are 3 hold road shoes compatable with spin class pedals?

Sugie

I just ordered Shimano road bike shoes cycling SH-R085W which are SPD-SL and look cleat compatable. I was wondering if they were compatable with the pedals used in spin cycling classes?

Answer
Your shoes are 100% NOT compatible with the SPD pedals used for spin and MTB. Look cleats use a wide 3-hole pattern, while SPD-compatible shoes use a narrow 2-hole pattern.

You also might want to shy away from performance-driven road cycling shoes. They have very little traction and you can find yourself in a few very embarrassing situations walking from the spin studio to the locker room.

Shoes for spinning classes?

Fatbeard

I'm about to buy shoes from spinning.com and it says it also recommends cleats. Are these the part you need to buy separately so the shoes clip into the pedals? I would have thought the shoes would come fully equipped and ready to clip in, otherwise why would anybody buy them, that's dumb.

Answer
The clips come with the pedals so if you have a bike buy a set of pedals and you can use the shoes on both. You can go to the local bike shop or look online for a pair of SPD mountain bike shoes for a lot cheaper the shoes from spinning.com You will need SPD clips $15.

Mountain bike shoes or road shoes?

lilonstitc

I take cycling (spinning) classes, and have been for the last 3 years. I have just acquired a pair of shoes for this class (I am not sure what kind they are). They are nike womens cycling shoes. They are used. I would like to buy a new pair but should I get a road shoe or mountain bike shoe? I have this issue with my shoes now where if I am in the climb position to long the balls of my feet go numb. I am thinking maybe it is because my toes don't have enough room. But my main question is which shoe should I buy for cycling (spinning) classes. thanks!
They are spd cleats. I can get spd cleats for either kind of shoe. Just not sure which shoe is best for a spinning class.

Answer
I am an avid road cyclist, and spins in the off season or when the weather is crappy. I wear mountain bike shoes to spin in, and road shoes when I am on the bike.

If you are not a cyclist, you can get by with mountain bike shoes. However, there are spinning shoes as well. They are a lot lighter than mountain bike shoes. Either way you go, I highly recommend that you get a pair. Road are a lot lighter than mountain bike shoes, and spinning shoes are lighter than mountain bike shoes.

Shoes for indoor cycling?

Celestis

Even if I research online - seems that there are different types as far as the sole goes and the holes, some have four, others three....which one is right for indoor cycling? I've been going to spin class at my gym and lots of people there have them..

Answer
Most indoor spinning bikes have Shimano SPD style cleats. Those cleats have two bolt holes. Any road shoe that supports the two-bolt cleats will work. The three hole cleats are for the Look or Shimano SPD-SL systems. You can't use the bottom two of the three holes for the SPD cleats. The spacing is wrong. Some shoes support both systems -- they have 5 holes.

Road shoes are the best for this type of use, especially since you won't be walking on them very much.

What is the best brand/model of spinning shoes to buy?

I started spinning a few months ago and have decided I love it so much I want to get shoes.

What brand or model of spinning shoes do you recommend?

Answer
All spinning bikes use SPD pedals. I use mountain bike shoes with recessed cleats so I can walk easily when not spinning. You can order the shoes online, but I think it is a better idea to buy them at a local bike store so you can try them on. You will have to buy the shoes separately and then buy the SPD cleats. The mechanics at the bike shop should be able to install the cleats quickly if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. I use my old AXO mountain biking shoes which I love but unfortunately, that company is no longer making mountain biking shoes.

Below are some links to some nice shoes to consider:

What are the special trainers used for spin classes and where can I buy them?

Regina Pha

I go to spin classes and i know that there are special trainers that stick to the pedal, to help me go faster, but I don't know what they're called or where to buy them-can anyone help me?

Answer
You are talking about clipless pedals.

Spin bikes generally use SPD pedals and cleats for your shoes. You can buy the SPD clips at any bike shop or online. They are shaped like a little arrow and are metal. They are the mountain bike shoe cleats. They are under $20.

You will likely have to buy bike shoes too. I strongly recommend mountain bike shoes because they have tread on them whereas road bike shoes have a slick (sometimes carbon) sole. I have taken a bad slip wearing my old road shoes in spin class and then jumping off the bike and walking the tiled hall to the restroom.

check out these links
Shoes:
http://www.performancebike.com/shop/sub_cat.cfm?subcategory_id=2120

kinda pricey but will last you for years.

Cleats:
http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=1844&subcategory_ID=10047

The cleats are shown on a black shoe insert. You typically will not use that part. Once you get your gear, take it to a bike shop and have someone put on your clips for you. ( or buy it from your local bike shop)
But if you do it yourself, start with your clip placement exactly in the middle. If knee pressure or pain results, they you can play with repositioning the cleats on the bottom of your shoe.

