it to become a new piece of furniture....I want to use it and continue to use it, but I am a serious couch potatoe...DVD's and the remote is what I'm used to....How can I get up?
Is it possible to gain new habits...purposly?

Answer
Yes, I too was and am secretly a couch tater. I get up with a good DVD workout, keep a diary of my good and bad habits- for accountablity, and have a secret body fantasy in mind while I workout.
If you dream it, you can acheive it- corny... hell yes, but it works. Get a picture of someone whose body you admire, and look at it everyday to keep sight of your goals. You can be just as hot with time and determination. It's going to be hard, but that is okay. It really is.

I need good fitting good quality shoes and I'd prefer them not be super expensive but a good fit is the most important. What's you favorite spin shoe brand?? Know where I can get any coupons for them?

Answer
If you have a long narrow foot, shop Pearl Izumi. If you have feet wide at the "last" (wide at the ball of your foot) like I do, Shimano shoes seem the most comfortable. If you are somewhere in between, take a look at the rest.

IDK about coupons, but Performance Bike is having their Winter Clearance Sale and shoes are included. Look at mountain shoes, they are easiest to walk in.

How can I make my Marin Fairfax 2007 bike better for long distance?

c_smith85

I recently purchased a Marin Fairfax 2007 hybrid bike for commuting around London, and I have so far been very impressed with it for commuting. Although I took into the country and found it to be exteremely slow for long distances. The sales man said this is due to the small wheels designed for acceleration. Is it possible to change the wheels to make it quicker on long distances? Are there any other words of advice to speed the bike up?
Sorry - the bike I have is an Marin Novato 2007 model with the following wheel specs:
Rear Hub: Shimano, 32 Hole Disc
Front Hub: Shimano, 32 Hole Disc
Spokes: DT 14 Gauge Black Stainless
Rims: WTB SX24, Double Wall, 32 Hole Disc
Tyres: Continental Sport Contact 26â x 1.6â with Safety System

Answer
There are 3 approaches to having a faster bike:
1. Shave bike weight by using components of more lightweight materials like titanium or carbon fiber. This is an expensive alternative.
You can also lighten your wheels by using road tires. These are lighter. Matching the tires to your rims may need professional (local bike shop) intervention. A road tire that does not match its rim can slip off.
2. Alter the sizes of your chainrings and cogset. You can use a road bike's crankset. These are larger and thus will transmit faster linear speed, but will require more pedalling effort to accelerate. Also, these usually come with only 2 chainrings. You'd have to adjust your front derailleur accordingly. The shifter will then have one dead speed. Or you can replace your front derailleur and shifter set with an appropriate road version instead.
You can change your cogset to one with the smallest cog having 11 teeth. This will also make your rear wheel spin faster.
3. Become a stronger rider. Lose weight; strengthen your lower body.

Definitely you can't change the size of your wheel to a larger one without changing your frame and fork and chain and cables and...

The next larger wheel size is 29", the same size as that of a road bike. Maybe you need a road bike instead. But if you prefer the more upright riding position and the better standover clearance of a MTB (or an ATB as what it's usually called in your country), then it may make sense to purchase a complete 29-er rig.

I looked up your bike. The componentry is already very good if you only use it for commuting. If you are in a situation that limits you to owning only your current Marin, changing to skinny road tires is the best alternative. Or you can look at it this way: not going so fast on a country road affords you more opportunity to take in the sights.

Ride safely. (",)

What is a good starter road bike for a first triatholon?

best spinning bike shoes on indoor biking and spinning differ in that spinning uses a fly wheel ...
best spinning bike shoes image
Q. Im training for my first triatholon and am looking for a good road bike for the riding portion. I have been training on a stationary bike at the gym and am needing to get some miles done on a road bike. Ive looked at some local, Houston Tx, bike shops and the prices are well over what I want to spend on a bike. Any suggestions on brands and dealers would be great.

Answer
Ebay! Start with bikes 4 years and older, aluminum, at least 10 speeds. Riding in a Tri is a lot like riding a century. Bike fit and comfort are more important than saving weight. If your position and pedal stroke are comfortable to you, chances are they're more efficient as well.

Then, invest in a set of Tri Aero Bars.. around 60 bucks, and practice with them. More than you think you should! If you wait till the day of your triathlon, you'll dump, wipe, face plant, or hurt someone else the first time you get the wobbles. Make sure you're riding intervals and sprints, not just long distance, low effort spins on an exercise bike.

Anything by one of the larger cycle manufacturers will suit you fine as long as you're comfortable with the bike, it has a big gear you can spin for an hour at high speed, and you rack up the seat time in prep for race day. Good Luck!

And to the Chris S below me.. I agree seem like they are a purely optional expediture, but I have found that they come in very handy when resting your arms and shoulders before or after a long swim. My Veloton group actually restricts their use in TT due to 2 or 3 guys riding aero bars in a paceline last year. A direct result of poor planning on the part of the organizers, but needless to say, that particular group ended up with a broken clavicle, a broken collarbone, three green-stick arm fractures, and yards of road rash!

Also, Have to ditto the shoes and pedals. Most of all though, be comfortable. Dont buy new gear the day before your Tri. If you havent trained in or on it, chances are it will just hurt you.

Any tips on how to ride a bike properly?

Giselle

I know how to ride a bike [obviously]. But are there any ways to ride it well? Like should I pull in my abs or tighten my leg muscles? Anything like that?

Answer
When riding you should have your weight on the saddle. Use arms for balance (and on hills to brace), but basically you should be relaxed. Keep a more or less straight back. Now ... focus on "peddling in circles". This is only really possible with bike shoes / cleats or shoes and clipless peddles. The whole idea is to use all the muscles of the leg and ankle to push down, pull back, kick forward and pull up. You also want to spin at 70 - 90 rpm (lower puts strain on knees and much higher makes you breath harder than optimum.

