My dad has signed me up for a spinning class and I was just wondering what the benefits are of taking this class:)

Answer
A) You'll get bored to death.
B) You'll get bored to death.
C) You'll get bored to death.

Go get a REAL bicycle & ride outside. There's still a lot of good weather left this year.
http://www.raleighusa.com/bikes/fitness/alysa-ft1-13/

Cycling is a cardiovascular activity - indoors or outdoors. It improves or strengthens the heart & circulatory system. Helps to improve lung function. Tones leg & butt muscles.

How many "miles" do you go in a typical hour long spin class?

mack

I ride a bike 3 times a week for about 1.5-2 hours and do approx 25 miles on the road (avg 15 miles/hr). We wondered in spin class the other day how many miles we go (we do warm-ups, jumps, sprints, intervals, climbs (1st, 2nd, 3rd positions) for a 60 min class taught by a 25 year old playing pop/hip hop.
So I guessed 15 miles and got laughed at!

Answer
Actually, you should be the person to answer this. You cycling and you do your class. You are the expert!

Gage your spinning against your riding experience.

I want to get one of those spin bikes, but would it be the same thing if I got a mountain bike?

I could get one of those stands for the rear tire(i don't know the name). But if I do get the stand is it the same thing as a spin bike? That way I can ride it outside when I want. If it is the same with the stand, how much is the stand?

Answer
I, and most cyclist here will say a bike on a TRAINER is the best. Trainers are fairly cheap many $100 to $150. But the bike of your choice. I recommend buying a cheap smooth tire for the back wheel, it works much better that way and won't wear out your knobbie tire.

Here's on of many sites you can get them from, and it being end of winter they are on sale: http://www.nashbar.com/index.cfm

Fluid and mag trainers are preferred. You can buy a reasonalble bike and trainer for the same cost as a good spinning bike and get much more use out it like you said.

Which bike is better for weight loss?

Serendipit

I am interested in losing a little weight and toning up a bit, but I don't want a short term thing. I was ready to buy a recumbent bike to work out indoors because it is getting cooler and i won't have an excuse not to use it. Although I saw on biggest loser the trainer said to get a spin bike. I am not sure what that is but he said that it is the best workout u can get? Any suggestions for me? I am strictly asking about the bikes. I already know about diet.

Answer
The one you continue to use is the best one. Real cyclists all use a regular outdoor bike on a trainer (see links below). The least expensive trainers, like I use, are less than $100 (minus bike). The benefit is that once you take the bike off, they take up hardly any space, and when you're riding, it feels the same as your regular bike, because it IS your regular bike.

If money is no object, Computrainer is the gold standard. It interfaces with your computer, (and HRM or Powertap if you have them), allowing you to ride various virtual courses, or even race friends on the internet.

Spin bikes are a specialized contraption used in spin classes. Spin classes can be a fun diversion, but I wouldn't bother with one of those for home use.

I do not have any rooms in my house large enough to have a full gym and I don't have enough time to go to a professional gym, so I want two or three bits of equipment I was thinking a multi-gym compact, a spin bike and a punching ball and bag.
But what bits of equipment will I need to get the best workout at home possible?

Answer
1.dumbells are always good.. u can work your full body with them
2. a bowflex is great.. u can get solid workouts from them.
3. a piece of cardio equipment is always good.... so u can burn fat, bike, eliptical, or treadmill

look to something in this list...

I just boutgh the motobecane immortal force and Im wondering how it is, if you bought another motobecane online Im also currious how it its plus which one you got. I would really appreciate it

Answer
I didn't but two friends of mine bought Motos. A Fly Pro and a Le Champion. Both are extremely happy with their bikes. I got to take both for a spin and thought they were very good bikes and spec'ed better than any bike for the price.

The Le champion was one size too big for me but still felt good and had very similar characteristics to my Cannondale which I love. Stiff frame and tracked true. The AC 420 wheels are great. The 10 Ultergra shifted better than my 9 speed. It came with Kenda tires, they do the job but aren't my favorite tire. The Fly Pro has an awesome flat black paint job. Came with super light Kenda's with small knobs, not good for muddy or very loose conditions but fast. Both these bikes are crazy light as well. If I didn't have my bikes I'd buy both.

What would be a good bicycle for fast street riding or freeriding?

Max price at around $600 please. Height 5'11" ish, 170 lbs skinny if those make any significant difference. Thanks :D

Answer
I am not up on free riding, so I may not be right on the mark. I am not to sure based on your question that you would ride on the street more than free riding. "I bought this bike after a trip to my local bike shop. I told them I was looking for something good for all around but nothing race oriented that would be good to get back into biking and get me out for some exercise.

So far this bike has made me want to get out and bike more. I've done anywhere from 5 to 45 miles per outing and have been on pavement, dirt and gravel, cinder paths and all out mud and muck. I'm just starting out but can easily spin the bike 15-18mph up moderate hills and it felt solid on a 38+ mph descent down the back half of a rather steep hill climb.