Just verify with your spin instructor that they use SPD compatible pedals. For a time we had 2 bikes with Look system pedals and that is very different ( and highly unlikely in spin class)

The cleats on my bike shoes get loose every few uses, is it the shoes or the cleats?

I have Specialized mountain bike shoes with SPD cleats, mostly for use in spinning. Every two or three times I wear them, I notice the cleats getting lose on one of the shoes. So I have to tighten them frequently. Does this indicate that the shoe or the cleat has a problem and may need to be replaced?

Thanks.

Answer
Listen, dude, you're talking nonsense.

Can you recommend men's spin shoes for someone who spins every day?

I spin a lot and find that my Sidi road bike shoes leave my feet feeling sore. Are there any specific models of shoe that you would recommend for heavy spinning?

Answer
That Sidi shoe is NOT necessarily for spinning classes it is for serious road racing....no wonder it hurts! Probably not fit right to your foot either. Look at any of these shoes here : http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/CatalogSearchResultView?storeId=10052&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&searchType=categoryId&searchTerm=400097&cn1=f03//0%20-%20100//p//0//15||&sortBy=iphrase%20relevance//0&beginIndex=0&pageSize=16&ipState=c0%3Di%253A1%253B3%253Biphrase%2Bbundle%2Btaxonomy%2Bid%2Bfrom%2Broot%253B400097%253B%253A400097%253B1%252C1%253B0%26q%3D16%26a1%3Diphrase%2Bbundle%2Btaxonomy%252F%252Fv%253A0%26a0%3Diphrase%2Brelevance%252F%252Fv%253A0%26i%3Dsitemap%2Bid%26k0.0%3D400097%26qt%3D1245392651%26qid%3Dq0gind6cr8woS%26vid%3DvA8zsAiRvTLr0%26ioe%3DUTF-8%26s2%3Dsitemap%2Bid%252F%252F1%26qtid%3Dq0gind6cr8woS%26s1%3Diphrase%2Brelevance%252F%252F0%26rid%3DrSbGN4cfxbdSC%26s0%3Diphrase%2Brelevance%252F%252F0%26t%3D0%26m0%3Diphrase%2Bbundle%2Bid%26mcmode%3Dtest ANY OF THESE ARE SUITABLE FOR SPINNING classes you don't need Sidi shoes for that....a bit overkill!

What is a good starter road bike for a first triatholon?

best spinning bike shoes on indoor biking and spinning differ in that spinning uses a fly wheel ...
best spinning bike shoes image
Q. Im training for my first triatholon and am looking for a good road bike for the riding portion. I have been training on a stationary bike at the gym and am needing to get some miles done on a road bike. Ive looked at some local, Houston Tx, bike shops and the prices are well over what I want to spend on a bike. Any suggestions on brands and dealers would be great.

Answer
Ebay! Start with bikes 4 years and older, aluminum, at least 10 speeds. Riding in a Tri is a lot like riding a century. Bike fit and comfort are more important than saving weight. If your position and pedal stroke are comfortable to you, chances are they're more efficient as well.

Then, invest in a set of Tri Aero Bars.. around 60 bucks, and practice with them. More than you think you should! If you wait till the day of your triathlon, you'll dump, wipe, face plant, or hurt someone else the first time you get the wobbles. Make sure you're riding intervals and sprints, not just long distance, low effort spins on an exercise bike.

Anything by one of the larger cycle manufacturers will suit you fine as long as you're comfortable with the bike, it has a big gear you can spin for an hour at high speed, and you rack up the seat time in prep for race day. Good Luck!

And to the Chris S below me.. I agree seem like they are a purely optional expediture, but I have found that they come in very handy when resting your arms and shoulders before or after a long swim. My Veloton group actually restricts their use in TT due to 2 or 3 guys riding aero bars in a paceline last year. A direct result of poor planning on the part of the organizers, but needless to say, that particular group ended up with a broken clavicle, a broken collarbone, three green-stick arm fractures, and yards of road rash!

Also, Have to ditto the shoes and pedals. Most of all though, be comfortable. Dont buy new gear the day before your Tri. If you havent trained in or on it, chances are it will just hurt you.

Any tips on how to ride a bike properly?

Giselle

I know how to ride a bike [obviously]. But are there any ways to ride it well? Like should I pull in my abs or tighten my leg muscles? Anything like that?

Answer
When riding you should have your weight on the saddle. Use arms for balance (and on hills to brace), but basically you should be relaxed. Keep a more or less straight back. Now ... focus on "peddling in circles". This is only really possible with bike shoes / cleats or shoes and clipless peddles. The whole idea is to use all the muscles of the leg and ankle to push down, pull back, kick forward and pull up. You also want to spin at 70 - 90 rpm (lower puts strain on knees and much higher makes you breath harder than optimum.

Voila ... good riding form and fast travel.