Voila ... good riding form and fast travel.

if i ate 1600 and burnt 1000 calories would i lose weight?

best spin bike for women on Real Men Join Spin Classes - That's Fit
best spin bike for women image

mel

im a 15 year old girl, 5'1 and 57 kilos i want to lose 5 kilos
if i ate 1600 calories all of it is healthy besides i had a can of fanta
and if i exercised burning 1000 calories on the spin bike, would i lose weight?

Answer
In general, you have to consume LESS than you burn to lose weight (obviously).

However, you have to consider the calories you are burning just by breathing, walking around, digesting, etc (resting rate).

For women: (10 x w) + (6.25 x h) - (5 x a) - 161

Where:
w = weight in kg
h = height in cm
a = age

(10 x 57) + (6.25 x 155) - (5 x 15) - 161
= 570 + 969 - 75 - 161
= 1303

Therefore you are burning around 1300 calories per day just by existing.

Therefore if you are actually burning 1000 calories per day IN ADDITION to this by riding a bike, then yes, you would lose weight.

Actually, I'd say you would lose too much weight and would be in danger of starving yourself :(

As a 15 year old (still growing) girl, you should concentrate on eating healthy food (avoid sweets in general including fanta) and doing exercise. Trying an extreme diet like 1000 calories of cycling every day is NOT healthy for a growing body at your age.

Would you rather parents be blissfully ignorant or paranoid of dangers?

Victor

In the world today, information travels fast, extremely fast. We know that children are killed, kidnapped, murdered, etc from big things to small things. We know the story of a child (one child out of millions) who was kidnapped from a school. We also know of the dangers and crimes everywhere around us. We now know everything! All this knowledge should help us make better rational choices about our children, right?

Well, some parents do make rational and good decisions for their children. The rest? Mass paranoia. Because of this knowledge, a lot of parents nowadays are paranoid of everything and puts their kids in a bubble making sure their kids do nothing.

Lots of kids are loosing their childhood because because their parents just are afraid of knowing what can happen to their kids. Even letting the kids bike around the neighborhood (let a lone letting them walk a mile to school) is dangerous because some mean person will kidnap them!!

Was it better before, when we didn't know about the kidnappings five states away or is it better now that we know everything out there - every danger no matter how small or rare?

Answer
I think this whole "stranger danger" thing is blown way out of proportion. Child abductions and molestations have sunk to an all time
low and they are becoming less and less. I think its wrong that some parents mainly "paranoid" Moms teach their kids to "fear" strangers. 99.9% of strangers would never harm a child, or is even sexually attracted to it for that matter.

I was at my friends grandson's t-ball game and he is 5 turning 6 this May and these\ 2 women sitting next to me started getting into the whole stranger danger thing amongst themselves because one of the teams didn't have the boys names on the back of their jerseys and they were like "yeah that is probably so some wacko or whatever can't just go out and call a kids name or whatever" and she used the name Matthew because that was her kids name. I was thinking to myself, "oh my god get over your paranoid self." That had nothing to do with stranger danger by the way. Some of the teams (because its t-ball) just didn't have the kids names on the back of their jerseys. I told this right to these 2 dimwits. They said like 3 things that got me to turn my head and chime in because of the stupid stuff they were saying. You know the parents of the kids were at the game for crying out loud and everybody trusts one another there. You get some of these "paranoid" Moms and just women in general but mainly Moms and they go so over the top with the stranger danger thing. Its not fair to the kid that these Moms and even some Dads, but mostly Moms make them fear strangers. It just isn't right. Kids approach strangers all the time and once they talk to them and get to know them, they aren't strangers anymore are they? II ts like ok you don't want your freaking kids to get to know anybody because you are this paranoid and un-trusting? Even my friend agreed with me that these 2 ladies were "over the top." Some of these Moms who are this way need to come to grips with reality and that is that the
chances of their kids getting abducted is slim to none. The problem is, the news just over-does it. They take 1 abduction and then drag it on for months and then another one and drag it on for months, so it makes it seem like there is nothing but child abductions. Damn, there are more important things that the news channels need to be showing. Like I said, child abductions have gotten less and less and soon there won't even be any.

I would rather parents be right in middle (balance is the keyword here) and teach their kids when they are young like age 4. As soon as they can talk and they know right from wrong you just give them the whole "don't touch me in the no no spot" talk. Don't teach them to fear anything and that includes strangers. Strangers are people and don't you want your children and your kids to know people? Damn, do you want em to be sad little loners becaase you are paranoid and too over-protective? Now I just noticed you said dangers and at first I thought it said strangers. Well same topic for the most part. Yeah, I don't think parents should be blissfully ignorant nor should they be paranoid and shelter to an extreme. Kids are going to talk to strangers plain and simple and if you teach them to fear strangers, then that makes you a bad parent, or parents, but like I said, the paranoia tends to be "ALL MOM". They need to be able to experience things first-hand. That is how they learn things. Parents teach their kids everything they know, but when they aren't at home and they are out and about, they are constantly learning things that "they" didn't teach them, or maybe something that "they" did, but with a slightly different spin on it. Basically children, kids and teens have to experience things firsthand for themselves too, so they can get their own take on things. They learn things from other people other than their parents and that 9 times out of 10 is a good thing. They need to be able to survive when they get out there into the real world and when they're on their own and how is that going to happen if they are over-sheltered and over-protected? Simple, it isn't folks. Like I said, balance is key in everything you do in life and that also goes with the raising of kids.