The last ride that sold me was a 40 mile trip around a lake in the thousand islands that was 30 miles on-road and then 10 miles of absolutely, what was I thinking off-roading. This thing pulled me through some good 8-10" of standing water and was still decent enough at pulling me up over some decent sized rock inclines with wet and muddy tires (semi-slick) tires.

The stock seat was good for me until about 20 miles round trips and then I swapped out for something a bit more comfortable.

As my legs feel stronger and my distances increase I am wondering if I could also use a road bike but I wouldn't get rid of this one either way."

I have Specialized mountain bike shoes with SPD cleats, mostly for use in spinning. Every two or three times I wear them, I notice the cleats getting lose on one of the shoes. So I have to tighten them frequently. Does this indicate that the shoe or the cleat has a problem and may need to be replaced?

Thanks.

Answer
Listen, dude, you're talking nonsense.

Can you recommend men's spin shoes for someone who spins every day?

glbrown78

I spin a lot and find that my Sidi road bike shoes leave my feet feeling sore. Are there any specific models of shoe that you would recommend for heavy spinning?

Answer
That Sidi shoe is NOT necessarily for spinning classes it is for serious road racing....no wonder it hurts! Probably not fit right to your foot either. Look at any of these shoes here : http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/CatalogSearchResultView?storeId=10052&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&searchType=categoryId&searchTerm=400097&cn1=f03//0%20-%20100//p//0//15||&sortBy=iphrase%20relevance//0&beginIndex=0&pageSize=16&ipState=c0%3Di%253A1%253B3%253Biphrase%2Bbundle%2Btaxonomy%2Bid%2Bfrom%2Broot%253B400097%253B%253A400097%253B1%252C1%253B0%26q%3D16%26a1%3Diphrase%2Bbundle%2Btaxonomy%252F%252Fv%253A0%26a0%3Diphrase%2Brelevance%252F%252Fv%253A0%26i%3Dsitemap%2Bid%26k0.0%3D400097%26qt%3D1245392651%26qid%3Dq0gind6cr8woS%26vid%3DvA8zsAiRvTLr0%26ioe%3DUTF-8%26s2%3Dsitemap%2Bid%252F%252F1%26qtid%3Dq0gind6cr8woS%26s1%3Diphrase%2Brelevance%252F%252F0%26rid%3DrSbGN4cfxbdSC%26s0%3Diphrase%2Brelevance%252F%252F0%26t%3D0%26m0%3Diphrase%2Bbundle%2Bid%26mcmode%3Dtest ANY OF THESE ARE SUITABLE FOR SPINNING classes you don't need Sidi shoes for that....a bit overkill!

How do I sit properly on a spin bike?

best spinning bikes with monitor image

ninfragile

Apparently I've been too upright when I'm sitting on one. I'm trying to determine the correct seating posture for a spinning session to the most effective.

Answer
Adjust the saddle height to where you have a slight bend in the knee with the ball of your food over the center of the pedal. Your leg should be straight with your heel over the same spot. Move the saddle for and aft so the protruding bone just below your knee cap is over the center of the pedal when it is straight forward and parallel with the floor.

Adjust the handlebar position to allow you to place some weight on your arms.

You want to do an easy 10 min warm up and then start pedaling at a high cadence 70-90 rpms and apply just enough resistance to get your hart rate up and you should be sweating after 15 min. You don't want to use too much resistance where you kill your legs. It's too easy to do that but a heart ate monitor will keep you on the right track.

Answer
Perhaps you could do a Yahoo! search?

EDIT: If you bought the Walmart version then I recommend that you go back to your local store and obtain one. These were made for Walmart, and actually should be relatively easy to assemble with basic mechanical ability.

Thats not to say that they'll last very long...

How big of an effect does wheel diameter have on bicycle performance?

best spinning bike uk on Spin Bike Buying Guide
best spinning bike uk image

John P

Answer
Surprisingly not as much as a lot of people would have you believe. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

The big advantages are; A smaller wheel can be made much lighter and therefore will accelerate quicker. A smaller wheel will be much more resilient to sideways forces.

The disadvantages are that they need to be geared much higher and spin faster (higher frictional losses) for any given speed.

There are few really low rolling resistance tyres available for small wheels. The best that I 'm aware of is Greenspeed's Scorcher here is a review
http://www.bentrideronline.com/reviews/scorchers/scorchers.htm

My conclusion is that on a shorter or winding courses the smaller wheels will be much better. As the riding surface becomes rougher, or softer the advantage shifts towards larger wheels. For sustained higher speeds (ie road cycling) the larger wheels win, but not by a huge margin.

Here is an article that covers the subject well. (and a reliable institution.)
http://hea-www.harvard.edu/~fine/opinions/wheelsize.html

I'll throw in this review of a small wheeled road bike for good measure

i wanted to make an electric bike but i dont know how to make the chain spin... how does it work?

does electricity and battery make it spin or what how does this all work?

Answer
You are right. An electric motor and battery are what is needed.

But most electric motors are either direct drive in the rear hub OR there is a roller that drives the front wheel directly. With your level of expertise I'd recommend getting a kit. Australia do some good ones.

why humans shouldn't preserve biodiversity in the biosphere?

Samantha

I'm doing a debate a school and I need some reason why humans shouldn't preserve biodiversity in the biosphere. I doubt there are any reason though.

Answer
Well... some aspects of biodiversity are bad. Mosquitos, ticks, bedbugs, rats, and mice carry diseases that infect humans and farm animals and pets. Certain insects are doing serious damage to trees and crops. Zebra mussels are taking over native species in the Great Lakes and many estuaries in the U.S. Riding your bike at night would be a much different matter if mountain lions or hyenas or wolves hunted in your city.

In the case of wolves... they were reintroduced into areas in western U.S. and cattle ranchers are hurt by livestock losses. Cattle ranchers around Yellowstone Park are hurt by a disease that spreads to their cattle from bison who wander out of the Park. People in Australia worry about poisonous snakes and spiders in their yards that can kill people. Biologists in Florida want to get rid of pythons which were introduced by people abandoning pet snakes. The pythons are killing off native species.

If you do some research, you can probably find more examples you can "spin" as anti-biodiversity.

How can most cyclists make themselves look pedalling slow yet fast?

best spin bike for cyclists on Spinner Sport Spin Bike | Indoor Cycling Bike Reviews
best spin bike for cyclists image

Elation

Its been a long time since I rode my bike again. Today, I was mad at myself because that an old lady riding her bike passed me without an effort. She just rang her tiny bell at me with a smile and made it look easy because she does not catch her breath despite her speed and sunny weather. While I was opposite.

How can this be, is it only practice or there is a way to get faster by adjusting my gears?

Answer
You need to ride more to get stronger. You want to learn to pedal at a high cadence 70-90 rpm's with a lite touch on the pedals. That will use your slow twitch muscles that burn fat as a fuel and your legs wont get tired.

Select a gear that will get your breathing to the point where you can still talk but not sing. If you need to catch your breath or your legs start to hurt drop down a gear or two and keep going.

You can switch it up and pedal slower in a higher gear for a while but it will kill your legs quickly. Switch back to a higher cadence with a gear that is easy to spin to recover. Climbing hills will help also.

High cadence with a lite pedal you can go for a very long time.

Low cadence and mashing will use up you legs quickly and will use your hamstring and gluts more. Good for sprinting to the finish line and climbing hills.

How do you call a bike gear that is heavy and light?

Bernardo

I feel like i have this kinda mixed up because . I am a cyclist and i train with my dad daily . I hear him give me advice to move my gears high when we go hills , for us High gears means : light and LOW gears mean : heavy . I feel like i got these mixed up because iv been seeing videos of other cyclist giving advice on hill climbing . and they say to have your gears low .witch makes me think, wait why make it heavier ? I guess im gust mixed up on how to say it but what is the proper way to say it ?

Answer
Lower (easier) gears to climb hills. Higher gears as pedaling becomes easier. "Spinning" and "cadence" are the two key words. Have your saddle at the right height for optimal leg extension & power. "Spin" at a rate or "cadence" between at least 70-90 rpm in gears easy to use with moderate pedal pressure.

Answer
That system is a pretty decent performer...BUT....You WILL need to remap the injection with an exhaust change of that degree...a hi-flo air cleaner should also be added if it hasn't aleady been done.
HD's "Stage 1 Download" will NOT be sufficient for this system...you will need the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner and have it DYNO TUNED....

you can email me here through my profile if you ahve any questions...I also have some other recommendations I could make, but not enough room here...

An answer to a similar question..
They guys you were talking to are kind of right. With the pipes you are looking at, the bike really does need to have a hi-flo air cleaner put on. The dramatic decrease in restriction and the short length are the reason. Shorter pipes generally cause a drop in power in the low and mid-range, but can be compensated for somewhat by adding a set of Samson Torque Cones. The air cleaner will be needed to let more air in also to help compensate for the increase in exhaust flow. The Screamin Eagle air cleaner is ok, but the Arlen Ness Big Sucker (get the Stage 2 version) is better and about the same price. The S/E uses a shallow, dry filter material similar to a fiber glass mat, the Big Sucker uses a deeper K&N filter that flows considerably more air than the S/E. The stock HD air cleaner is THE most power restricting part on the bike. If you pull off the cover and look at the element, you will see why...it literally starves the engine for air, the reason for this from the factory...EPA NOISE pollution restrictions.
Now this is the MAJOR factor in the situation....DO NOT let anyone talk you into a Power Commander or Vance & Hines Fuel Pak, or ANY type of "piggy back"....FUEL...module!!!
You want the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner!!!
There are several reasons for this.
1. There is almost no room on a Softail to mount an add-on module, it basically get jammed and stuffed under the seat. "piggy back" modules plug in-line between the bikes computer and the wire harness, they are big and bulky and create extra wiring that is a ***** to mount, route and work around.
2. They do not do anything except control fuel, they have no timing or rev limit adjustments. The Power Commander 5 for 09-up bikes does have an Auto-Tune module that will allow the system to adjust the fuel by itself while you ride...BUT it is an additional couple hundred dollars, and you have to add yet another module to allow for timing adjustments...now you have 2 additional modules to try and figure how and where to mount. All together you will end up having arouns $1000 in modules.

The Screamin Eagle Super Tuner is basically nothing but software that reprograms the stock computer. It is a box that goes between 2 cables that link the bike to a PC. Once the computer is programmed and mapped on the dyno, you unplug it....nothing to mount. DO NOT LOSE THE BOX!!!!....if you do and need further tuning in the future for mods done later, you will have to buy another Tuner. The Tuner, once plugged in to a bike is "married" to that bike only and will not work on any other bikes. The Super Tuner has virtually unlimited tuning capabilites. It will allow for fuel mapping, accelerator pump feature for better throttle response, fully adjustable rev limit (do not rev a Softail past 6200, past that, the balancers spin too fast and can fly apart and destroy the engine), fully adjustable timing advance and curve tables, etc. I was amazed at what this thing can do when I was trained on it.
Having the timing properly set makes all the difference in the world. We tested bikes with stock timing and rev limits that had the fuel dialed in perfect for max power, then loaded in performance timing maps and had gains of 5-15 hp & tq.
And there is one more benefit to the Super Tuner compared to the others....The Tuner is about $400, the same as the others, bt no added expenses from add-on modules...its all built in.

Doing all of this, and having the bike tuned, WILL make it run cooler!!! The Twin Cams run hotter than the older Evo's like Mike has. The reasons are being tuned VERY lean for EPA standards and the Twin Cams use oil jets under the pistons. These jets squirt oil onto the bottom of the piston to help cool it. Stock engines run sooooo lean that they cause excessive heat.....here is the oxymoron....because they are so lean, HD designed the oil jets to cool the pistons....what actually happens is the pistons HEAT the oil!!!....tune the engine, richen it up, and the piston cools down, now, the oil can do its job and cool the piston....double cooling effect. Proper tuning will decreae oil temp by as much as 20-25 degress and promote longer, more reliable engine life...and you will FEEL the power increase.....generally, depending on the bike, combination of pipes and air cleaner, and how good the guy tuning the bike is, you can expect 10-15 hp & tq increase.

Do you have to put a download in a 07 softail if you put a after market exhaust on?

p aud

Answer
You don't HAVE to....BUT...it WILL run better. The 96's run extremely lean, which make them run hot, remapping the injection will cool the engine and oil temp and make it run better.
Also, adding an air cleaner, exhaust, and having it TUNED with the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner will give you a an additional 12-15 hp.

The stock ECM is NOT relearn capable, it will only self compensate under the extremely NARROW parameters by which it was programmed...it does this by the use of O2 sensors....NEVER EVER eliminate the O2 sensors!!!!!

V&H Fuel Pack, Ness Fuel Controller....are junk!!!..........Read below........it is answer to another similar question regarding injection tuning, also included is info on oil to help run COOLER...cooler + better performance.......Due to the EXTREMELY LIMITED mounting space for add-on "piggy-back" fuel controllers on a Softail.....I HIGHLY AND STRONGLY recommend the Sreamin Eagle Super Tuner.....it is only software that reprograms the ECM with nothing needing to be mounted to the bike. The Super Tuner will allow for infinite adjustments to the air/fuel ratio, ignition timing, rev-limiter, acellerator pump feature, engine decel enleanment to eliminate exhaust popping, etc.

And to make it run BETTER & COOLER.......here is some info on proper tuning........an answer to a previous question......

DO YOU HAVE A HI-FLO AIR CLEANER AND PIPES ON THE BIKE???.....IF SO, DID YOU HAVE THE ECM REMAPPED BY HD OR HAVE A SUPER TUNER OR POWER COMMANDER ON IT????...........THIS IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!
HD'S ARE SET UP TO RUN VERY VERY LEAN DUE TO EPA REGULATIONS!!!!!!! RUNNING LEAN CAUSES THE ENGINE TO RUN HOT!!!!!!........THERE ARE OIL JETS THAT SQUIRT OIL ON THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE PISTON TO COOL THE PISTON.....THIS HEATS UP THE OIL..........RICHEN IT UP, THE PISTON WILL RUN COOLER....THE OIL WILL RUN COOLER.
Even if the bike is COMPLETELY STOCK.......have HD do a Stage 1 download to the ECM......if you have a Power Commander or Super Tuner on the bike..........get it dyno TUNED.....it will increase your performance and make the engine run OPTIMALLY..................her... is some info about "downloads compared to the Super Tuner.......
You want the Screamin Eagle SUPER TUNER!!!!.......and have it Dyno TUNED.....don't sttle for just having the base map loaded. The difference between being tuned and a base map is like night and day. The base maps are just that...a base to which to work form. Every engine is as individaul as we are as humans, they each require a little finesse and tuning to make them perform optimally. The Super Tuner will also allow for easier tuning for any future upgrade you may make.
A Stage 1 download is nothing more than a GENERIC map from HD that is "ok" for all bikes....this is CRAP!!!......the Stage 1 download was specifically made for a HD with Screamin Eagle Mufflers and Air Cleaner......not all mufflers (or complete exhaust systems) flow exactly the same and not all Air Cleaners flow exactly the same...meaning, if you change ANYTHING on the exhaust and intake that the Stage 1 was not designed for, it wil not work as well.....like I said every engine is DIFFERENT.
As far as power output goes....it will vary as to what components are used and how well it is tuned....but on an average from completely STOCK to an upgrade of exhaust/air cleaner, super tuner, about 12-15 horsepower........At how many miles did you start running synthetic? You should never run synthetic until at least 2500.
Which Power Commander was installed....the O2 eliminator ( DO NOT USE THIS!!!...THE O2 SENSORS ARE THERE FOR A REASON....O2 eliminators should ONLY be used for RACING applications!!!!) or the new PC 5 w/ wide band O2 sensors? (The WIDE BAND IS THE BEST fuel controller on the market for Big Twins....BUT requires a fair amount of room to install it along with extra room needed for the add-on ign control module), did you have the separate ADJUSTABLE IGNTION MODULE AND/OR AUTO TUNE MODULE (09-newer) installed also....this will HELP ALOT!!!!....the HD Super Tuner is good, but it runs narrow band O2 sensors (i like these for Sportsters because there is no module to install and conceal).....BUT it does have ignition adjustments the PC doesn't have by itself (have to add it extra with the PC5).
Either way, it sounds like you need to have the bike properly tuned....if they just simply loaded a map....that is NO GOOD...a map is just a starting point for proper tuning.
You air cleaner...did you mean BIG SUCKER???...if so good choice.....the Screamin EEagle air cleaner is way better than stock HD.....but does not hold a candle to the DEEPER K&N filter Ness uses......GOOD CHOICE.

I'm really skinny and tall and my butt is small and flat. How do I make it rounder and maybe bigger? Also, does wearing thongs make it rounder? I heard it does but Idk.

Answer
How to Get a Rounder Butt

By Glenda Taylor, eHow Contributor

Get the rear end of your dreams.

If you long for an hourglass shape, small waist that tapers into a nicely rounded butt, you are in good company. One of the most common complaints a woman has about her body centers on her rear end. If youâre underweight or if your bottom line has dropped a little with age, a few techniques can help you regain a girlish figure.

How to Have a Rounder Butt Using Resistance Bands
http://www.ehow.com/how_5158440_rounder-butt-using-resistance-bands.html

Instructions

1
Get moving. Your gluteus muscles, the largest, bulkiest muscles on the back of your hips that form your butt; connect to your hamstrings, which consist of three large muscles that run down the back of your leg. When you move, these muscles work together to move and lift your body weight. As your gluteus muscles become stronger, they will sit higher on your backside. Try taking larger steps when walking or going up steps two at a time.

2
Do squats and lunges. Among the best exercises for toning up butt muscles, squats work the upper portion of the gluteus muscle. Perform squats with your back straight and your body lowered no further than a horizontal position from your hips to your knees. Try holding onto a chair or counter top with one hand for support. Tighten your abdominal and gluteus muscles and avoid leaning forward to protect your knees. Watch a video on the correct way to perform squats. (See Resources.)

3
Lunge forward on alternate legs, placing one foot in front and balancing your body as you lower yourself. Stop before your front knee reaches a 45-degree angle to protect your knee joint. Make sure to keep your bent knee directly over your ankle and tighten your abdominal muscles to prevent over arching of your back. Watch a video on the correct way to perform a lunge. (See Resources.)

4
Rent a different âbunsâ DVD each week to keep your fitness routine from going stale. Itâs hard to do the same video day after day, so donât. Video stores stock many fitness DVDs and not only will you enjoy the change of pace, youâll find new ways to firm and shape your hips.

5
Take martial arts classes. Thereâs a good reason female martial arts experts have shapely derrieres; they spend hours kicking in all different directions. Not only will you strengthen the muscles that make your backside round and shapely, youâll stretch and learn to keep your muscles limber. As a plus, you may come away with some self-defense techniques.

6
Stretch properly before performing exercises that involve lunges, squats or kicks to prevent a pulled muscle. When stretching your muscles, use gentle tension instead of bouncing and take your time. When your muscles are limber, you can perform exercises with less chance of injury. Use proper stretching techniques to avoid a pulled muscle. (See Resources.)

7
Jump on your bicycle and take a spin. A change of scenery lets you forget that your hamstring and gluteus muscles are getting a workout. On inclement days, use a stationary bike and distract yourself by watching television, listening to music or reading a magazine.

8
Eat more protein and reduce your intake of starchy carbohydrates, sweets and saturated fats. Muscles are made of protein and they become stronger as they receive more fuel. Saturated fats, found in some meat products, eggs and whole dairy foods, increase your risk of clogged arteries, coronary heart disease and stroke. Become a label-reader when shopping for healthy food.

Tips & Warnings

Consult your physician before going on any protein modification diet.

Consult a certified trainer when you start a butt-rounding exercise routine in order to ensure that you perform the exercises safely.

does anyone know how can i lose 10 to 15 pounds in a month?

shorty

okay am 22 years old 5'1'' and weight 153 am like 20 pounds over weight i've been trying to lose weight for the past 2 months i've also been drinking green tea but it doesn't work.

Answer
You need to watch your carbs. Look at the nutrition lables on the foods you eat. You need to eat small meals with snacks. Lots of fruits and vegies and lean meats. Stay away from fast food and processed food. East wheat bread instead of white and eat brown rice instead of white rice. Avoid foods high in starch as these turn to sugar (i.e. potatoes, corn).

Also, you need to workout at least 30 minutes a day. I ride my spin bike for 30 minutes each day. You will also firm up doing this. It burns more calories than walking. Just turn on the tv and ride. Keep in mind that muscle weighs about 3 times more than fat - so if you build muscle you may not lose weight on the scale, but you will lose inches.

Another great exercise which is acually noted as being the second best exercise for you is called Rebounding (exercising on a mini trampoline). Swimming is the best exercise. Walmart has a mini tramp for about $30.00 with a DVD. I bought one.

Good luck!

How is a regular exercise bike different than a spinning bike?

best spinning bike on ... reproducable this isnt my bike on a trainer it is a spin bike
best spinning bike image

Kimmy

The buzz lately is that you can burn about 500 calories, tone up and lose weight quickly by exercising for only 30 minutes on a spinning bike.

I have a regular exercise bike and cannot afford a spinning bike or classes. Would I be able to achieve the same results by exercising for 30 minutes a day on my exercise bike?

Please explain to me the difference between the two bikes and how they work differently to give different results?

Answer
The primary difference is the adjustability and the quality that goes into the drive mechanism. Spinning bikes, as the name implies, spin a weighted flywheel using the power of your legs. The tension you set, in conjunction with the weight of the flywheel, determine the resistance you feel. This provides a much more realistic effect in terms of how it uses your muscles. A old school excercise bike isnt as good at effectively targeting the muscle used and doesnt provide as much of a realistic cycling feel.

That said, if your goal is just to get a workout in you arent going to miss much. A competitive cyclist would notice the difference but a casual rider just looking to burn some calories probably will notice only the terribly uncomfortable saddle of an old excercise bike.

Think of it as the diffference between running wind sprints vs. running parachute assisted acceleration sprints.... Unless you're a pro athlete working on dropping your 40yd times, wind sprints is just fine. Similar situation here. If you're gonna be heading to the races, start spining.. If you just want a workout save the money.

PS- If you get serious about riding and you really want the best set-up, IMO its using your road bike on resistance trainer like the cycleops fluid2 or something similar. It lets you keep your cockpit setup (duh, its your bike) but gives you the indoor training option for those shoddy days when you dont want to go outside and ride.

What is the best indoor group spin bike for the price? And also if money were no object?

shanana

Hoping to hear from group fitness directors, spin class teachers, and any salepeople who can give an unbiased opinion. Looking to buy 20-30 new spin bikes within the next 2 months.

Answer
I'm a customer not an instructor, but I've been to a lot of clubs and rode a lot of spin bikes. The best one I've been on was a Lemond Revmaster. There have been other good ones, but the little design details of the Lemond made it really good for a hard-core roadie like me.

If money were no object, I'd get the CycleOps - link below

A bike tire spins at a rate of 4 revolutions per second. If the diameter of the tire is 60cm?

A bike tire spins at a rate of 4 revolutions per second. If the diameter of the tire is 60cm what is the average rate of change in height of a point on the tire for the first 1/100 second if h(0) = 30 for that point?

Answer
The general equation for height at time t is h(t) = r*sin(2*pi*f*t) + h_0. We use sin because height is the y-value of the point, r is the radius, h_0 is the initial height, and f is the frequency in revolutions per second.

So in your case, we have
r = 60cm
f = 4 rev/s
h_0 = 30cm

Our equation becomes

h(t) = 60*sin(8*pi*t) + 30

Now, compute h(1/100) = 60*sin(8*pi*1/100) + 30 = 60*sin(2*pi/25) + 30 = 44.92cm

So, the average rate of change is the change in height divided by the change in time. In other words, final minus initial height, divided by final minus initial time.

h(1/100) - h(0)
-------------------
1/100 - 0

=

(44.92 - 30) cm
---------------
1/100 s

= 1492 cm/s

Are there cyclometers for stationary bikes?

Ian F

With fall and winter coming on, I am finding myself indoors a lot more. My school has some very nice spinning bikes at the gym set off by themselves. However, they don't give any output (cadence, watts, mph, etc). I want to put in a good winter of training but I would like some readings to track my progress. I could get a stand alone heart monitor and try that but do they make cyclometers for stationaries?

Answer
get a heart rate monitor

that;s the bottom line anyway

how many hours did you do, and in what aerobic zones?

miles don;t mean anything
watts either really

a lot of stationary bikes have HRMs, it;s easy to sense heart beat through the hands, but they may not have a lot of statistical reporting

the most basic HRM just says what your heart rate is, right now, no history, no % of max, no nothing, just beats per minute

Is the simplest way you can define it, what is radius of gyration and how do you find it?

best spin bike value on SBR Grey 2100 Spin Bike, Spin Bikes for Sale, Best Spin Bike - Renouf ...
best spin bike value image
Q. What is it?
What is it used for?
What does it explain?
And how do you find it mathematically?

Answer
The moment of inertia of a body is â m(i) . r(i)^2

Which means that you take all the individual masses that make up the body , multiply each one by the square of the distance it is from the axis of rotation and add them all together.

For each body there can be any number of axes of rotation and so there can be any number of different Moments of Inertia for the same body.

We concentrate on simple shapes with axes of rotation in obvious places.

For example - a bike wheel with all the mass in the rim ( zero weight spokes ! ) , and every bit of that mass the same distance R from the centre of the circle . So the MI of the wheel is M . R^2

Next step = A solid disk ( like a CD ) , spinning round its centre. This time some of the mass is closer to the
centre, and contributes less to the MI .
The total MI for a solid disc can be worked out ( it needs calculus ) and it comes to 1/2 M R^2

Another way to write this would be Mr^2 where r is the radius of gyration - the single value for the average distance from the rotation axis that will give you the correct moment of inertia

In this case r = R/â2

All moments of inertia can be represented by the formula MI = M . r^2 where the r ( the radius of gyration ) is the representative distance that gives you the correct answer.

That is all it is.

A solid ball spinning about a central axis, has a moment of inertia of 2/5 . M . R^2

so its radius of gyration will be 0.4 . M . R^2 = M . r^2

r = R . â 0.4 = 0.6325 R

You don't usually work out the radius of gyration.... you measure it practically by seeing what torque is needed to spin an object, work out the moment of inertia ( by experiment ) and then calculate what the gyration radius must be.

Unless you are doing engineering, I would just ignore it.

Physics 11 Questions Redgarding Force of Friction PLease Help?

Wesley

A Guy and his bike have total mass of 67.0 kg. The cyclist is travelling at constant speed along horizontal highway. As he peddles, the forward force exerted on him is 154 N

What does it mean when they say forward force exerted on him? is that going forwards or backwards?

And how can I find out friction force and the coefficent?

Answer
You are asking a very difficult (maybe impossible) question. Here is some background information, which may (or may not!) help.

Assuming the cyclist is also going in a straight line, there will be 3 horizontal forces on him:

a) 2 forces in the opposite direction to his velocity; these are air resistance and also what is called 'rolling resistance' - their total will equal 154N. (If you are not familiar with rolling resistance, just imagine the wheel-bearings need greasing and/or the tyres are flat - these factors would increase rolling resistance a lot!)

b) a force (call it 'thrust') in the direction of motion; this will also be 154N; this is the forwards frictional force of the ground on the driving-wheel. (This is a difficult concept; the thrust is the 'grip' between the wheel and road and is stopping the rotating wheel from sliding against the road as it rotates - as a consequence it thrusts the wheel forwards.)

a) and b) have opposite directions; as the cyclist travels at constant velocity we know the resultant of a) and b) is zero, hence they must both have a magnitude of 154N

Which of these forces is called the 'forwards force' not 100% clear, but I would opt for b), the thrust.

The confusion here is that there are 3 frictional forces; air resistance and rolling resistance are frictional and act backwards. But the thrust is also a frictional force and acts forwards.

There are different types of coefficient of friction:

- the coefficient of static friction applies to surfaces just about to start slipping (the case of limiting friction) and is not applicable here unless wheel-spin is about to start;

- coefficient of kinetic friction applies to surfaces which are already sliding against each other; again this is not applicable here;

- coefficient of rolling friction could be applied but should not include air resistance, , so there is no way to work it out here.

If you actually need a value for the coefficient of friction (which you should NOT have been asked for as it makes no sense in this situation) you would have to invent an 'effective coefficient of frictionâ which included the effects of air resistance; this would be calculated as follows:

(total fictional force opposing motion) / (normal force)
= 154 /(67.0 x 9.81)
= 0.234

Hope that helps a bit.

I am an average novice bike rider. I want to know what I need to do to start training and eventually compete in mountain bike races. What kind of training and diet regiment should I follow? What kind of bike and helmet should I get? How do I even get into a race? I am looking for anyone who has experience in the sport who might be able to help an upstart wannabe racer make his dreams come true.

Answer
First off, I am sure you have a bike. But I am sure it's not 1. Fitted to you 2. Tuned 3. Has proper Components. If you want to race this summer the good news is you don't even need a bike right now. You need to be in the Gym 3-4 days a week taking Spinning classes, weight lifting on both legs and upper body and following a nutrition plan to skinny you up (yes Skinny riders are normally the fastest).

Bike, Ok so your now on your way to getting fit. That's good. But to race you need the right bike. Go to your best Local bike shop (check MTBR.com for review). And tell them your story, they will either outfit you with a better set up or take what you have and get it ready for racing..

Riding: MTB is not just about fitness or gear. But a lot about heart and finesse. I would find out from the shop were the last year races were, maybe there was a series that toured around your state. Then as soon as the weather is nice get out there and ride as much as you can, forget the Gym and just ride. It's a lot different then being on a stationary bike.

Once your comfy on the bike and all the trails (this is not as easy as you think). Make some friends that ride, again your shop is a good resource. and look into a good beginner race. This will get your feet wet with how it's done.

After you have raced a little the rest falls into place.. Good luck.

What happens to tire slime after its expiration date?

Colin

Hi,

Some while ago I bought some slime/tire sealant for my mountain bike. The tube it came in says it lasts from two to six months.

I was wondering: could I put some new slime into an inner tube with expired slime? What happens to the slime when it expires? Does it become like a paste or evaporate?

Thanks.

Answer
I have had Slime tubes in my MTB for over 2 years. Same tube, same slime. Every week or so they lose around 10 psi if left unchecked (maybe it's time for some new slime tubes) , but this is no problem if you regularly check and change your tyre pressure for riding different conditions/surfaces. Around 2 or 3 times in this time I have got a flat tyre. All I did was spin the wheel to re distribute the slime and then pump up it back up and it is fine.

Sure it was a bit messy when it was time to get a new rear tyre (it gets slimy between the tyre and tube!) but it was clear that after inspecting the tube, it had in fact sealed quite a few small punctures (got bored and gave up counting after around 10). Once in the new tyre I gave it a nice spin and spread the slime out and it is fine.

So no need to fix a puncture during the whole life of an MTB tyre used all different conditions/surfaces.

All the nay sayers who say Slime does not work, you must have only had experience with cheap products and not proper Slime ( http://www.slime.com/ ) or not used them at all and just going by a few bad reviews. And yes, the valve would clog up if you let the air of of your tube tooo fast!

So yeah, to answer your question, don't worry mine are keeping my tyres full of air and stopping puncture after 2 years, maybe I will get some new tubes and slime when I wear out these tyres...

Where can i get an affordable road bike for beginners?

Any known places to ride in Shreveport or Bossier LA?

Any know clubs in Shreveport or Bossier for beginners?

Any other info is welcomed and needed. Thanx a ton

Answer
Ernest

Get a good used bike off of Craig's list, Ebay, classifieds , or garaga sales. Try rto saty with Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, or Giant.... BUT KNOW THE SIZE FRAME YOU NEED!

More importantly. to exercise with out the stress on knees and koints you need how to prosperly pedal. To do that you need to learn how to 'spin' the pedals. If you do not know use this forum to get the info. Do Not 'mash' the pedals, ie pedaling at too slow of a speed with too mush pressure. 'Spinning' is the proper way top ride a bike. Mashing will cause you almost as much stress and strain as running!

How can I make my Marin Fairfax 2007 bike better for long distance?

c_smith85

I recently purchased a Marin Fairfax 2007 hybrid bike for commuting around London, and I have so far been very impressed with it for commuting. Although I took into the country and found it to be exteremely slow for long distances. The sales man said this is due to the small wheels designed for acceleration. Is it possible to change the wheels to make it quicker on long distances? Are there any other words of advice to speed the bike up?
Sorry - the bike I have is an Marin Novato 2007 model with the following wheel specs:
Rear Hub: Shimano, 32 Hole Disc
Front Hub: Shimano, 32 Hole Disc
Spokes: DT 14 Gauge Black Stainless
Rims: WTB SX24, Double Wall, 32 Hole Disc
Tyres: Continental Sport Contact 26â x 1.6â with Safety System

Answer
There are 3 approaches to having a faster bike:
1. Shave bike weight by using components of more lightweight materials like titanium or carbon fiber. This is an expensive alternative.
You can also lighten your wheels by using road tires. These are lighter. Matching the tires to your rims may need professional (local bike shop) intervention. A road tire that does not match its rim can slip off.
2. Alter the sizes of your chainrings and cogset. You can use a road bike's crankset. These are larger and thus will transmit faster linear speed, but will require more pedalling effort to accelerate. Also, these usually come with only 2 chainrings. You'd have to adjust your front derailleur accordingly. The shifter will then have one dead speed. Or you can replace your front derailleur and shifter set with an appropriate road version instead.
You can change your cogset to one with the smallest cog having 11 teeth. This will also make your rear wheel spin faster.
3. Become a stronger rider. Lose weight; strengthen your lower body.

Definitely you can't change the size of your wheel to a larger one without changing your frame and fork and chain and cables and...

The next larger wheel size is 29", the same size as that of a road bike. Maybe you need a road bike instead. But if you prefer the more upright riding position and the better standover clearance of a MTB (or an ATB as what it's usually called in your country), then it may make sense to purchase a complete 29-er rig.

I looked up your bike. The componentry is already very good if you only use it for commuting. If you are in a situation that limits you to owning only your current Marin, changing to skinny road tires is the best alternative. Or you can look at it this way: not going so fast on a country road affords you more opportunity to take in the sights.

Ride safely. (",)
